In no area is this more true than the notes produced for use in Nazi occupied Ostland or “Eastern Region”. While the traditional view of Ostland included only the Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia), the more recent view has been expanded to include portions of northern Russia and Belarus. Unfortunately, when WWII Remembered was published back in 1995, our knowledge of these issues were very limited and the book only managed to scratch the surface of what is known, not to mention that much of what was written is erroneous. One of my favorite issues of this area are the Iron (Eisen) coupons. The issue is very simple in design, very difficult to find, but quite reasonable in price to purchase. The only listing of these coupons that I have been able to find is the 1999 publication “World War II German Occupation of the Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and North Russia, First Trial Catalog” by Ants Kulo and Juri Rudich. World War II Remembered makes no mention of these items (however I am sure that Fred can be persuaded to include them in the next edition). Images of the coupons can be viewed at: http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/700-799/mturner.htm Kulo/Rudich suggests the notes were prepared for issue in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Belarus. The coupons are quite small measuring 40x58mm and are uniface printings. The notes are all identical with the exception of color and denomination. Each contains the word EISEN (German for Iron) and the denominations are in kilograms. Denominations identified to date are 1kg (green), 5kg (orange), 10kg (lilac/purple), 25kg (grey), 100kg (brown) and 1000kg (red-violet). Coupons were printed on paper with a wavy watermark. Each note has an eagle overlaid with an I-beam as the central vignette, surrounded by swastikas in each corner. Kulo/Rudich also have listed a 50kg denomination, however they appear to have questioned if it was really produced/issued. No 50kg note has been identified to date. Over the past couple of years I have noticed a handful of 1kg coupons for sale on ebay, most out of the Baltic States. The other denominations have been difficult to find, however some remainder sets have been available for sale within the last year. The only denomination that I have not been able to acquire is the 1000kg piece. Juri Rudich indicated to me that only one example is known to date. Since 1999 a couple of minor varieties have been discovered. The first variety is of the 10kg coupon. There are two distinct colors of the coupon available. The above referenced images show the dramatic difference between the lilac and purple pieces. To be perfectly honest, I have seen just as many lilac pieces as purple. Are any other color variations known? Not yet but I would not rule out the possibility. The other variety that has been recently discovered is among the 1kg pieces. Rudich pointed out me a 1kg piece with the notation “L/0602” in the lower left corner of the note. What does the notation mean? Your guess is as good as mine. Has this notation been seen on any other denomination? Not yet. Kulo/Rudich indicates that several examples of uncut pairs and blocks have been observed. This would make sense in that most of the pieces have looked at have been cut very poorly with crooked edges and inconsistent cuts. Just how many pieces are on a block? I do not know yet. This is an area in WWII numismatics that we westerners are just beginning to take a good hard look at. Hopefully as we start to question these pieces more answers will surface. Your questions, comments and observations are greatly appreciated. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== BUSTED I was not silly enough to make a New Year’s resolution to nit miss a single day/Gram. I did make sort of an informal pledge not to miss two days in a row. So much for good intentions. Judy (aka the Boss) got sick on New Year’s Day. By noon on the second we took her to the local hospital. Of course I had my lap top so that I could publish the Gram. Recently I had upgraded to cable modem at headquarters so I anticipated having trouble hooking up via telephone from the hospital. I was correct. I could not make it happen. On Saturday I was able to steal a few hours away from the hospital to go home (HQ) to put out the Gram (and feed the cats and other approved tasks (the Gram was not on the approved list)). Well, in trying to get AOL to run from the hospital the settings needed for the cable modem had been changed. After some calling around, I found a tech number to call. Then I had a 40 minute wait. The first tech could not help me, but the second one fixed the problem in about a minute. By this time my pass had expired and I had to return to the hospital. On Sunday we were dissatisfied with the service at hospital one and took her to a larger hospital in Toledo (we had to sign a statement that we were leaving “against medical advice.” After getting Judy situated I headed for the lounge to take a nap. I woke up at 1 am this morning (Monday) sick. Really sick. I guess if one must get sick visiting a hospital is a good place to have it happen so I went to the emergency room. They fixed me up with about a gallon of IV fluids and I was ready to work on the late Gram. I broke into a nurses’ work room and found a very fast computer hook up. It was heaven. To my surprise the Gram box was not overflowing (full, but not stuffed). I was working on the Gram when the head sister-nurse challenged me. I had visions of her pulling a ruler and wrapping my knuckles so I evacuated the room as soon as possible. So here we are six days into the year and four Grams behind. In the past when we have missed Grams, we have extended subscriptions to cover the missing issues. I am not sure that we can do that in this case. Such an adjustment might put the Gram out of business. We will attempt to publish some double issues to make up for the missed issues. As the saying goes, we are sorry about the inconvenience. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Hello! Is anybody there???? Where are my GRAMS!! 2 issues in a week? I want a prorated REFUND for these missing days, with interest! Guy! :( Dear Gram, Hope you are having a HAPPY NEW YEAR but was sorry to hear that Judy is hospitalized. Hope she gets better soon. Mike Dear Mike, Thanks, word sure does get around fast! Editor Hello Gramsters, A little off topic, but of possible interest to all email users. This is in response to Ski's column in MPCGram #819, where he talks about email and the viruses that they sometimes carry. What many viruses do is quietly send infected emails from an infected users computer to everyone in that infected users email address or contact book every time they log into their email server. You might want to contact every known sender of infected email so they can clean up their computers with an up to date antivirus program and stop the spread. Take Care and Happy New Year!
