Reports passed 10,000 notes AND two million dollars! David Seelye put the total over $2 million with a twist. Harold Kroll who put the data base over one million was entering notes and looked like he would also put us over $2,000,000 but he took a break and David Seelye by chance put in the note that put us over. I Ate too Much in 2002 by Joe Boling Well, Monday got by me, then I promised Fred a column Tuesday night, and that slipped away, too. Maybe Ski is on the road and I can fill his spot in the Thursday gram. Update on my position 8 search--during the year 2002 I added twenty pieces to the collection. I have obtained the two keys, one of which I never owned back when I was a routine MPC collector (early 70s). I can't now remember which of the two keys I did not have, only that one was still missing when I had to sell my collection to Fred in order to pay a $1000 auction bill in November 1974. Here it is almost thirty years later and I am closing in on a complete collection again (well, not exactly closing in yet--I still lack 32 pieces of the basic 90-note set, but with the keys in hand, I don't expect it to be an insurmountable task. I bought the 541 $5 in the most recent IBNS auction. It was overgraded, and priced high, but as a friend asked about a similarly situated piece that he had located for me (the 591 $5), "do you want this #8 or not?" It is not unlike the situation with my other collection, the worldwide counterfeits. Some of the original notes are so rare that one must simply grit the teeth and fork over in order to obtain them whenever they appear; a second appearance may not occur--ever. The 471 $5 came to me from a gramster who read of my interest, and agreed to pass his to me if I could replace it with a suitable piece of another position number. I have acquired several pieces that way; I thank all who are helping me to fill my 8s that way. xxxxx This is just like bingo, as I try to fill the grid with denominations across the top and series down the side. With 58 pieces in hand, I still have not filled either a series or a denomination. Five series are each lacking one piece--461, 472, 481, 521, and 641. Three of those are series that I used myself. One series is still empty--I have no 651 notes. But even more surprising, one of the seven-note series only has two pieces in it--541, which is another series that I used personally. The most complete denomination is, unexpectedly, the $5--I lack two pieces to have them all. The toughest is proving to be not so unexpected--50 cents. I still need seven of them. Total expended so far is $5298.08 (ugh!). Curses on that jolly elf who started me on this quest by giving me a few position 8 pieces free.
