From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 814 Date: Thursday, December 26, 2002 10:07 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 814 Thursday December 26, 2002 Burmese General Ne Win Passed Away by Howard A. Daniel III Here I go again with information from the Obituaries section of The Washington Post! As many of you know who collect World War II financial instruments, General Ne Win (Bright Son) was one of the thirty Burmese nationalists sent to Japan in 1940 for military training. When he returned to Burma, he became a high-ranking officer in the Burma (-Japanese) National Army. So he was there during the entire time JIM and other financial instruments were issued during the war. When the Japanese were in full retreat, he switched to the side of the Allies! By 1948, he was the second highest officer in Burma, and fourteen years later, led a coup to become number one. It became quickly apparent that the general did not have all of his nuts and bolts tightened down and he made some very irrational decisions that started Burma on a downward economic spiral. One of his most famous decisions was creating the odd banknote denominations of 15, 35, 45, 75 and 90 Kyat. This decision was partly based on his lucky number of 9, and that his astrologer had told him they would be good numbers for the economy. I know it is morbid to think about researching the Obituaries sections of your newspapers, but if you read it everyday, you will eventually find someone who might have had information and pieces of interest to you (and us). After a respectful time, please contact the family about his military (or civilian) work. You might be able to save some files and pieces from being trashed, and purchasing them might even provide his or her survivors with needed funds. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Well it seems that I got confused again with Gram 812. It went out with subject line 811. If you need it resent, please tell me. I have the feeling that most of you are compensating for the editor's mistakes by checking these duplicates that come in. Then Joe Boling reported not receiving 810. I received mine, so once again, report if you need it sent. I can sense my own Gram new year's resolution developing here! No news from Ski who may be stuck in a computer desert or he might be playing with new loot. If his column comes in later, we will run it immediately (Ski, that means that we want it!). Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Hi again! If the "idea" of a "Top ten stories", etc. is accepted! I "think" we should call it the "Gramies" ((or similar spelling)) !!! with ten(?) different categories. I.E. Best find / discovery of the year! (#481 $5 4th printing?). Best story! Birth of the Data Base! The ANA scholarship program. Highest record price. And what about the Fest??, MPC 4th ed. etc. Enough! It's up to you to pick'em! Guy! Dear Guy, Why is it up to me to pick em? I cannot remember what I had for breakfast! Editor Dear Esteemed (?) Editor, I was searching through the junk box of John Sullivan, a Vienna, Virginia, numismatic and jewelry dealer, and found a Philippines 10 Pesos Pick-111a in VERY Poor condition. The condition was not a problem because it had written in ink; "Comp. of censor" and "JGB" below it. I tried to purchase it but John gave it to me after looking at its condition. I believe the "Comp." is for "Compliments". I am wondering if anyone disagrees with "Compliments"; has a similar piece; and/or if they know who the JGB censor is? I also found a more modern Japanese note rubberstamped with what appears to be an advertisement with a large British crown and "KEENE" below it for Joe Boling. Howard A. Daniel III Dear Gram, Howard Daniel mentioned our propaganda parodies (really forgeries) of the North Vietnamese dong notes. It is worth mentioning that we prepared the one dong note in six different varieties (minor size and translation difficulties). Howard said that there were complaints by North Vietnam. There were more than that. The "fellow travellers" (sometimes known as "useful idiots")waged quite a campaign in the international press and even in the left-wing magazines of the United States. There were numerous articles attacking our policy and claiming that we were destroying the economy of the poor hapless agragarian reformers of the north. When they squeal real good you know you hurt them! At the same time, publications that were more friendly to the war published stories that saw the banknotes as business as usual. For instance, Coin World 11 Oct 72 said "U.S. Dropping Copy Piasters on Viet Nam? and a companion story "Counterfeiting Tempts Nations During Wars."
