Other than that the trip was uneventful. Had 156 emails accumulated over the 12 days that we were gone. There were 13 that were identified by the Norton anti-virus as having the W32.KlezH virus. I don't know who the SOB is that is sending this out but it is a real pain. The bad part is that in many cases it is attached to someone's address that I am very familiar with. I have received this virus on emails using the addresses of many of you Gramsters, but when I contact the addressee, they didn't send an email. So this thing is somehow selecting addressees that I normally get mail from and attaching itself to the email. Usually no text, just the attachment. Fortunately Norton quarantines them. I said in last weeks Thurski that I would come up with my set of predictions for the New Year today. I wore my mystical St. Louis Cardinal baseball hat all the way home from Austin and came up with a couple of ideas. I stuck them in that old mayonnaise jar under my bed until it was time to pull them out this afternoon. So here we go with Professor Thurski's predictions for 2003. 1. I predicted last year, that a great collection was going to go on the market. I missed it by a couple of months, but as you all know, the Marv Mericle award winning collection of MPC will be auctioned at the CPMX show by Lyn Knight in February. This year I'm going to go further out on the limb and predict that another collection will be placed on the market and this collection will a world wide military collection. 2. With more and more great collections going the auction route when they are sold, and the use of the Internet becoming more user friendly, I predict that auction companies will find a way to conduct real time bidding using the Internet so that collectors that are unable to attend still will be able to participate right down to the final hammer. 3. Many great items have been uncovered and bought on ebay in the last couple of years. Sniping has become a way of life for bidding on lots. I predict that ebay will realize that they are leaving money on the table by not extending the bidding until no bids have been placed for five minutes after the closing time and make this change. 4. The Gram has now been around for a number of years and we have seen well over 800 issues have been published. However, we have seen little in the way of format changes. I predict that we will emerge into the 21st century and see major format changes to include such niceties as embedded pictures in the text, etc. 5. BNR Press has long been the Number One producer of books on Military Currency but the publisher has always resisted the use of color in his publications. I predict that there will be a major change with future books printed in living color. At the very least, The Boss is going to need something to do when she retires from her teaching job, so she can requisition a box of crayons from the school and color the pictures. 6. An easy prediction is that Fore-Fest will be an even bigger hit than the last three. There will be new surprises and great thrills for all attendees which will exceed the number of attendees at Tri-Festa. 7. This past year, we found that AAFES was using fiber tokens for small change in Afghanistan because they didn't want to ship heavy coin into the area. I predict that as more troops are shuttled into the mid-east, AAFES will save more weight and the cost of producing these fiber tokens by printing paper small change. 8. And finally, I'm going to go way out on a limb and predict that that Smulczenski guy will get off his dead a.. and get that book that he has been working on ready for publication. Keep your fingers crossed on that one. I trust that all you Gramsters had a nice holiday season.
