From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 827 Date: Wednesday, January 15, 2003 6:16 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 827 Wednesday January 15, 2003 Fun show report I was sorry to read about the sickness for you and Judy. Judy does not deserve it, but I have to think about it for you. The FUN Show was pretty good for me but all of them are because I enjoy the fellowship there and any purchases are just gravy. There were a couple of Gramster MIAs, but I did meet quite a few of them there! On Friday, I often rested at David Seelye's table and there was often a very rude man by the name of Harold Kroll there with him. Do any of you know him? The only item I bought that day was a 1818-dated Mexican 8 Reales with chops from Narit of Mikell International. Narit also introduced me to his new bride, which was quite a surprise. I hope both of them are very happy together!! But the 8 Reales chops also included what I think is a countermark for someone. It is a very small bow and arrow!! Anyone know about it? Len Harsel's wife Sue paged me. She was inviting me to dinner with the Murphy's but I had to decline because I usually go to dinner on Friday nights with someone else. But then that person was unavailable, so I went to bed early. Saturday morning I was bothered with a telephone call from Larry Thurski about a box of Series 692 oil paintings he is taking to something called the MPC Fest. The $10 painting already belongs to you, but the others can be sold to anyone who wants them. I need to figure out the minimum price for the other four paintings because I had to pay $117.50 extra to get it on my flight back from Ho Chi Minh City. Anything over my minimum can go into the scholarship fund. How does that sound? Then I was forced to sit at the same breakfast table with this Harold Kroll guy and Mr Thurski. But two gentlemen by the name of Turner showed up! Marcus and his father sat at a nearby table, and then David Seelye and his wife were behind us. The atmosphere definitely got better than when I first arrived! I went by many tables of Gramsters and others with SE Asian and Military "stuff" but many of them were busy and I did not stop to chat. I probably looked through the stock of about ten dealers, but I found only one note to buy and it was a rare Pathet Lao overprint from Ian Marshall's stock. It was nice to see Ian's wife again. After taking a few pictures for my World Coin News article about FUN (and Raleigh's show on the way down), I said goodbye and was on the road a little early to meet two godchildren near Gainesville, Florida, for our annual dinner. I wish more of you were down there because it was a nice time and the temperature was in the 60s and 70s, compared to a high in the 30s back here in Virginia and probably where you are located too. See you in Charlotte? Subject: Item for MPCGram - US Constabulary United States Constabulary in Germany/Austria by Howard A. Daniel III I just received my January 2003 issue of "Army" magazine and found an article titled "Mobility Vigilance Justice" by BG Albin F. Irzyk, US Army Retired. The article was about his experiences in the creation and serving in the United States Constabulary (USC), which "policed" large parts of Germany and Austria after WWII. It was also about the opening of the USC Museum at Fort Riley, Kansas on June 21, 2002. This unit was present in Germany and Austria when many of the financial instruments collected by Gramsters were introduced and used. I am sure that this museum will at least give one or more of you many leads to information and pieces of interest to Gramsters! The names of who served in the USC should be traced to their homes to find those who are still alive, but also those who have deceased and maybe their survivors kept their papers and souvenirs. And you might be lucky and actually see some of the pieces and documentation about them in the museum. It appears the general is still alive, and I think with a little research, we can find where he is retired in the US. I am sure he has some first-hand information and maybe some "souvenirs" in his possessions. Who is going to be the first person to visit the museum, and who will contact the general? Howard A.
