From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 849 Date: Friday, February 14, 2003 11:45 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 849 Friday February 14, 2003 FRB note emission sequencing By Joe Boling Here's a story that I thought had been told in the gram, but I can find no mention of it in my two years of submissions. The subject is the Federal Reserve Bank of China. There are several parallel series that were issued nearly simultaneously from about 1943-45, but printed in different places (as deduced from differences in the serial number machines and block characteristics--some being one or two digit block numbers in angular brackets; the other being three-letter block identifiers. There are also the differences in technology (intaglio/lithography) and the similar notes printed in more than one batch even though the same basic design was retained (such as the Temple of the Sun 500 yuan blue and yellow or blue and orange). Sorting these out into a chronology (after 1938 they are undated) proved difficult for Bob Meyer (in the Toy Meyer book) and it was difficult for Schwan and Boling in our 1978 edition. Sometime in late 1983 or early 1984 a Tokyo dealer acquaintance asked me to go to a Tokyo suburb with him to another shop--a dealer I had never visited. Their object was to sell me a Sino- Japanese War (1895) 1 tael military note (PMA3). As I recall, they wanted about $4000 for it, a bargain (or at least a fair price then, and a bargain today). I had recently sold my Korean notes, and had money in hand, but I eventually decided I'd rather use it to add more notes of the early Meiji period (the ones that look like hansatsu, but are exchange company notes, the precursors to National Bank Notes). But while in the shop, the dealer showed me something else--a folder full of transmittal letters for FRB specimen notes, from the Bank of Japan to various branches in Korea and China. We already knew that FRB specimen notes were numbered within denomination (such as 3rd design 10 yuan note, 2nd design 500 yuan note, and so forth). This information came from specimen books, which showed these numbers on their covers (the story of how I acquired a large group of these specimen booklets is for another gram). But the booklets are not generally dated (once in a blue moon you find one with a rubber stamp date on the cover, but one never knows whether that is the date it was sent, received, of if the date has some other significance for that particular issue, booklet, or location). But the letters in this folder full ware all dated. These were carbon copies, but they used the same terminology as appears on the booklet covers. We thus for the first time could assign approximate issue dates to the FRB emissions. We also could see which notes formed discrete sets, because they were sent to the field together with notes of other denominations under the same transmittal letter. This allowed us to attempt to classify the notes FRB better. I have always been particularly proud of our rearranging (from the T/M and SB 1978 efforts) of the FRB notes (which Pick copied a few years later). =========================================== Editorial =========================================== It has been an amazing week. MPC news is breaking, CPMX is less than a week away and Fest IV is two weeks away. The computer has been giving me some minor problems, and the email boxes are over flowing. Top that off with untold doctor visits for Judy and I am facing the biggest time crunch in many years. However, let’s deal with first things first. Judy is just about well. She goes back to work on Tuesday (thank goodness). She has made medical history as apparently the first person on the planet to suffer pancreas inflammation for this reason. Nonetheless, she seems to be well and we thank everyone for their good wishes. I have never had two columns tacked up. Joe’s column above of course was scheduled for Tuesday, but he was late (getting it here Wed), but I (obviously) did not get it out even then. Larry’s Thurski column is here somewhere, but I cannot find it. I intended to run it today, but have to dig some more or have him resend it. Oh yes, there have been Gram delivery problems. Is there no end to the problems? Here is some good news. Ron Waddell is the 41st Fester! Possibly the 42nd reservation is hiding in the unsorted mail. We should know by tomorrow.
