From: "Fred Schwan" To: Subject: MPC Gram 825 Date: Monday, January 13, 2003 4:35 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 825 Monday January 13, 2003 WWII US Notes-Updates By Peter Huntoon I have been working on a complete revision of the sections covering the U. S. World War II Hawaiian and North African issues for Fred's next edition of "Remembered." One thing that you may know about that is generally missing from the numismatic literature is the post-Sicily use of the yellow seals. Everything you read states that they were used in North Africa, then used again in the invasion of Sicily, and maybe the invasion of Italy. Then the implication is that Allied Military lira replaced them as the Italian front was consolidated because a new type of currency was needed for both troop offensives and the civilian occupation. However, there is a great inconsistency and ambiguity here. The first AMC was made in 1943 for Italy. However, all three denominations of the yellow seals continued to be printed through 1943 and 1944, with the last delivery to the Treasurer being made May 8, 1944. Clearly they were being used for something long after the Sicilian and even Italian invasions. The questions I have for you follow. Do you have any knowledge and documentation of where they were used after Sicily? Is there any evidence that yellow seals were in fact used on the Western front after the invasion of Normandy? I suspect there is a good chance they were used along the western front because they arrived at the treasury just before D-Day. Below is a draft of the overview on the yellow seals that I have written for Fred/Joe's book. Obviously this is incomplete and possibly misleading. Would you be kind enough to provide anything that will improve it, or that will flesh it out. I want to get it right. It would be most helpful if you would send your comments directly to me, as well as to the GRAM. Thank your very much for your help. My e-mail address is: peter.huntoon@att.net INTRODUCTION There were two grand issues of World War II military currency interspersed within the regular United States civilian silver certificate and federal reserve issues: the Hawaii and North Africa/Sicily invasion notes. The first of these were the Hawaiian issues, conceived in January 1942, shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The first deliveries of the Hawaiian notes to the treasury were made early in June 1942. Initially they were designed to be defensive; that is, a distinctive currency that could be demonetized if we lost the Hawaiian Islands to the Japanese. They evolved into a form of invasion currency as the Pacific campaigns unfolded and the Hawaiian Islands become a secure back area. In contrast, the North African issues were purely offensive, being conceived by the War Department in cooperation with the Treasury in September 1942 prior to Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa. Desired was a distinctive currency that could be demonetized if our efforts failed allowing significant volumes of our currency to fall into German hands. NORTH AFRICAN CURRENCY The invasion of North Africa commenced just after 1 am under a new moon on November 8, 1942, when the first of 107,000 troops began landing at Casablanca, Morocco, and at Oran and Algiers, Algeria. They were opening a front spanning 900 miles stretching from the Atlantic coast west of the Straights of Gibralter to well along the Mediterranean coast east of Gibralter (Collier, 1977). Two thirds of the invaders were American, one third British. The Americans, and maybe the British, carried the distinctive yellow seals. Operation Husky, until then most massive amphibious assault ever attempted, followed. Husky was the Allied offensive to establish a toehold on Sicily, to begin hitting the Axis in its soft underbelly. Wallace (1978) relates that the landings began July 10, 1943, and within 48 hours 80,000 troops, 7,000 vehicles, 300 trucks, 600 tanks and artillery pieces were shoved ashore. The flotilla that delivered them involved 3,300 seagoing craft of every description. Some 4,600 paratroopers carried by 222 planes and 144 gliders arrived three hours earlier to cause havoc behind the beachheads. The invasion force left from staging areas in England, the United States, North Africa and the Middle East. They carried yellow seals as invasion notes, notes that were serving for a second time as true military payment certificates in the German theater. The use of the yellow seals subsequent to the invasion of Sicily is poorly documented in the numismatic literature. The last of them were made in June 1944, revealing that they probably played a role in the D-day storming of Normandy and the western front against Germany. Historically, they represented a transition between the regular currency of the United States, Allied Military Currency, and specially designed post war military payment certificates. By 1943, the time had come to design currencies that could serve the economies of the vanquished nations. The Italian lira were the vanguard. Allied Military lira notes were secretly prepared in advance of the invasion of Italy. The work on the special lira began back on March 24, 1943, even before Sicily was invaded (Bureau of Engraving and Printing, 1962). =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Until recently, in response to Pete's questions above, I would have answered that I did not think that yellow seal dollars made it onto the continent of Europe after the invasion of Sicily, at least not in a major way. Now I can state with assurance that yellow seal dollars were paid to service members returning to the United States. During the months after D-Day, there would not have been too many of these and the need would have been slight. In 1945 on the other hand the demand became significant. This little tidbit of information came from a document that will be reproduced completely in the Gram within the next few weeks, but this is all of the information that pertains to Pete's questions. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, Hope to see you at the FUN. This morning I am heading over to the pre-FUN in Clearwater, no table just walking the floor. AT FUN we'll have a corner table and as soon as I get the table number I will send it in. We had a LAKE-FEST here in Lakeland the other day, with gramsters from both coasts attending! Nick Schrier all the way from California stopped by the shop here in Lakeland. We did not print any money for this get-together as it was such short notice, but Nick and I have agreed to autograph any MPC notes you send to us and return them with the now-famous LAKE-FEST stamp. Please send only Series 471 or 541 $5.00 notes! By the way I registered a plate number 5 and 8 in Doug's database [papermoneyworld.net] the other day. Anyone (Joe or Fred need them, advise). Interestingly when adding notes to the database I discovered I had a pretty neat fancy serial number, a Series 681 $1.00 C05555551C. It is now on its way to Doug Bell.......... Also the ad placed in the Gram was very successful, quite a few sales. Thanks! About that virus. This year I have restored my hard drive THREE (3) times! Supposedly I have the Klez32 and would very much enjoy getting my hands around the neck of the guy who started this. Just recently I restored my drive to the original state and it seems to still be in there somewhere. Norton found no viruses, but McCaffee found some that it said could not be cleaned. Even after my drive was restored I started receiving weird emails from people no longer in my address book and people also receiving them from me. How this is possible with my hard drive supposedly as clean as a whistle is a mystery to me. Just this morning And another thing happened recently that made me change all my passwords for all my different accounts. As an added measure I put all the passwords in Japanese and added numbers as well. Why? eBay called me one day a couple weeks ago and wanted to know if I had recently listed a lot of Nokia cameras, cell phones, etc. When I said no I found out that some one had broken into our eBay account, change our password and email address! Then they listed a bunch of items and was hoping that they'd get the emails and money when the items were bought. eBay promptly cancelled all the bogus auctions and is working on the case. BE CAREFUL is all I can say. I am ready to go back to the good old days of snail mail, checks for payment, and printed pricelists! A VERY Happy New Year to all gramsters!
