From: "Fred Schwan" To: Subject: MPCGram 872 Date: Saturday, March 15, 2003 10:15 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 872 Saturday March 14, 2003 Black Hole Attack II By Phil Goldstein So now it's Tuesday 3/4/03, I wake up, it's about 9:30 a.m, after pulling a late nighter organizing Freds MPC albums... As I've said in my last installment, I discovered that two light blue underprintings from Fred 661 Progressive Proof Set are missing.. Fred is up, in his office and working on his computer. I bid him a good morning, and proceed to tell him of my discovery of the missing underprinting. He turns around nonchalantly, and says cool as a cucumber, "it was probably not missing, just misplaced..." I sit down on the floor (remember now it's clean!) and I start showing him how I displayed each note from each denomination in it's own slot in the page. He's very impressed, and when I get to the denomination with with the missing note... he gets a puzzled look upon his face.. After a few moments of pondering, I turn the page to the next denomination, and he says, "there's your missing notes." I look carefully, and sure enough there are the two missing note... They were mistakenly placed with the wrong denomination. I (mistakenly) assumed the notes were properly sorted by denomination, just not displayed properly. That goes to show you what happens when you assume! :o) I show him the other albums, with the new sections and displays, and he comes away very impressed... He knew his albums were a wreck, just I guess he didn't have the incentive or the time to do it. I label the album spines and then put them away on a shelf. Now, after picking up all the notes that I found, which were: on the floor, jammed in several "in" baskets, stuffed in various envelopes and what have you, a pile of rather large proportions has grown on another of his tables, and it is threatening to topple over onto the floor. I decide it is time to get them put away. I start sorting the notes into basic piles: MPC, AMC, WW2 Issues, Military Exonumia (Checks, Fuel Coupons), Local Postcards, POW/Concentration Camp...you get the idea. This undertaking is by no means a small one. It takes me the better part of three hours to sort all the notes. Just when I finish it, I find another pile somewhere.. or Fred would hand me a group. While looking for all the notes I could, I came across a fairly modern two line conference phone with speaker setup, under some papers between his fax machine and wall. Since Fred uses the handset on his fax machine often, the cord on that was in a sorry state, with about 2 usable feet of stretch. I take a break from note sorting and I throw Fred out of the office for a few minutes and run a telephone line to his desk. I mount the phone upright on the vertical supports of a book shelf next to his desk, so he could work at the desk and talk at same time. He has one empty modular jack in the 3 way splitter out of his wall. I thought, "wow, thats is luck!" I plug it in, and test it. One line works the other doesn't. So much for luck. I try switching handset cords but that don't work either. Fred says thats peculiar, cause it worked when he disconnected it. I try one more thing: I take the 3 way splitter out of the wall and plug the phone directly into the wall jack. Bingo! Two lines... The splitter, while being three way, has a single two line split and two single line splits. So I swap the fax machine into a single line and plug the desk phone into the two line slot. A few minutes later the fax machine rings. It's hooked up to Judy number! That won't do Fred says! So I tell him, tomorrow I need to go to a Radio Shack and get the proper splitter, and while there, I'll get two new handset cords. So now, it two hours later and we go out for lunch and stop by his brother Brad who owns Swan Dry Cleaners of Port Clinton to pick up my dry cleaning. Yes MPCGram readers: I save up all my dry cleaning all year long and bring it with me to the Fest so Brad can do the cleaning. It saves me a 40 minute trip to my nearest dry cleaners where I live, not to mention (and perhaps more importantly) Brad accepts MPC Fest Certificates as payment!! I think he is the first business establishment in Port Clinton (or any business establishment anywhere) to honor an issue of paper money not of US legal tender.. LOL! While there we schmooze the daily shenanigans on the stock markets, and then head to Leo at the Holiday Inn.. Then we head to a quaint coffee house for a cuppa, and an informal and inpromptu chess meet with Cuneyd. (That's pronouced "June-Eight" for those of you who don't know him) Judy meets us there and we have a light dinner there. She tells us she has Wednesday off and Fred sighs. It's after 7 pm, and we get home, I'm back in his office, and back at work. Finally all notes are put into some sort of container. While I could stop there, I cannot. I have "look for" lists from various people, who have notes missing in action in the Black Hole. I find a couple, but the really important ones elude me. This takes and hour or so. I then start sorting all the MPC notes in this 5 x 8 box I've assembled, by series and denomination.. I take out all the replacements and put them in a seperate 5 x 8 sleeve. Fred mentions something about removing all the obsolete computer equipment and putting them in storage. We pile all that up in a corner of the office, and box up all the miscellaneous cables. Then it's bed time for Fred and he excuses himself. I continue working on the notes and progress to the AMC boxes and seperate by country of issue. Then, my eyes start getting heavy... I decide to turn in, and I doze off and my dreams are filled with MPC and AMC notes. Next Installment : Wednesday 3/5/03 - The great computer move! =========================================== Editorial =========================================== I guess I just make too good of a target. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor: Just a comment on the Propaganda leaflets. A friend of mine has been on two different tours in the Afgan area and he has sent me a total of 16 different leaflets, so far. Don't know what they say or mean, but they are interesting anyway. Moe Letlow To all Festers, Due to an oversight, I did not get a listing of everyone's email address so I could bug you about sending a serial & position number listing of all your Fest Certificates including 031. I think I spent too much time looking for 7's. Anyway, please send reports to thetrader.2@cox.net . Thanks Al Phil: On the cleaning of the black hole, you did great, but forgot one thing. When Fred goes to the post office, he sometimes makes a stop at the warehouse (black hole #2), and also when he gets home, he puts the car in the black hole #3 ( the garage). Did you think to check for mail left unattended in #2 and #3. Looks like you may need another trip of two or three days for that project. You may need three or more days just for #2!! Looking further along, you might have check his other living quarters (his car).
