From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 845 Date: Thursday, February 06, 2003 10:18 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 845 Thruski February 5, 2003 Personalities on I Bonds By Larry “Ski” Smulczenski So who exactly was Chief Joseph? It turns out that he was the leader of the Nez Perce Indians and he resisted the government's attempts to force this tribe onto a reservation. He was born in Oregon in 1840 and given a name that translated to Thunder Rolling Down the Mountain, but was known as Joseph, or Joseph the Younger because his father had been baptized by a Christian missionary. He succeeded his father as chief in 1871 and inherited a very volatile situation where the federal government attempted to force the tribe onto a small Idaho reservation, one tenth the size of their native lands. In a series of battles with U.S. soldiers, where the tribe was outnumbered by ten to one, Chief Joseph and his band of warriors finally surrendered in October, 1877. The tribe was taken to Kansas and present day Oklahoma, where they remained until 1885. The Nez Perce were allowed to return to the Pacific Northwest at that time although it was not to their original territory. Chief Joseph died in 1904. In his final years, Chief Joseph spoke eloquently of the injustice of U.S. policy toward his people and held out hope that one day freedom and equality might come for Native Americans. For his civil rights stance, Chief Joseph is pictured on the $200 I-bond. The I-bond series is made up of eight bonds that span the spectrum from $50 to $10000. The following eight people are honored on these bonds. $50 Helen Keller $75 Dr. Hector P. Garcia $100 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. $200 Chief Joseph $500 General George C. Marshall $1000 Albert Einstein $5000 Marian Anderson $10000 Spark M. Matsunaga Now we are all familiar with Keller, King, Marshall and Einstein and most of us recognize the well known opera star, Marian Anderson, but I have to admit that I was not familiar with Hector P. Garcia and Spark M. Matsunaga. So I had to look them up and pass on to you all what I learned. Hector P. Garcia was a medical doctor that spent his life working to help the poor, sick and neglected. He was born in 1914 in Mexico, but shortly thereafter, moved to Mercedes, Texas. His father insisted that he and his brothers concentrate on their education. Six of the seven Garcia children became doctors including Hector who earned a medical degree from The University of Texas in 1940. Garcia served as infantry officer in World War II before the Army finally let him practice medicine. After the war, he opened a medical practice in Corpus Christi and catered to Mexican-American vets that had fought in the war, but returned to experience inferior treatment and segregation. Garcia founded the American G.I. Forum designed to improve veteran benefits and medical attention. The Forum expanded to address a broad range of issues, including education and vocational training, housing, public education, poll taxation, voter registration, hospitalization and employment. Other veterans advocacy groups existed at the time, but few admitted Mexican-Americans and none pursued their needs, even though 500,000 had served with distinction in WWII. Dr. Garcia became the first Latino civil rights leader. For this he is remembered on the 75 dollar I-bond. Spark Matsunaga was a war hero that became a U.S. Senator from the state of Hawaii. He was born Masayuki Matsunaga on the island of Kauai in 1916. His childhood friends nicknamed him Spark and he later legally adopted that name. He graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1941, was commissioned in the Army and was serving on active duty when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December. Shortly thereafter, he and other Japanese-Americans were relieved of their duties and shipped to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. Matsunaga and other soldiers petitioned President Roosevelt for a chance to prove their loyalty. The were allowed to form the 100th Infantry Battalion, the first Japanese-American unit formed during WWII. Fifteen hundred strong they trained for combat and in September 1943, saw their first action in Italy. Matsunaga was wounded twice in the same night while moving through a minefield. He could not go back into combat but came back to the U.S. and made over 800 speeches to help the Japanese-Americans become integrated in the mainstream of American life after being released from the detention camps. His unit turned out to be one of the most decorated units of the war. In 1962 Matsunaga won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1976, he was elected to the U.S. Senate. He was instrumental in obtaining redress for Japanese-Americans that had been unjustly interned during WWII. In 1990, Matsunaga died while serving in the Senate. His image is portrayed on the $10000 I-bond. That gives you a short thumbnail sketch of some of the lesser known people that are pictured on the current I-bonds. As we said last week, these paper securities may not be around much longer. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Missing and misnumbered Grams. First, the Grams with the mismatched, repeated and otherwise messed up numbers are done that way so that future generations of military numismatics literature collectors will have the opportunity for in-depth research. They will have great fun just figuring our what Grams exist much less when they were published etc. Missing Grams are another matter. Gram 843 was an experimental Gram because it was a world record Gram for length. We were unable to send the Gram in the normal way because Yahoo would not allow. Therefore, we tried sending it as an attachment. The attachement experiment was not a great success. It was not a disaster either. Doug “Wiz” Bell has a solution for missing Grams. First, of course, if you miss Gram we want/need to hear about it. Well, possibly that is not first. If you miss Grams, you can go to papermoneyworld.net (PMW) and reenter your email address (or a new one). If that does not work, we definitely need to hear from you. Now, for missed issues, there is a solution too. Old Gram issues are posted at PMW. Generally, the posting is delayed so as not to discourage Gram subscriptions. In the case of the attachment Gram, the posting has been made. See Don’s letter below for more information. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Gram, I have a response from Tom Warburton to my column (gram 844) and I have not received any gran since 842. Where are they going? Ialso am still waiting for all the grams I asked for on 2 January, to wit: OK, where is gram 817? I am now missing four numbers, three of which (812-814) I have asked for twice. Now I notice that the gram that was numbered 811 in the subject line was numbered 812 in the masthead. If it really was 812, then I am missing 811. I am certainly missing 813, 814, and now 817. Would you PLEASE put out something clarifying what grams were actually dispatched (numbers and dates), and send the ones that are missing? You promised to "clarify" that "tomorow." Nothing ever happened. I still don't have the grams. Joe Dear Gram, Recently acquired a series 471 25c MPC position number 1 serial number B00002003B. Anybody got a lower one? Larry Gibbs Dear Larry, Did you check the MPC database at papermoneyworld.net? Did you enter your note? Did you enter your other notes? If not, you should! Editor Dear Gram, I too have been missing some recent grams, however, thanks to Doug, or whoever is doing it, the past grams listing at: http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/800-899/gram%20800-899.htm will get them for you. Sometimes they're delayed, but still eventually available.
