From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 836 Date: Sunday, January 26, 2003 11:24 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 836 Sunday January 25, 2003 Seattle Show Report By Tom Koch I had a table at the Boeing Coin Club Show last weekend. A series 591 5.00 serial G01131250G disappeared from my case.Police report filed. Other than that the show was very successful from the selling viewpoint. I did not buy much at all; just a few common pieces from Bill Henderson and some very nice food stamp/coupons including several mint complete 10.00 books at face. The display of the replicas on a foam board display was very successful. I would ask the young kids which series/design they really liked and then gave them a piece in a sleeve to take home. Lots of fun hearing C day stories and other type stories; one in particular I will share. An American serviceman is in Japan and marries a local girl. He is quite a drinker and she is concerned about him blowing his money and not saving it. He comes home and passes out and she proceeds to take large mpc pieces out of his wallet and squirreling them away. This goes on for a while until they are transferred to the states. She has no idea that this stuff will not be honored in the states. When she goes to the bank in the US she suddenly learns her dilemma of what to do with this mpc. Fortunately, the mpc was still valid so they were able to send it back to Japan and get things worked out. Netscape and the Military Money Database By Doug Bell We have received several complaints from collectors that they are unable to access the MPC data base when using Netscape Navigator as the web brouser. We have worked on this problem without a final solution. However, I did find the article below at the Netscape web site. Hopefully, this will help users. I would like to know if this works and/or if there are continued problems. Please contact me at doug@papermoneyworld.net. WWII Belgrade Refugee Camp Money By Marcus Turner Yugoslavia had to be one of the more confusing countries during World War II. The country was divided into six federative units and by 1941 control of the units was divided between Italy and Germany. The Soviet Union managed to exert a significant political influence over the area and was just one of many sources of resistance to the Axis occupation. World War II Remembered gives a fairly decent synopsis of the complex political situation during the war. Over the last two years I have managed to make it to the papermoney show in Valkenburg, Netherlands (commonly known as the Maastricht show). One of the best qualities of this show is the vast diversity of material available as well as the expertise of the individuals selling the material. Extremely scarce material from Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Macedonia (Yugoslavia) has always been available during this event. Last year one such item caught my eye. It was a version of the 100 Dinara notes that most of us are familiar with. The note is much like the National Bank of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia piece: the central vignette of a seated woman with sword and back containing three sailboats, containing Cyrillic text. This Axis occupiers quite often utilized these notes during WWII for various purposes, the most famous of which was as safe conduct pass (propaganda note) produced by the Axis forces to be used against the Soviet lead resistance as shown on page 1002 of WWII Remembered. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/800-899/marcus2.htm This particular note caught my eye because it had an unusual overstamp, on top of watermarked area. The person who sold me the note explained that the overstamp identifies the note from the Belgrade #3 Refugee Camp. The best information I could find on the note came out a book that I also purchased at the 2002 show. It is titled Banknotes of the States of the Former Yugoslavia 1767 – 2002 by Borna Barac. The book is wonderful for two reasons. First it is printed in FULL color and second is written in both the Slavic and English languages. While it is primarily a catalog, there are some brief histories provided. The selection on the Refugee Camps (1941 – 1945) reads “When the Independent State of Croatia was proclaimed in 1941, a large number of Serb refugees from Croatia and Bosnia arrived. They were placed in the newly formed refugee camps where money of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was verified. The stamps were always blue, oval of different dimensions, and written in Cyrillic alphabet.” If you are fortunate enough to own a copy you can reference the section on page 225. Three different camps are identified only as Belgrade 1, Belgrade 2 and Belgrade 3. The old issues of notes including 100 dinara 1929, 500 dinara 1935, and 1000 dinara 1931 were subject to the overstamping. Each camp had its own distinct overstamp. My 100 dinara note had the overstamp from Belgrade Camp 3. While WWII Remembered does list a few of the overprinted/propaganda versions of this note, it does make any mention of the Belgrade Refugee Camp series, so don’t go looking too hard for it in your book. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Super Sunday. This day is to the National Football League what the Fest is to MPC collectors. Today they intersect. A California collector has arranged for the NFL officials to use a FEST IV challenge coin for the pre-game coin toss! If we are lucky there will be a close up of the coin thus introducing many millions of fans to the wonderful world of MPC. Possibly the “coin” will then be displayed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame! Perhaps the teams will want to come to the Fest! We cannot accept all of the Fans at the game, but we can make room for the teams! Of course, if the teams do come, the hotel might fill up so you had better get your reservation in before game time! Remember, send your reservation to MPCGram@yahoo.com, do not send it to the hotel! Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Editor, Put me down as coming to FEST. Also, in your schedule, could you put the name of the Hotel and address for those driving, along with a phone number? Thanks Marv' Marv, Great, you have been removed from the AWOL roles! There are a few others who must step up and register: 40 is in sight, is 50 possible? Since yours is the second complaint (suggestion) about the hotel address, I guess that it is about time that I act on it! The particulars are in the Fest notice below.
