From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 828 Date: Thursday, January 16, 2003 4:11 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 828 Thursday January 16, 2003 The Thurski Report Since I haven't seen it announced in any of the recent Grams, let me tell you that Marcus Turner won First Place in the Paper Money Division for exhibits at the FUN show. Marcus's exhibit of Russian Bonds and Lottery Tickets is a great exhibit and he has done a lot of work with it. In my opinion it should also have been selected as Best of Show as it truly was the best exhibit on the floor. But since Paper Money is the poor step cousin of those darn things that don't bend, the event judges chose not to agree with me. We just have to keep working to educate those hard money people that we do have something to offer and maybe someday they will see the light. Could be that a complementary subscription to the Gram might help. Anyway, congratulations to Marcus. As we say down south, "You dun good". Keep up the good work. This is the week of the month that I go back into my stack of stuff and pull out another 25 year old Bank Note Reporter. It's always interesting to go back and relive what was happening in the hobby world that long ago and the January 1978 issue is no disappointment. The front page of the issue has a story entitled "Schwan-Boling Book Slated" It seems hard to imagine the world without a Schwan-Boling book, but at this time, World War II Military Currency was still about six months away. This was the first major release for the BNR Press which was incorporated by Schwan in January of 1977. There are seven photo's that picture the type of notes that would be featured in the new book. One of them still remains on my most coveted and wanted list. It is the 100 Kroner from the Danish series of Allied Military Currency. The note pictured is a Specimen and is still the plate note in World War II Remembered. Until this last year, the note was only known as a Specimen, but a Gramster in Denmark has now reported it in a collection as an issued note. Just this past week, Pete Huntoon had a Gram article about looking for addition information on the Hawaii and North Africa notes. Well. 25-years ago he had a column in the Bank Note Reporter about how the CxxxxxxxxC serial numbers of the Hawaii and North Africa notes interfaced with the regular issues. And some of you folks think this hobby is static! The research is never ending. Under the heading "IBNS Meeting" it was reported that Neil Shafer presented a program at the New York International Coin Convention about the Emergency Scrip of Modern Italy, 1943 to date. Of course this included the circulating checks of Italy issued during World War II. The Military Vignettes column by Fred Schwan was a review of the military numismatic happenings of 1977. It was in that year that the MPC Series 651 ractionals were confirmed. Also uncovered in that year were the Joint Export-Import Agency Travelers' Coupons for use in Germany. Now twenty-five years later, we discover these coupons were denominated in Reichmarks as well as Deutsche Marks. It was also in that year that the fourth and fifth series of BAFSV's and the essay's of the BMA second series were first reported. The BMA's never saw the light of day as they were abandoned for the BAFSV's. Another great find in 1977 was the report of the Turnkey Scrip printed for use of a contractor who was to build the huge Tuy Hoa complex in Viet Nam. It was never issued, but is of interest to me and to another Gramster who had a set of these notes for a very short time before they were snatched from the back seat of his car. These two stories about these notes have been printed in earlier Grams. Finally, a picture appears of a much younger Fred Schwan, nattily attired in a leisure suit (remember them?) accepting a best of show award for his presentation of Military Currency of Occupied Germany at the Michigan State Numismatic Society Convention. The one you will get a kick out of is that a gentleman by the name of 'William Shields won first place in US Paper Money for his display of none other than US Military Payment Certificates, Series 681. The category was divided into US and Foreign, so Fred came through the foreign ranks to the Best of Show award. ******************************************************* Sick call ******************************************************* As of last chat with Fred, Judy may be getting out of the hospital tomorrow And Fred says thanks a lot from everybody.
