From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 818 Date: Wednesday, January 01, 2003 11:44 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 818 Wednesday January 1, 2003 MACV Cards - One thing leads to another - an ongoing odyssey by Philip M. Goldstein In the latest development in the area of MACV Cards, a NAVY issue card has been confirmed. This confirmation now has the four branches of the armed forces under the Secretary of Defense issuing MACV Cards. The Coast Guard, which I suspect has issued cards (more on this later) is administered under the auspices of the Department of Transportation, but did play a role in the Vietnam Conflict. While searching the web, for information regarding Military Assistance Command, Vietnam currency regulations, I came across a real interesting website: http://www.riverinesailor.com/ In this website, I came across an image of a MACV Card, but could not make out the issuing service branch. I immediately emailed the contact listed, and here is the letter I sent and the reply I received: Hello, My name is Philip M. Goldstein, and I am currently researching MACV Card Form 5 / Currency Control Plates. I came across your web site, and can see an image, but I cannot make out the data imprinted on the bottom line. Can you please either: send me a high resolution .jpg scan / photo of your card or please type in the letters on the bottom of the card exactly as they appear.. You assistance would be so greatly appreciated. Reply: The embossed part has my SSN, last name, first initial, middle initial, rank, service number, and then a bottom line that has: N55525 USN embossed... >Regards, >Michael link to picture: Navy Mobile Riverine Force Vietnam Memorabilia, Vietnam Pictures, Military Assistance Command Vietnam documents http://www.riverinesailor.com/Memorabilia2.htm This simple email erases one more question mark in the MACV Card saga: The United States Navy did indeed issue MACV Cards. Remaining MACV Card questions that are needed to be answered: 1) Were any MACV cards issued to the Marine Corps other than the 1st Marine Division already confirmed? 2) Did the Coast Guard issue MACV cards? 3) Did the Merchant Marines issue MACV cards? 4) When was the initial introduction date of MACV cards? 5) When was the final withdrawal date of MACV Cards? Now, the reason I suspect the Coast Guard issued MACV cards, is on one boring weekday with nothing to do, I contacted Addressograph, the company which manufactured the blank MACV cards. They in turn, put me in contact with their historical department, which in turn put me in contact with one of their oldest serving salesmen. This gentleman's name is Richard Heath. I left a message on his voice mail, and quite honestly and pessimistically did not expect a return call. Two days later however, my phone did indeed ring, and it was Mr. Heath on the other end. Richard told me he remembered the MACV Cards, as he was the main liaison between Addressograph and MACV. He believes he still has his original documents pertaining to the designing, ordering, production and specifications of the MACV, somewhere in his files, and possibly his salesman samples. He seems to recall 5 issues of the cards going to each branch of the services, including the Coast Guard. The reason he remembers the Coast Guard, is during Operation Sail in 1975 and 1976 for the US Bicentennial, the Coast Guard approached Addressograph looking for a debit type card for the officers and crew of the "Eagle," which is the 3 masted training ship the Coast Guard sailed in the flotilla in NY harbor. Recalling from his memory, the crew of the "Eagle" was sailing to various ports up and down the East Coast of the US. As the crew would need to purchase various personal items from a widely varied source of BX / PXs in each port of call, some form of purchasing medium was needed, so a debit card was discussed, and the design was based on the formatting if not the principal of the MACV Card. As Richard was the head salesman for the Addressograph, the logistics of such a card were left to him. This "Canteen Debit Card" was created and issued to the crew of the US Eagle. If the information that Richard supplied wasn't enough, he and his partner have the paperwork and samples of the Canteen Debit Card still in their possession. Richard then proceeds to tell me, he was looking for an item that Addressograph manufactured, but no longer produced. He told me he was looking for a hand held "dog tag stamper"... which a person inserted a dog tag, and a piece of paper, and squeezed a handle which transferred the dog tag info to the paper via an inked ribbon, and he said he's looking for a while and can't find one. I replied," you mean the Model 70 Army Medical Dept. Dog Tag Imprinter?" He said yes, and asked if I was familiar with it. I just had to do a Fred Schwan chuckle, and said yeah, I'm familiar with it, especially the one in my hands. (Yes, I own one, as after I saw the one Gene Ryan brought to Fest III, I had to own one) He didn't ask if I would sell mine, because I never gave him the chance: I told him if he gets the paperwork, and the samples on the MACV cards and the CG Canteen Cards, I'll give him mine. So, as we speak, he is in the process of contacting his sales partner, and attempting to retrieve the documents and samples to send to me. I hope to have something in my hands by Fest IV. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Happy New Year to all Gramsters and families. Heck, happy new year to everyone everywhere. 2002 was an important year in many fields of endeavor, but especially so in MPC/military money. It does not seem possible that such interesting and important things keep happening, but they do, so I expect that they will in 2003 as well. The past few days got away from me so you did not receive a Monday or Tuesday Gram. I guess that I had to leave some room for improvement in 2003. One thing that I am going to work on real hard is the Gram dateline. I am certain that today is the first so we have a good start. Remember, you are planning on writing some predictions for 2003, we look forward to reading them. I may exercise my prerogative and demonstrate my well-known procrastination and make some predictions for 2002 or 2001. It is 10" long x 6 3/4" wide and 4 1/4" deep. On the inside lid is a felt type material used as padding?. The clasp is in fine condition, the top handle is fine, works well and is not rusted. In fact, the whole box is in very good condition with a dent here and there and scratches indicating decent usage and just to the right of the clasp are two holes...why, I have no idea? Here's some additional photos: A nice condition WWII type metal box that weights 2 lbs & 11 ozs and I'm sure some military collector out there could tell me exactly what this box is and what it might have been used for.
