From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 811 Date: Tuesday, December 24, 2002 7:31 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 812 Tuesday December 24, 2002 A Pocket Guide to Burma by Howard A. Daniel III I recently acquired this booklet on eBay and it was prepared by the Special Service Division, Services of Supply, United States Army in Washington, DC. It was printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office in 1943 with O-504717 identification. I believe it was prepared for our 1st Air Commandos and Merrill's Marauders, who were sent to India to fight with Wingate's Chindits behind the Japanese lines in Burma, and were eventually stationed inside Burma. The only section of the booklet of real interest to me, and probably you, is on page 40 with the title of "Currency". The text is as follows; "The currency used in Burma is the same as that in India: 1 rupee = 16 annas, and 1 anna = 12 pie or 4 pice. The rupee is a silver coin worth about 30 cents in American money. The anna, pie and pice are all bronze coins having approximate values of 2 cents, 1/6 cent and 1/2 cent in American money. The Japanese have probably introduced some of their own money, but the paper put out by the Axis occupation forces is likely to be worthless." It is apparent that the booklet writers are way behind the curve about the fact that Japanese Government (JIM) was circulating in Burma, and that the British colonial currency was only used under the table by less and less people as the occupation continued. I will bring the booklet to FUN in Orlando for anyone who wants to see it and will be there on January 10 & 11. If you cannot find me, find Larry and Fred, and they can tell you where I am on the bourse. Off the bourse, I have a room in the Comfort Inn at 7600 International Drive. The American Alamo of World War II Corregidor by Eric Morris, original copyright is 1981. Special numismatic review by Ray Czahor r I read the First Cooper Square Press Edition 2000.528 pages, soft cover with a number of maps, photos and illustrations. Mr. Morris interviewed 40 survivors, mostly low ranking officers and enlisted plus two civilians to obtain their detailed experiences. He chronicled them by date, time, place and organization beginning April 10., 1941 through the defense and collapse of Bataan and Corregidor, the final surrender, the Death March, and experiences in the POW camps. I found very interesting how the common GI viewed Gen. MacArthur (not very well liked or respected) in contrast to Gen. Wainright (respected as the GI's General). This book is by far the most moving and detailed account of the War in the Philippines, heroics by many but also the physical toll taken of our soldiers as well as the Filipinos. Mr. Morris spares no detail in the harsh and inhuman treatment of our military people who survived the Fall in May 1942. The Japanese did not believe in or approve of the Geneva convention and the death toll in the POW camps was 27% compared for 4% in German or Italian held POWs. I found several references to "money" in the book. The first was experienced by Private Frederick Howard, a Telegrapher at Fort Mills, Corregidor on April 24, 1942 just 14 days before the surrender: "A gift of huge amounts of new dollars and Philippine pesos would seen like a welcome present. Some came the way of Frederick Howard that evening in the strangest of circumstances. He was standing in the food line and feeling, like so many others by now, depressed and weary beyond all measure. He knew that after midnight, once the bombardment eased, he would have to venture forth to repair the telephone ground lines that had been broken. It was a futile gesture, since the same lines would soon be knocked out when the guns opened up the next morning. He reached the head of the line and collected his rice stew and pineapple chunks before retreating to a niche in the rocks outside the main tunnel. A man came by whom he had never seen before, a supply sergeant with his mess can and a sack. It was obvious that the sergeant, bubbling over with excitement, was dying to tell his story to someone. He unburdened himself to Howard. "He had been cutting up money all day, millions of dollars he claimed, and pesos by the bucketful. The sergeant opened his sack to show that it was full of brand-new crisp dollar bills in various denominations. He plucked out a handful, gave it to Howard and moved on his way, in search of a fresh audience. Howard counted his hoard; he had $6,000, more money than he had ever seen in his life. He quickly finished his frugal supper and hurried back to the solitude of his bunk deep inside the signal corps lateral (of the Malinta tunnel). There with a needle and thread he set about sewing most of his money into the waistbands of he two reaming pairs of trousers. He had a premonition that this might come in handy sometime in the future." The other except of interest concerned the Bilabid prison in Manila, where many POWs stayed: "In Bilabid the food situation at first was not so bad. Inmates could buy a few articles in the prison commissary, a banana, sugar, a little coconut, and occasionally eggs. In time both the food and the money became scarce, and this was really because under Japanese rule the Philippine economy was wrecked. Filipino farmers grew enough to eat, but any extra was commandeered by the Japanese. The sugar industry, a staple product of the islands and the main source of revenue was brought to a halt, and Japanese substituted cotton. The experiment was a dismal failure. The Filipinos refused to use the Japanese occupation currency, and so the economy simply fell apart. The Japanese were forced to bring in their own food by sea, and as the American submarine blockade became more effective, even the occupiers had to go without. However, the result that the American POW, the lowest man on the totem pole was soon starving. There were distributions of Red Cross packages, but the vast majority of the men saw only two issues during their time in the Philippines and by then the packages were old and had been pilfered." One other interesting note. POWs that survived were given a dollar a day for every day they had been prisoners. The money came from Japanese reparations but was poor compensation for the POWs' sufferings =========================================== Editorial =========================================== We (Judy and I) just finished a 1200 mile drive to get to Dallas to spend a few days with her sister. It was a long drive (obviously), but we avoided most of the bad weather (and killing each other) so here we are. Doug Bell is trying to organizing a mini Fest for Saturday here in the north Dallas area. I have been out of touch for a few days, so even I do not know the details. I hope to have some details soon, but if it is possible that you can attend, start thinking about Saturday afternoon.
