From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 864 Date: Tuesday, March 04, 2003 8:22 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 864 Tuesday (second one) March 4, 2003 Mr 691 Strikes Again All participants at MPCFest IV received souvenirs from that mysterious figure known as Mr. 691. The souvenirs are pieces of Series 691 MPC mounted on a piece of an actual crate used to ship Series 691. The unique items were gifts from Mr. 691 and greatly appreciated by all. If that was not enough, Mr 691 kept with the theme and provided a bigger version of the same item for the auction with the proceeds going to the summer seminar scholarship fund. This was a full series of 691 mounted on a board. Adding interest to the sale is the fact that it sold to Tom Kotch who was not in attendance and bid blindly because no description was available before the actual auction.. Fest Report By Joe Boling I arrived at the United counter in Cleveland Sunday afternoon ninety minutes before flight time, and was told that my flight was "tardy." But, there would still be time to make the change in Chicago to a Seattle -bound flight (the other option was to rebook right then through Denver, two hours later than the Chicago flight). The posted twenty minute delay became a forty minute delay; then we sat on the taxiway for twenty minutes being de-iced. Final departure time was 70 minutes late. I landed in Chicago at the same time my next flight was supposed to be leaving. Hoping that it was also a bit delayed (flights get late as the day wears on), I ran the half-mile between one end of concourse C and the same end of concourse B (running down escalators, up stairs, around the moving walkways that are too narrow to pass on), arriving at my outbound gate while the aircraft was still sitting there, but with the jetway retracted--FLIGHT CLOSED. Grump. Next flight 155 minutes later, but standby only; next confirmed flight (on which I had already been rebooked--the United folks ARE efficient about taking care of the victims of their delays) another two hours after that. Nothing to do but wait. The flight I was on standby for was asking for voluntary bumpees--not very encouraging about getting on. But (and even though they did use some of those bumpees), there was apparently a first class passenger who was a no show, and at the last possible minute they put me in that seat (having sent all the other standby passengers away to wait for the late flight). So, I had a pleasant trip back and got a lot of reading done, but would still have rather arrived in Seattle before 2300. The really weird circumstance was that my baggage was already here when I went to the carousel, locked to a cable on the floor in the baggage claim room. How could the bag have made the connection in Chicago when I was unable to, even by running the entire distance between gates? Beats me. I'll have to check myself through as a bag next time (but that super bug zapper they put all the bags through now might not be too pleasant). And the fest? You want to hear about that? No, I didn't think so. Well, all right, just for a minute. The auction generated a bit over $5000 for the scholarship fund; get those applications in NOW; the deadline is very near. If you don't have the format, see the papermoneyworld.net website. The total auction proceeds were over $9000 (the difference being the spread between donated lots and non-donated lots). Some interesting prices realized are (buyer's fee of 10% included): lot 22, France 1000 franc war bond SB771, $33 (cheap); lot 27, Burma 100 kyats Ba Maw (P21a), $110 (a bit low for wholesale); lot 29, Norway 2 kroner government in exile (P18a), $170 (the grade is not shown in the catalog, and I did not inspect this piece; based on the stated catalog value, I assume it was unc); lot 31, LOGEX series 560, $16 (now I know how much to ask from David Seelye for my LOGEX collection - hee, hee, hee); postcards picturing Roosevelt dam (there were several of these; after the first one went for $85.25, apparently driven by scholarship fever, they settled out around $25); lot 39, series 691 $20 female vignette, trimmed to oval shape, $77; lot 46, 50-sen ro note, unc, $110 (about right, as there is a hoard of indeterminate size someplace in China); lot 54, series 510 50c, position 39, $42.90 (that's $39 plus juice; if you don't know who collects 39s, inquire); lot 63A (set of three specimen fest bonds, denominations $40, $400, and $4000), $717.90 (many bidders chasing that lot); series 681 fractionals signed by Girard T Law, the seaman standing next to the flag on the submarine's sail, $68.20, $74.80, $110. and $110; lot 97, Ministerie van Oorlog ceramic 10c token, unsold on a minimum bid of $55 (incl fee); lot 105, three- piece set of MFC euros, all serial #1 replacements, $115.50; lot 106, BEP printing of AMC yen one- yen note, C-C block, unc, $33; lot 129, series 521 $1 with autograph of Jayne Mansfield, $154; lot 131, two Chief Ouray checks, $198 (surprised me); lot 140, series 661 10c specimen, opened at $2000 and closed at $2500 (to a mail bidder); lot 142, "Rendezvous with Destiny" MFC series 002 notes, serial #2 set (donated by Gail Baker), $1400 (the prominent collector of #2 notes let the prominent collector of #1 notes win them). The auction ran about two hours. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Wow, it looks like AOL members might now be receiving the Gram after weeks of interrupted service at best. If you are an AOL user and are receiving this Gram after such interrupted service, we would like to hear about it. We also hope that you can find a way to complain to AOL. I expect that the problem has been solved because Doug Bell just went to the trouble of isolating the AOL addresses (101 of them) so that we could try to work this out another way. As soon as he did this, the indications changed. I think AOL heard that we had a workaround and wanted to punish the iniative. (No favor goes unpunished). If you are an AOL user, you might want to consider the following to guarantee uninterrupted service: 1) the MPCgram is posted at papermonwyworld.net after a few days, 2) we highly recommend that you create a supplemental address at Yahoo, Hotmail or some other free email provider and then register that name with the Gram. As a special service to AOL victims, er users, we will send additional copies of the Gram to the supplemental addrss at no charge. If you miss the Gram for a few days at your AOL address, you can check the alternate address. Thank you for everything, and welcome back! Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, Okay, where's 862? Did the Monday edition get lost? Cheers, Sparky Dear Sparky, I just cannot put anything over on you guys! There was no 862. It was just another blatant attempt here at HQ to try to make money, but you guys always catch me. Since we have been busted, all subscriptions will be extended by not one, but two issues. Editor Dear Editor, What happened to the Gram? This is the first I've seen in weeks.
