From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: Gram 853 Date: Tuesday, February 18, 2003 10:38 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 853 Tuesday February 18, 2003 FRB specimen books By Joe Boling Last week I alluded to my acquisition of a quantity of Federal Reserve Bank of China specimen booklets. Most of the ones I once owned (I still have a couple or three) came to me in one group of seventeen booklets from Taiwan Rupen, in January 1984. Taiwan Rupen was an auction house operated by Ming Zing Huang for several years (approximately 1982-1986, but I'd have to go back and dig out the catalogs to make sure of the dates). He ran auctions and the occasional direct offering (I obtained my first Hankow Yokohama Specie Bank 10 yen note from him by direct purchase, the first of a hoard that I got to spend top dollar for because I was one the first collectors he approached - and I didn't even get the best condition piece in the group - I had to upgrade it later!). Anyway, in January 1984 he ran an auction with all these FRB booklets. I submitted bids on a few of the ones I wanted most, but then I also submitted a gross bid for all of the booklets, in the event that my gross bid exceeded the sum of the individual bids he received (figuring that some of the booklets would otherwise go unsold). My overall bid won, and I bought the books for an average price of $39.30 per note (some booklets contained more than one note - I priced them out per note, not per book). This was a nice windfall, but the best was when I got the books and found all those sequence numbers that I mentioned last week - 3rd 100 yuan, 4th 100 yuan, and so forth. This gave us issue information never before recorded in English (or in any of the Japanese books I ever saw). When combined with the transmittal letters that we got later, it pretty well wrapped up the issue data that we wanted for SB (well, that I wanted - Fred was never as keen as I on this kind of detail). You never know what's going to fall into your lap. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Well, several AOLers who had been missing reported receiving Gram 852. In addition, Phil Goldstein reported discussing AOL email problems with an AOL technician. He reports that there have been problems, but they are being worked on. Possibly it is solved! John Oneil reported that on MSN some copies of his Gram wound up in the bulk mail file waiting to be trashed. The migration to Chicago is underway. Leo “Paymaster” May and Larry “Ski” Smulczesnki are on the road from Florida. Kroll and Marshall are known to be on the road. The air ways will probably be full of Gramsters on Thursday and Friday. I do not know for sure when I will hit the road. Too many arms pulling at me. Fred =========================================== Mail Call =========================================== Dear Editor, Please place my name on the list for MPCFEST V. And I have pledges from two new Festers that I will firm up. JH and JB David Editor Frist Gram in quite a while. scripnot Dear Gram, I want to place a bid on the specimen note, 00000000 SN's. Is there a place on line to see it? Last night at the auction Herb and I split a large collection of Japanese hansatsu notes which I will begin listing on eBay today. Mike Dear Mike, Wow, cool. You responded to the auction listing within only a few minutes of the Gram going out. You have a good idea. We will talk to Phil about getting a few pictures in the list. Editor Dear Editor, Well, fate has intervened once again. Drama aside ... I'm not going to CPMX. Sorry I won't be able to chat with you there. Nonetheless, perhaps we can catch up at a later show. (And I've not forgotten the (approaching mythical status) questions [about MPC etc from the 2002 seminar]!) However, a number of Krause personages are attending, including our own paper money guy, Dave Kranz. Take care, and best of luck at the show! Ray Sidman Associate Editor Numismatic News Dear Ray, While we look forward to seeing David, I am disappointed that you will not be there. Memphis?
