Boling at MPC Fest IV. Boling?s many contributions to the hobby were cited in the award ceremony. Boling is coauthor of World War II Remembered, the standard reference of the hobby. He has exhibited on this subject many times at local, regional, and national conventions. As most of you know, he writes a weekly column for the MPCGram. He has taught two ANA summer seminars in this area with the third coming up in a few months. He has served the larger hobby in many additional ways. He served at president of the International Bank Note Society and continues to serve as its treasurer, and advertising manager. Boling was awarded a unique silver medal that was made from the convention medal. Previous lifetime service awards were made to Elmer Smith (2001) and Larry ?Ski? Smulczenski. The Boss Honored At MPCFest IV American Numismatic Association President John Wilson recognized the efforts and services of Judy Schwan to numismatics in general and military money in particular. She was cited for tolerating the eccentric behavior of Fred Schwan. Judy is a 25 year member of the association. Jackson Barracks Military Museum by Howard A. Daniel III My Fall 2002 issue of "On Point" magazine published by The Army Historical Foundation has an article; "Jackson Barracks Military Museum" by Elizabeth Oliver (Director, Jackson Barracks Military Museum). It is a very likely source of information for my research projects of Gramsters! Jackson Barracks was created in 1832 and named after Andrew Jackson. The museum was established in 1974 by the Louisiana State Legislature and opened in 1977. Its collections include uniforms, insignia, equipment, flags, banners and historical documentation, plus many other items. It is located between St. Claude and North Claiborne Avenues in New Orleans. Which was also the location of a holding facility for WWII German POWs captured in North Africa. Located in Jackson Barracks' Area A is Building 53, which is the military history library, which includes reference and microfilm. I am sure there are many items in this library of interest to Gramsters! It is open Monday through Friday from 0800 to 1600 hours, but closed on federal and state holidays. Admission and parking are free. You can contact the museum at 504-278-8242 or email to jbmuseum@laarng.ngb.army.mil , or visit the museum's website at http://www.la.ngb.army.mil/dmh/jbmm.htm . The author of the "On Point" article about this museum and library is also the Director. I would highly recommend that you address all emails to her. Good luck and good hunting to you Gramsters living close enough to New Orleans to do some research there. I want to see several articles by you in upcoming MPC Grams about your visits and discoveries there. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== It has been another busy day in the Fest aftermath. On Sunday evning Tom Warburton described to me and a few other left overs some wisdom from years of experience. He described how it is much better to get to the airport early and lounge there instead of reading the paper at home then rushing to the airport. The wisdom of this is quite obvious. However, the wise one should know when the airplane is scheduled. This morning a few hours before I was to pick him us, I got a frantic call waking me exclaiming that the plane was two hours earlier than he had thought. Could we make it? In a frantic rush we did. Along the way at a toll both when I had trouble finding the required ticket (I offered the toll taker three different Pennsylvania Turnpike RECEIPTS). Tom opined that my car was a black hole too. At that point I stated that I thought that we should stop for a top flight breakfast. Tom immediately amended his comments to say that it was a very nice black hole! We made his flight time. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, EVERYONE, PLEASE SEND ALL PICTURES TO ME FOR POSTING ON THE WEB SITE!!! DOUG doug@papermoneyworld.net Dear Editor, I just would like to commend you and the rest of the staff for the BEST DAMND! Numismatic event that I have ever attended!!! For those that haven't attended one yet for what ever the reason? Please do yourself a favor and take the time off as soon as you know the date. I will pay your fest fees 100% if you do not agree with me that it is the best numismatic event you ever have been to! AND I MEAN IT!! It was my first fest and one that I almost didn't attend because I did not know anyone, and was apprehensive but the minute I stepped in the building I was welcomed like family and had the time of my life! I know that us MPC guys were a special breed but this puts that term in the history books as the best damned guys on the planet, when it comes to camaraderie and every fester taking a personal interest in each other isn't that what mankind is all about! I was so impressed that I will take on any assigned duty that is put on me for the next years fest (to put my share in) that is how much I believe in this event. Fred and all of the people that were in charge of this years event my hat is off to you I have put on many large conventions some with budgets of over $50 thousand dollars and over 5,000 people but they have nothing on this educational and fun event! From the moment you arrive there is this lightining bolt of excitement building and then the fun begins, even the educational presentations were fun to watch! Even though its not about individuals the fest is tops individually its the guys telling their stories of a lifetime all in one room that make you want more! And all the different characters that the fest offers! its the " Leos" the " Skis" the " Carlson's " the " Harold's" the " Al's " the "Marcus's" the " Russ's" the "Bob's " the " Joe's" the "Marv's " the " George's " the " Jack's" the "Doug's " the " Phil's" the "John's " the "Freyser's " the "Tom's " the " Bill's " the "Gary's " the "Cameron's " the " Sam's " the " Ron's" the " Wes's" the " Wilson's" the "Ed's" the Warner's" the "Tiffany's" the " Wendell's" the " Sparkey's " the "Bill's" the "" Cuneyed's " the "Steve's " the "Ian's " the " Nick's" the " Jane's" the " Louise's" the "Judy's" the "Robert's" I hope I?ve gotten all of you? And how can I ever forget these two Leading men for making it a fun fest " David Seelye" for his great donations making it exciting and interesting and the Commander himself thanks " Fred" and all of you for the greatest time I have ever seen in a numismatic event ever!~!~! if not for all of you! It would have been just another numismatic event! Thank you to all of you for the great time and the hospitality that you have showed me! I am a lifer now! see you all at the next fest! Kevin Neidy Dear Kevin, I assume that I can put your down for next year? [I have done that]. Let?s get one thing straight, I am the battalion clerk. Editor Dear Editor, Boy! I bet that was a hell of a ruckous with all of ya'll in a contest! Tell Kroll to practice up before he enters a contest! AMANDA SHEHEEN Dear Editor, With arrivals spread out over 10 hours on Friday, the afternoon events were haphazard at best. The bourse was a problem with 40 people in the room. Consider these suggestions; Arrival suggested on Thursday with events starting 10AM Friday with a 2 hour bourse. This allows time for "local drive in's to arrive. With most everyone there on Friday, the shuttle drivers would not miss out on anything. The bourse to be held in a guest room. (The one closest to the atrium would be ideal). If there are fewer than 30 expected, just cancel the room and "we" can "set up" in the room at different tables, as 2001-2. The bourse first would allow the collectors to see the for sale items, and we could lock the "security" room and not worry about watching our stock. The early bourse time would let the dealers look at the collectors dupes during the remaining time. The collectors swap, buy/sell during the whole event anyway. It would allow the collectors to see what's for sale at what price. If they don't buy from dealers or trade/buy from the other collectors at the FEST, it's easy to contact the dealers after the event. Any time any place for FEST V. Just let me know, where, and I'll be there. David Dear David, There were no scheduled events for Friday afternoon! However, you have a very good idea there. Next year we will have a bourse on Friday from noon through 7pm or so. This bourse will of course be open to Festers, but it can also be open to others who might want to come to the bourse, but might not want to stay for the Fest (although we will take registrations on the spot). This is one of the best suggestions that we have received.
