The design is very simple, the paper is nothing special, the significance to the war effort is minimal at best, but yet they are notes that captured my imagination early on. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/grams/800-899/marcus3.htm I first saw these pieces about four years ago in a 1997 catalog by Aleksandras Kubilas of Vilnius, Lithuania entitled “World II War Russian-German Occupations in Lithuania.” The catalog itself is fairly comprehensive and lists virtually everything including coins, bonds, medals, ration coupons, revenues, receipts and even passports. My understanding is that Mr. Kubilas had 100 copies of his catalog translated into English. While the translation is a bit crude is some spots, I believe the catalog does a fairly good job in explaining the pieces and does a great job in conveying the confusion and frustration of the Lithuanian people in being caught, quite literally, between two warring superpowers. The illustration of the notes appears on page 28, but no listing is given until page 31. The vignette contains an agricultural scene containing a pig, chicken, eggs and a haystack. The notes are bi-lingual in both German and Lithuanian. The notes are uniface and do not contain a watermark of any kind. The printing is brown on brown paper, with the serial numbers being printed in black. Not knowing either language, I immediately speculated that this was some sort of rationing note for agricultural goods. Naturally I quite surprised to find in the listing that “Papyros” are actually cigarettes. As I was just beginning to collect the textile “Punkte” notes of the Baltic States, I had made some good contacts in the region. I contacted everyone I knew trying to find examples of these notes. Although most were familiar with the listing in the catalog, no one I had corresponded with had ever actually seen the notes. I even resorted to writing a letter to Mr. Kublias, hoping that he spoke English, and could find an example for me. As it turns out, I never received a response, and was later told that he only speaks German and Lithuanian. In 2000 I again saw the notes listed in the 1999 “First Trial Catalog” by Ants Kulo and Juri Rudich entitled “World War II German Occupation of the Estonia, Lativa, Lithuania, Belarus and North Russia.” As I had already established a relationship with Juri Rudich, I asked him about the listing in his catalog. If my memory serves me correctly, he indicated that he had never seen the notes before either and used the same illustration that was in the Kubilas catalog. Indeed the notes are overlapped in the same manner with identical serial numbers. Later that year I made another contact with a Lithuanian collector who personally knew Mr. Kubilas. She was more than willing to inquire about the notes for me. Within two weeks I had in hand my first Lithuanian Cigarette note, a 10 Stucken piece. As can be seen in the picture, the note is a little damaged, possibly fading by exposure to sunlight. Within a couple of months, Mr. Kubilas had offered up to me an uncirculated example of the 40 Stucken piece. As the picture will reveal, the serial number was only one digit higher that the illustration offered in the Kulo/Rudich and Kubilas catalogs. To date I have only been able to confirm five examples of these notes as listed below: 10 Stucken 423752 424388 424901 40 Stucken 203610 203611 Surprisingly the 10 Stucken piece (424388) was unknowingly held hostage by our esteemed editor Fred. His note found its way into another prominent collection at MPCFest III last year. Obviously we still know very little about these pieces. If anyone has any further information, or have additional pieces to report please contact me at maturner@indy.rr.com. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Hello from somewhere on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. I am returning from the Strasburg Stock and Bond show where I had a great time. It was not a great show for military numismatics, but as you can imagine, I found sufficient opportunities to spend money! One dealer had cherry picked a nice MPC replacement from a shop or show ($1, yes $1!) and sold it to me for quite a few hundred! Of course, I always wish that I was the buyer at $1, but am also happy to have a chance at it at all. I also like to hear the stories. It can be and still is done! I am sending this from a credit card operated Internet station in a truck stop and having some trouble with making it work as well as fretting over the 20 cents per minute ticker! There are plenty of good letter in the mail box, but I am not certain if I can get even one into this Gram before my credit card goes dry. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Esteemed Editor, I have some good news or bad news for you. The Army (Retired) Reserve in St Louis recently contacted me (again) via email about my possible mobilization from retirement. They asked for a signed volunteer form, a signed medical information form, and an update to my background information (BI) with two fingerprint cards. The latter makes me think they are getting serious about me because they did not ask for the BI and cards when I was recalled for Operations Desert Shield & Storm in 1991. You might ask why they want a signed volunteer form. On December 31, 1990, I remember asking the Captain telling me I was being recalled what would happen if I did not sign a volunteer form. She said that if I did not sign it, she would just have to obtain an executive order for me, which she had already done for several people she had called before me. A few months ago, an old friend, who was recalled and is still on active duty, told me that the several intelligence and special operations units at Fort Bragg, NC, were severely understaffed, so I might end up in one of those units. This would allow a much younger deskbound Master Sergeant to be released for "overseas" duty. This is OK, but it would mean I would not be reassigned to my 1991 work as NCOIC of one of the 12-hour shifts for the U.S. Army Escort Detachment at Dover AFB, DE. The work at the detachment was mentally difficult, but it was very worthwhile to see that everything was done to honor our fallen men and women and to properly return them to their next of kin. I sent everything to St Louis via Express Mail on Wednesday, so my guess is that my chances of being recalled have gone from about 50% to over 75%. The bad news is that if I am recalled, I need one or more people to man the club table for NI, NBS and IBNS at the Charlotte ANA in the third week of March. And to moderate a show and tell meeting of NI and IBNS. If you or any other Gramsters are going to be there, please step forward one pace and volunteer to cover for me. When I get a couple of names via my email address of Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com, I will contact Brenda at the ANA to have your names added to the club table. That is all for now. I am working on a hundred projects right now and trying to get some of them done before I have to leave my little piece of heaven on the Chesapeake Bay. Howard A.
