From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 816 Date: Saturday, December 28, 2002 12:06 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 816 Saturday December 28, 2002 Thurski’s Christmas By Larry “Ski” Smulczenski Christmas 2002 has passed and since we are in Central Texas for the holidays, Leroy the Redneck Reindeer led Santa’s team as the jolly old elf brought presents to all the good little kids. Leroy two-stepped across the chilly sky and you could hear his loud shouts of “Merry Christmas” as the team completed their planned delivery route. We didn’t get any of the snow that you readers in Oklahoma, the Midwest and up through the Northeast got on Christmas Eve and Christmas day, but Santa still did a great job of filling up stockings and responding to want lists. There should not have been many kids that were disappointed from what I saw. My wife gave me a great note in my Christmas stocking as her supplier didn’t forget and came through this year. It is a great addition to my MPC collection, a Series 661 nickel with serial number B00000000B. Yes, a specimen note and one that is quite special to me in that it is the series that I used for nine of the twelve months that I was in Nam. So this one will be cherished and mean a little bit more to me, but in all honesty, I feel that way about most of my notes. Less than a week remains of the year 2002 and as I sat back and reflected the other night on what has happened in the past year as far as our hobby goes, I have to say that it has been quite good. There definitely is a significant increase in the number of collectors that have joined us in the search for military collectibles and as a result the number of new and exciting discoveries that have been reported continues to grow. One of the things that pleases me the most is the number of collectors that are anxious to learn about the notes that they are collecting. We are not a hobby where one blindly sticks coins into holes in an album or pastes stamps onto outlines on a page, hoping to fill each series or year of issue. Our collectors seem a lot more interested in finding out why a note was issued, where it was used or how many of them were printed. Over the past year, I’ve had numerous emails asking questions about a recently acquired item or one that has been held for a long time, but that recently sparked some interest because of something that was just read or heard. These questions are appreciated in that some of them I can use to write a Thurski column for the rest of Gramland. One Gramster recently emailed me because of his interests in starting a collection of chits or tokens of all the battleships commissioned by the Navy. Battleships were named after states and he wondered how many I had in my collection. I had to admit that I only had a few, but I thought that with a dogged pursuit, he could come up with a significant collection and I encouraged him to “go for it” and hopefully in the foreseeable future write an article for the Gram on the new items he had found. I think that such a collection would also make a great display at one of the shows, with the various items laid out alongside a photograph of the ship it was used on. The Internet and ebay have been instrumental in uncovering many new items of interest to a lot of us. In the past, it took a lot of letter writing and phone calls to chase down something of interest, or else you might stumble across it at one of the shows. Today, persistent collectors are practicing their hobby surfing the Internet and doing quite well at it I must say. I personally mentioned to you the receipt from India a couple of Thurskies ago which was a pretty interesting find. There are many more of them still waiting to be discovered. That’s enough of the past. As I drive back to Florida this weekend, I hope to come up with some Professor Thurski’s Prognostications for the New Year. I will wear my magical St. Louis Cardinal baseball cap which has those mystical powers to foresee the future, and hopefully come up with some real revelations. Next week we will reveal them to you. May you and your family have a very Happy New Year and YOU a super successful year of collecting. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== TexFest is only a few hours away. Doug Bell has reported that there are about 10 reservations! That seems amazing to me for such an ad hoc thing only conceived a few days ago. Of course, we are an amazing group. As Doug mentioned, I have a few additions to the WWII book that I expect to share with the MiniFesters and I look forward to seeing some surprises too. Look forward to some reports on Monday and/or Sunday if we get lucky. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Hello Fred, Just a note to confirm that Joel and I will be at the FUN show- hope to see all the Gramsters etc. who will be on hand. Hobby New year! Neil S. Dear Gram, One thing more, with regard to series 541 and series 591 in "Europe." I think the last two countries in the European area to use MPC were Cyprus and Iceland (yes, Iceland is in European area. I used to be Stationed at HQUSEUCOM). So I would conclude that the sequence of discontinuation of MPC in the European area was as follows: 27 May 1958- Germany, France, and Italy (521 last series) 26 May 1961- England, Northern Ireland, Scotland (541 last series) 13 January 1964- Cyprus, Iceland (591 last series) Do you agree? David Dear David, Yes, I must agree with your conclusions although I am still in shock.
