Smulczenski Well, I finally got home yesterday (Wednesday) after 17 days on the road. I was rapidly running out of clean clothes so it was time to get home. We all had a fantastic time on our trip up north and saw many, many great notes. It was however, good to be in 70 degree temperatures instead of the zero degree temperatures that we left on Monday. But I'm not going to dwell on the weather for this Gram. I am going to retell a little tale that Harold and I related to the group at Fest since there are many of you out there that weren't fortunate enough to be present at this event. So let this be known as the tale of the box. The last time Howard Daniel was in Viet Nam, he commissioned a native painter to produce paintings of the various notes of MPC Series 692. His plan was to get these paintings to the Fest so they could be auctioned off. He had them boxed up in a package that was about four foot high, by three foot wide, by two feet thick. Howard felt he was going to take this box on the airplane as carry-on baggage. Of course he was terribly wrong as the cute little ticket agent told him that it had to be checked and that would cost him an additional $109. Try as he might, Howard wasn't able to get her to change her mind. So he paid the charges and Howard and the box were on their way to Virginia. Howard then planned to take the box to FUN and let Fred take it back to Port Clinton and hold them there until Fest. What is the line about "the best made plans of mice and men?" Yep, Judy got sick and Fred didn't make it to FUN. So the box ended up in our room (Harold's and mine) and the next thing we knew, we were loading it on Harold's truck for the trip to LA. That's Lower Alabama, for all of you who are unfamiliar with this part of the world. We experienced a little rain coming through the panhandle of Florida, but the box arrived undamaged in Mobile, Alabama. There it sat for six weeks until Harold started his trip up north to CPMX. Since I was traveling with Leo, Harold wrapped the box in some plastic to protect it from potential rain, sleet and snow and took off for Chicago. So again the box ended up sharing our room. On Friday night, Harold decided that he was going to drive over to Minnesota to visit his Dad, since he was relatively closer than he is in Alabama. That left me with the box. There was no way that I was going to get that box into Leo's vehicle as Leo travels with a lot of stuff. Fred said that his car was also loaded as he had recently bought a new printer and that box was still in the back seat. That left it up to us to somehow make room for our box. Running the passengers seat in the Buick full forward and consolidating a couple of the piles in the back seat we were able to squeeze it in there. The box was finally on its way to Port Clinton. When I checked into my room at the Holiday Inn Express in Port Clinton, I found that the box had beat me there and was taking a nap under the covers of one of the beds. Since I had arrived before Harold, I took the other bed and let him have the bed that the box was occupying. The box again shared our room until Friday afternoon, when all the Festers had arrived before we opened it. Everyone got to see the 692 paintings. They were quite good and all were sold in the auction to the same bidder. The box was saved and returned to LA stuffed with bags and baggage, a little worse for wear but still in one piece. I think Harold is going to keep it as a piece of Fest memorabilia. There have been a lot of Fest stories that have already been written in the Gram, and I'm sure there will be a number more written in the weeks to come. But did you know that one of the Festers ended up in Clinton, Ohio instead of in Port Clinton, Ohio? Seems he didn't have his navigator with him. Finally, one of the Festers left Port Clinton to visit friends in Bowling Green, Ohio. He and his wife checked into a motel and the Fester carried his luggage into the motel. Then panic! His large leather briefcase was missing. A quick call back to the Holiday Inn Express in Port Clinton, found about eight of us still there, still talking about notes along with his briefcase. Then his wife realized that she had left her jewelry locked up in the small safe provided in each room. The safe had been cleared but the jewelry was locked up in the managers safe. So the Fester had to drive the 70 miles back to Port Clinton and make a red-faced appearance at the Post-Fest prior to visiting with his friends. So that's a few more tales from the Fest. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== While we are fighting AOL, we must also fight pilot error. I seem to have sent 865 to never never land. Did anyone receive 865? Then I made things worse today by unintentionally killing the backup. Not good. I was told that the email system was having a series of problems and would be fixed by Friday (March 7). I was told in no uncertain terms that it was not a Spam problem.
