I will always have an interest in that because from 1953 to 1955 I lived on a ridge that looked down on the beaches where Patton's troops came ashore. My father was an OSI agent at Nouasseur Air Base, inland from Casablanca, in those years. We lived in Fedala, about fifteen miles up the coast from Casa (and about 30-odd miles from the base--our Moroccan school bus drivers occasionally raced each other over the route). We lived on an estate named Tranquillite, which belonged to Prince Murat (one of the pretenders to the throne of France), in a house known as Villa Dame Bleu (it was haunted by a ghost in a blue djellaba). The Prince did not live there full time--in fact, I'm not sure he was there at all during our tenure. The estate manager was a Chilean whose name I don't recall. The estate was primarily a farm, with crops alternating between wheat and tomatoes as the seasons rolled. The Prince's house was Patton's HQ during the days (weeks?) following the landing. Villa Dame Bleu was used to house officers on Patton's staff. There was a small wooded area between our house and the Prince's (with another small house between, also rented to a US military family). Those woods, in 1953 (eleven years after the landings), were still criss-crossed with trenches, mostly filled to a depth of about eighteen inches (and the fillings were often garbage and feces, not pleasant to play in). About two miles away, on a beach south of the center of town (we were about even with the northern limit and about a half mile inland) was a coast artillery gun of moderate caliber, in the shadow of which I one day picked up a piece of metal with a center hole that seemed to be a washer, except for the potential inscriptions under the heavy layer of corrosion. I took it home and applied the Brillo to it; it turned out to be a Moroccan copper-nickel 25 centime piece, my first example of obsolete Moroccan coinage. I may still have that in the junk box I use for kids, though I expect it has been given away (I recall seeing the first foreign coin I ever collected leave that way in 1984--a Belgian zinc one-franc piece (SB6104) that came from under the linoleum in the kitchen in San Antonio when I was in the fifth grade). For my biographical collection I long had examples of the notes printed in Casablanca shortly after the landings (SB1511 and 1512), representing Morocco but not Fedala. I knew of no emission from Fedala that I could collect. Lo and behold, one day in an Eric Boone auction there appeared a share certificate from a fishing company in Fedala, French Morocco.
