I have seen the piece, and it obviously is not a cut-down version of a round token; there are rims on all edges of both sides. It is magnetic, as it should be. In an email exchange with Billings, Campbell says he believes it is the discovery piece. I expect Billings will have it up on eBay shortly. At the same show where I saw that piece, I acquired a group of French charity pieces not unlike the Bons de Solidarite. These have no proper denominations; will someone with better French than mine please tell us what these say? FACE: Cent Vaillants 100. Les cathedrales de France vaillantes, joyeuses et fieres chantent comme nos ames a la joie de servir. Designer apparently Henri Neveu. Imprint Edipax, Paris. Images of two cathedrals. BACK: Cent Vaillants 100. Si-ce n'est pas le seigneur qui construit le cote, en vain travailent ceux qui batissent. Initials CV and AJ (or AU) in emblems at corners; same designer and imprints as face. Images of children building cathedrals and Christ overwatching. I translate the inscription as: (face) 100 valiants. The brave cathedrals of France, joyful and proud, sing with our spirits to the joy of service. (back) Is it not the Lord who builds the number, in vain we work in masonry (doubtful translation). FACE: 50 Cinquante Vaillants 50. Tous unis pour monter. Same designer/imprint. Roped climbing party ascending a glacier. Same initials in corners as back of 100 vaillants piece. BACK: 50 vaillants. Toujours plus haut toujour plus beau. Images of castle on hill, valley with town and bridge, large two-engine monoplane above. Initials AJ (AU) in emblem at lower center. Designer HN and same imprint as above. I translate the inscription as: (face) All together for climbing. (back) Ever higher, ever better. All of these are in wretched condition, with pieces missing, multiple tears, and stains. The 50v is larger than the 100v. Third type, uniface: Dix Vaillants. L'ame vaillant a toujours le sourire, le coeur vaillant fait bien ce qu'il fait. Le coeur vaillant est ardent au travail comme au jeu. L'ame vaillant a le regard franc et le coeur pur. Nous referons. Une France plus belle. Images of five girls facing five boys, a white Latin cross between, faint letters US on either side of cross. Same initials in emblems as above pieces, but this time the AJ/AU is on the left, and looks more like AV; still CV at right. Designer F.A.Breysse, no imprint. I translate the inscriptions as: The valiant friend is always a delight, the valiant heart is good. The valiant heart is strong and work becomes a game. The valiant friend is a sincere look and a pure heart. We trust. One France, most good. Please offer improvements on the translations, and can anyone provide the significance of the initials? Last item--Ration Card. Atlantic Base Section Transient/Army Exchange Service NAFW-ATC. This card will be issued to all transients in the ABS area. The holder may purchase all items on the reverse side, plus beverages, ice cream, magazines, books, native goods and other unrationed items, but not clothing or equipage.
