This is going to be another short column. It's 0715 here and I haven't been to bed yet. Wednesday night is going to be an all-nighter leading into my flight to Cleveland, so I need to get some sleep today. There have been articles in the gram about SWIMS notes--those with serial numbers that read the same upside down. Distant cousins of these are notes with inverted block letters. Look again at SWIMS. The W and M are not exactly mirror images in most fonts. Similarly, the letters S and X are not exactly the same when inverted--the bottoms of the letters, in most fonts, are a little fatter or fuller than the tops. When an S is inverted, it looks peculiar. Well, that peculiarity is enough to be noticeable on NEI JIM notes, which have blocks starting with S. Look at SB2194b2 (page 616). There is no illustration, because I don't have one of those error blocks (most SI notes do NOT show the defect). I don't remember who reported this to us, but I'd expect Mike Payton to have one. Another example of inversion is the X designating replacements on Forbes-printed French AMC notes. Apparently someone at Forbes decided that an upside down X was hot stuff (I find it hard to believe that a printer would do this accidentally). Look at the illustrations of SB146r and 147r on page 280. On both pieces, the Xs are upside down; the arms at the bottom are ever-so-much closer than the arms at the top (it's easier to see in full-size pieces). As far as I know, all Forbes French replacements use this aberrant orientation. Therefore, if you see a replacement on which the Xs are NOT inverted, treat it with extreme skepticism. (and remember that the BEP replacements use small Xs, and are not subject to the observations cited here). =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Pre ForeFest has started. All three of the preFesters spent some time with Neil Shafer enroute to Fest central. They had a great time and a mini Fest of sorts in Milwaukee. Possibly the most interesting part was that Neil stated that if that visit was anything like the Fest, that he would attend the Fest in 04. Yes, Neil, the Fest is a note orgy. I am sorry to be harping on the Fest so much, but since that is what I am doing all day, the words just spil out when I get in front of the computer. Very curious about the different issues. I thought these notes were only used during the time period that the Japanese troops occupied the Philippines. I thought that once the various area/islands were liberated and occupied by allied troops, the guerilla money was discontinued. I have a couple of questions. Were there certain regions that continued printing and issuing guerilla notes in 1945? A lot of the notes I browsed thru were in mint or near mint condition. Could some party still be printing guerilla notes today via the original plates or newly fabricated plates?
