From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 823 Date: Friday, January 10, 2003 11:42 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 823 Thurski/Friday January 10, 2003 Run to FUN By Larry “Ski” Smulczenski On Tuesday night Harold Kroll drove over from Mobile, Alabama and spent the night so that we could get an early morning start to the FUN show in Orlando, Florida. We spent the evening looking at each others’ recent acquisitions and exercised a German dictionary trying to interpret some documents. Of interest was a document that appears to be some type of German pay voucher for a prisoner held in Czechoslovakia. The prisoner appears to have been Italian as he is described as an Italian military internee, Major Golliani. He was held in Stalag 357. An interesting part of the voucher is that it is written for 1731.87 Reichmarks then converted to 3463.74 zloty. So it appears we have an Italian prisoner held in a camp in Czechoslovakia being paid by the Germans in Polish zloty. It is dated 7 June, 1944, the day after "D" day. It is very interesting but confusing with all the countries involved. We were on the road by 7:30 Wednesday morning and on the way to Orlando. We arrived in Orlando about seven and a half later with the temperature in the high 60's. After checking in at the Quality Inn we went over to the convention center. The check in procedure was much improved with absolutely not waiting. Check in was less than five minutes compared to over 30 minutes last year. We immediately ran into Gramster Dave Seelye, still hobbling around with his cane. Dave was eager to start working the floor and it wasn't much later that I saw him with two uncirculated 461 $10 with consecutive serial numbers. Gramster Leo May brought his recently retired school teacher wife, Valerie to the show and had her working hard to set up his table. It wasn't long until we ran into Neil and Joel Shafer. Joel was out beating the bushes to find new treasures for future Lyn Knight auctions. Also saw Gramsters John and Nancy Wilson, David Amey, George Fitzgerald and John Parker. Thursday morning saw Marcus Turner scurrying to get his exhibit of Russian bonds displayed before the doors opened to the general public. He did a great job of getting everything set up and looking super. Unfortunately FUN officials do not give the keys to the cases to the exhibitors. They have to lock the cases for the exhibitors. Well, guess what? One of Marcus's cases wouldn't lock. So he had to start all over, get a new case, clean it up, replace the exhibit items. Seems like things never run smooth when you are in a hurry. We met a real interesting gentleman who is the head of the Tannu Tuva Collectors Society. This fellow was a font of information about stamps, money and history of this small country. He stated that the only bonds he had ever seen from Tannu Tuva was the one in World War II Remembered and the one in Marcus's exhibit. That is a real plus for Marcus. Also saw Gramsters Ray Czahor, Mike Cummings and Al Glasser. If anything exciting happens in the next couple of days, we will try to let you all know. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Duck! That was close! She thinks that she will catch me (again). She knows that I am looking for a computer—but she does not know that I have found a new place. It was not easy, but I got in. Security is certainly lax around here. Without the sister, the place would be gone. On the other hand, they DO have the sister on guard—with her ruler—so possibly they do not need to worry. Have you figure out that Judy and I are back in the hospital? Yes, a little relapse, but everything should improve shortly. Are you ready for this? The doctor treating her will probably come to the Fest! Sell, sell, sell! In fact he caught ME without my challenge coin! Judy has been most pleased with the many good wishes that you have sent and I have passed them along. So I have this new secret place to put out the Gram, the bad news is that I did not have all of my materials with me so I will probably mix up some text because this Gram was started on my computer at home. Oh well. I have to tell one little story relating to Ski’s article. The Tannu Tuva bond illustrated in Remembered (do not have the book handy to give a page number) is in my collection. I bought it at the 1994 NY International Coin Convention. Joe and I were there making a final push for information for the book and I was selling advertising. At the table of Bill Henderson, I found the subject bond. It was instantly recognizable as a WWII item related to the Soviet bond issues. Bill had it correctly marked as Tannu Tuva, but I did not have a clue what/where that was. Of course I bought the item and put it in the dark (black hole) and started researching it. The results are the listings in the book. Marcus has taken us much farther and probably will go even farther. I cannot wait! Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, Sorry to hear about Judy, and you as well. I've been out of pocket for a couple of weeks and noticed the blank spots in the Gram, but decided to read some before complaining. Glad I did. Good reasons for not putting it out with perfect regularity do exist, and unfortunately those "good" reasons, are really not good at all. May all that has gone wrong get better soon. Many of us are thinking of you. Bill Murray Dear Gram, Unless something unforseen comes up , It appears that I will be flying to the Fest with Doug Bell. :-) , I am looking forward to this very much. Hope Judy is out of the Hospital by now and that both of you are doing better . Sam Feeback Dear Sam, Great! You too were on that AWOL list. Every registrant extends the record participation!
