By Marcus Turner This was my first time attending the FUN show and I must admit that it has been a wonderful experience. I arrived with my father in Orlando late Wednesday night. Come Thrusday morning we were ready for the show. My window to set up my exhibit was fairly short so we were at the convention center well before 8:00am. I picked up my exhibitor bagde and set up the exhibit. As Larry mentioned in his report, I did have a minor snafu with one of the exhibit cases, but the FUN staff was well on top the situation, and had had everything set up before the 10:00am public opening. I first ran into Al Glaser and Larry Ski during the ribbon cutting ceremony to open the show. Shortly after we congregated at David Seelye's table with Larry and Harold Kroll. For a coin show, this was definitely one of the best I have ever attended. Others at the show were Mike Cummings, David Amey, Joel Shafer, Neil Shafer, Leo May, John & Nancy Wilson, Howard Daniel and Jack Lippincott. I was also very pleased to have met with Gail Baker, director of education for the ANA. For the past two she has been the organizational brains behind the ANA summer seminar. During the afternoon I was paged to the FUN information center to meet Ken Simon. Ken is the president of the Tannu Tuva Collector's Society that Larry mentioned in his article. Meeting Ken is significant because he was the person who was responsible for me finding someone that could translate Tuvan into English. He had great insight into the country and politics of the WWII era. Thanks Ken! Friday, rather than attending the show, I went fishing with my dad. For those sportsmen out there, the fishing was slow on lake Toho but I did manage to pull out a 4.5 pound bass. I must concede the fishing title to my dad who not only outfished me in terms of numbers but pulled a 5.5 pound bass. Saturday morning came around all too early. This would be a very eventful day. I had the privlidege of previewing some of the material that is going to be in the Lynn Knight auction in the Chicago CPMX sale. I believe that the Marv Mericle speaks for itself. For those who are more into WWII material, Knight is offering a SPECIMEN set of Armee Belgie notes. It is a coplete set! Another item that caught my eye was a complete set of India POW camp notes from Bophal and Ramgarh. One of my personal favorites was a 5000 franc French Equatorial Africa essay. This piece was never issued and only exists in essay format. This should be wonderful auction for all of us. Another highlight of the show was 13-year old Ben Kirsch of Sarasota Florida. This kid showed up at David and Harold's table and purchased a great pair of WWII notes. The first was a 100 dinar Serbia issue and the other was a 10 Katis Rubber Coupon from Sarawak. For a 13-year old to have an interest in such specialized items is truly spectacular. We treated him to a few gifts of various notes and a complimentary membership in the IBNS. I look forward to hearing from Ben in the future. I also had the privilege of meeting with Herman Van Lieshoult from the Netherlands. He was attending this show while visiting his daughter in the US. He too a particular interest in the EEN BROOD Dutch "Bread" coupons. We further asked to look at the newly discovered Belgian Winterhelp notes. He noted that they were indeed lottery notes supporting the Nazi Winterhelp program. Further they were printed in French and Dutch. This was strange since I was expecting it to be in Flemmish. He further explained that Harold's collections only consists of a copule of the various series. It appears as though this discovery has only touched the tip of the iceberg. Another highlight of the show was talking with Wendell Wokla. Anyone who known Wendell, is familiar with his specialty in Indiana and Ohio National Banknotes and obsolete notes. I know him best for his book on Indiana Obsolete notes. Wendell is also signed up to attend MPC Fest IV. He has never been a collector of MPC or WWII material, but has religiously reads the Gram. I was excited to see that he purchased a very nice set of German Winterhelp notes. Could this be Wendell's big break into the WWII community? I sure hope so as he is a terrific numismatist. Can we expect to see Wendell start the Obsolete Gram? Lets hope so. Wendell, we look forward to having you at Fest IV. I typically do not expect much from traditional coin shows, however this one has been absolutely wonderful. It has been a great opportunity to meet with old friends and make some new ones and even spend some good time with my father. The show ends tomorrow (Sunday) and I will fly back to Indy in the evening. Congratulations to the organizers of the FUN show. I look forward to returning next year. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== The latest problem with the nun nurse patrol was the cell phone. I was caught talking to a Gramster on the ol’ portable, but that is strictly illegal here in the hospital or within 20 feet of the sister anywhere. I told her that I was talking to a Gramster on important Fest business, but she was not impressed. I invited her to the Fest, but did not get so much as a maybe. Now I am sure that she has a tail on me and possibly a hit squad is being organized. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, I am interested in the MPC meeting Ohio on Feb. 27 thru the March 2. I just got back into collecting MPC again would like to learn more about what is new. thank you Bob Dear Bob, Thanks for writing—and welcome back. We have missed you! Below you will find some information on MPC Fest. A complete training schedule will be published in a few days. We only promise a good time! Editor Dear Esteemed (?) Editor, I was at a stamp show a couple of weeks ago that is almost next door to my wife's condo and found a man that has auctions with a LOT of military stuff. When I got home, I typed in "WWII" in his search for his next auction (Dec 2) and found a photograph of the Edison submarine. Wasn't it the one on a VN MPC? There are many other lots of interest to your readers. The website is "http://www.jamesjreeves.com" and you can bid via email, and there is another auction Dec 30. Good hunting!! Howard A. Daniel III Dear Howard, Looks like I made us miss the Dec 30 auction in addition to the Dec 2 one, but the web site might still be interesting. Then again, maybe I ran it before and this is just a test!
