From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 842 Date: Sunday, February 02, 2003 12:21 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 842 Sunday February 2, 2003 Edmund Dulac 1882-1953 By Marcus Turner If you ask any collector of WWII era papermoney what the most beautiful ever issued is, you will find several French notes near the top of the list. Many of the vignettes used by the France and the Free France movement were prepared by French illustrator Edmund Dulac. His designs can be seen on denominations of 5 thru 100 Franc (Marianne), 1000 Franc (Phoenix) and the 5000 Franc (Marianne standing above Ruins). This series of designs appeared between 1941 and 1943 (although his rendition of Marianne can be seen on notes of series 1945) in various colors and under various titles including: Republique Francaise Tresor Central, Cassie Centrale de la France Libre, and Cassie Centrale de la France D’Outre-mer. These same designs can also be seen on many postage stamps used throughout France and its colonies world-wide. Examples and be seen throughout the France section of World War II Remembered or if you prefer to see color examples just take a glance at Lynn Knight’s 2002 St. Louis catalog an incredible selection of Dulac designs of various titles and containing various site specific overprints. Edmund Dulac was born in 1882 in Toulouse, France. His artistic abilities surfaced at early in his teenage years. He studied law at the University of Toulouse for two years while simultaneously attending art classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. It did not take Edmund long to discover his true passion for art and soon dropped his study of law. In 1904 he left for London, beginning a very successful career as an illustrator. Some of his most famous work includes: The Tempest (1908), The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1909), The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales (1910), Stories From Hans Andersen (1911), The Bells and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe (1912), and Princess Badoura (1913) just to name an elite few. His amazing popularity as a French artist/illustrator has placed an incredible demand on an already extremely scarce series of banknote by art connoisseurs. Dulac artwork from the World War II “Free France” movement has been observed on checks, stationary and even postage stamps. Burmese General Ne Win Passed Away by Howard A. Daniel III Here I go again with information from the Obituaries section of The Washington Post! As many of you know who collect World War II financial instruments, General Ne Win (Bright Son) was one of the thirty Burmese nationalists sent to Japan in 1940 for military training. When he returned to Burma, he became a high-ranking officer in the Burma (-Japanese) National Army. So he was there during the entire time JIM and other financial instruments were issued during the war. When the Japanese were in full retreat, he switched to the side of the Allies! By 1948, he was the second highest officer in Burma, and fourteen years later, led a coup to become number one. It became quickly apparent that the general did not have all of his nuts and bolts tightened down and he made some very irrational decisions that started Burma on a downward economic spiral. One of his most famous decisions was creating the odd banknote denominations of 15, 35, 45, 75 and 90 Kyat. This decision was partly based on his lucky number of 9, and that his astrologer had told him they would be good numbers for the economy. I know it is morbid to think about researching the Obituaries sections of your newspapers, but if you read it everyday, you will eventually find someone who might have had information and pieces of interest to you (and us). After a respectful time, please contact the family about his military (or civilian) work. You might be able to save some files and pieces from being trashed, and purchasing them might even provide his or her survivors with needed funds. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== What can I say after yesterday’s events? There is little to do except to go on. However, there are few interesting twists that connect us to the tragedy. I will not make the feeble attempts at humor that I sometimes try. Even though there were military personnel on board, I do not think that any of them served in RVN (or Korea) and used MPC. I first learned about the tragedy about four minutes after the event, when Fester Doug Bell called to tell me about it. At that moment I was exchanging instant messages with Fester/Seminarian Warner Talso. Warner lives in Albuquerque, NM. When the Challenger blew up, I was participating in training at Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuqerque, NM. Further discussion revealed that Warner also learned of the disaster while actually at the base. Finally, we have an actual space shuttle item for our collections. The MFC Series 022 and 011 $20 certificates feature vignettes of a space shuttle launch. (see page 168, 169) of the MPC book. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram A few weeks ago I finished reading a book about the USS Arizona (BB39) and it got me to thinking, amoung other things, about battleships, hull numbers and chits used on the ships. Having been in the Navy I remembered the USS New Jersey had hull number 62 and since battlships were named after states in the Union, and believing there are fifty states, it got me to do a little research. I discovered the following: There ARE only fifty states; all states except for Alaska and Hawaii have battleships named for them; not all battleships were named for states as the USS Kearsarge was battleship BB5; the highest hull number assigned to a battleship was 71 (USS Louisiana-designed but never built); more than one hull number was assigned to a number of ships, the USS Indiana, for example, was/is? BB 1, BB50 and BB58. This led me to thinking about chits that may have been used on battleships. I have heard of chits being in existence for the USS Arizona, the USS Oklahoma and the USS New York. In Gram 806 Tomn Koch advertises one from the USS Wyomimg. More research is in order, the goal being to determine if it is feasible to complete a collection of 48 chits, one from each US battleship. Any and all help that Gram subscribers can provide would be appreciated. Roger Urce Dear Gram, While trying to find hubs for an airport we stumbled onto the below site.
