From: "MPCgram" To: Date: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 11:09 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 839 Wednesday January 29, 2003 Property accountably by the Government I was in a coin shop in Lawton the other day visiting with Wayne Pierce who was a pay officer when in the service. He enlighten me with a story I just have to tell. One of his duties was to over see the disposition of lost materials. He was given explicit orders that a weapon was never lost, DO NOT excuse a solder under any circumstances period! There was and instance where a weapon slid out of a helicopter as it was avoiding ground fire and did a sharp bank. All personal in the unit told Wayne that the solder should not be held liable. The weapon was only a M-16 riffle costing $95. Wayne considered the proposal and attempted to convince his commander only to be warned not to excuse something like that and don't ever ask him again. A short time later there was a pay officer who had virtually the same accident, but what was lost was 2 briefcases containing $2.5 million in mpc. This was a lot of money but it was no problem to get dismissed. The soldier was not held responsible for the money. Where We Were in Vietnam: A Comprehensive Guide to the Firebases, Military Installations and Naval Vessels of the Vietnam War, 1945-1975 by Michael P. Kelly Review by Howard A. Daniel III This book was reviewed by Matthew J. Seelinger in the Fall 2002 issue of "On Point" magazine. The author; Michael P. Kelly, is a veteran of the 1st Bn, 502nd Inf, 101 AB Div. His book has about 6,000 firebases and landing zones, 2,000 airfields, and 700 Navy and Army vessels that were in the Vietnam War Combat Zone. One interesting item in the review is that a small number of advisors from Spain served in Viet Nam from 1966 to 1970. Is that country listed as a user of our MPC? I am sure they were allowed to use it on our installations if they were part of the Allied Forces in Viet Nam. I recently saw this book in a Borders Book Store but I did not buy it because it was the only one on the shelf and it was heavily damaged. I looked through it and did not find several locations of intelligence activities and special operations I worked at or in, but they might be subordinate to other locations and appear in them (I hope). But, even if they are missing, I will buy this book for my library. It was published by Hellgate Press in Central Point, Oregon in 2002. Its ISBN is 1-375-55571-625-3 and has 848 pages. The retail price is $39.95, but I am sure it can be obtained from Amazon and other booksellers at a discount. I highly recommend that it be in the libraries of all MPC and military token collectors of the Vietnam War. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== I will have to take another pass on my editorial. Sorry. Today was part two of the journey to pick up the books. Actually, it was yesterday and today. As you can expect with me, it was an adventure. Details tomorrow. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Editor, howdy, Fred, Sorry, I can't make the Fest...again...not enuf $$$ nor time... the Courts of Texas and my clients need me here... However, the reason for this letter is your statement regarding the attendance of Ms. Wilson and Ms. Bueschel as "Fest Auxiliaries"... Seems to me the ladies have been an integral component of the military for a very long time and, as such, should NEVER be referred to in any manner that would belittle their contributions to the cause and effort. While I do not know Ms. Bueschel, I have had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Wilson and in my humble opinion, she is one of the foremost Numismatists in our century (20th and 21st). To relegate her to being a mere 'Auxillary' is to fail to recognize her person and achievement. From your own statements, I believe I can include Ms. Bueschel in this catagory. In any event, I know that even in her presently diminished state due to illness, you got a REAL problem with your missus, Judy [or as is so often stated in the 'Gram... THE BOSS]. Oh, I pity you. While I have no such personal experience, I would believe hat being in a dog house on the south shore of Lake Erie in February would not be a nice place to be... You best find a way out of this mess...QUICK!!!! Jay in Garrison, TX P. S. Well, as you've told all of us...you have been sick, too... Dear Jay, You are certainly correct about Nancy Wilson, but you were wrong about what I said about the Fest auxiliary. Not only are Nancy and Tiffany Festers (as opposed to auxiliary), I believe that I had it right in the Gram. Below is the text from the editorial on this topic. “The registration of Tiffany and Cameron Bueschel is another exciting development for Fest IV. Not only is Cameron the first YN, Tiffany along with Nancy Wilson will be the first women to attend and participate as Festers. We certainly appreciate the Fest Auxiliary, but these bold women want to be Festers! “Furthermore, these new registrations put us tantalizingly close to two of our goals: 40 registered Festers and 12 new Festers. We can make those goals. Register now or recruit a friend! “There was a hidden down side to the Bueschel registrations. Gail Baker, who had previously registered, has cancelled because of a conflict. Hopefully, we will see Gail at Fest V (goals 60 Festers, 12 new Festers).” Editor Dear Esteemed Editor, You forgot the following at the end of my Numbers (and Blocks) article; "have still not been replaced with a better note in my collection. "Thank you very much Michele!!" " when you published it. Howard A. Daniel III Dear Howard, Sorry about the error, The entire article is repeated below. Numbers (and Blocks) by Howard A. Daniel III A January 6 "Coin World" article by Michele Orzano has the title of "Serial Numbers". It jolted me into remembering the time when I was educated to be interested in paper money serial numbers (and blocks). My first real suggestions that I pay attention to them was from Joe Boling when we were stationed together in the late 1970s in Heidelberg, Germany, while we were still in the Army. He got me going, but I did not yet have much enthusiasm. But during Joe's influence, I wrote the second edition of my book on the French Southeast Asian issues and there are more numbers in it! But when I came back to Virginia after Heidelberg, I was introduced to E.H. "Hank" Barton. This man was the ultimate collector and researcher of blocks and serial numbers!!! He and I collected separate areas, so I would defer to my elder and he would go through a dealer's junk box before me. After the stack of his rejects was a substantial size, I would start going through it. Hank had at least four eyes! When I missed one of my Southeast Asian pieces with an unusual or special block, he would growl at me that I just missed something, while he was still looking at notes! I would look back in my rejects and see a Southeast Asian note, but nothing special about it. After I could not come up with a reason to select it, he would tell me that it is probably a replacement, or something else special, and then I would notice what he was talking about and select it. After about five years with Hank, I was pointing out notes he missed! As he aged, he did miss some pieces, but I found out later, he already had one in his collection like it in most cases. Then he told me he wanted me to drive him out to "Memphis" (for the International Paper Money Show). What was Memphis? He told me it was "the" paper money show in the world and he had to attend it before he died. That June, I drove him out to it and we stopped in almost every major city and town on the way. We found paper money in many places to buy, but we also found dealers who had packed up their paper money and were taking it to Memphis for a better price. That first year, the show was still in the Holiday Inn south of the city. We were on the bourse every single minute from opening to closing time! Hank did not even break for lunch, but I would bring him some water and other drinks once in awhile. At the end of each day, we ate in our hotel restaurant and then collapsed in our room. That first year, we each came back with a very large stack of notes and we probably did not spend $50 each for them! Hank passed away quite a few years ago now, but he is profoundly missed by me and many other collectors like Neil Shafer, Joe Boling and many others. Michele's article brought back a lot of good memories of Hank (and others who have helped me), and a lot of good memories of some very special finds in junk boxes that have still not been replaced with a better note in my collection. "Thank you very much Michele!!" =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== 2003 February 1 deadline for Fest auction material.
