From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 874 Date: Sunday, March 16, 2003 7:56 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 874 Sunday March 16, 2003 FEST AUCTION By Harold Kroll Results of the auction held at MPC Fest IV were great, actually phenomenal with $5,000.00 being raised for the scholarship fund. Thanks to all that donated items and to all the bidders, without either this would not have been possible. This leads into some comments and thoughts concerning how the auction was run. I attend about 5 paper money auctions a year, bid in several mailbids sales and attend 12 to 15 auctions a year for my business. There are several general guidelines that makes an auction work smoothly and they are understood by the bidders without much fanfare. The auction is run by the auctioneer, he may or may not have other people working with him to watch the crowd and be sure to get each bidders bid as he/she raises their hand or bid card. This is sometimes called watching the ring. If for some reason the auctioneer misses a bid and calls the item sold and one of the ring watchers has taken a bid from another bidder, the auctioneer can make one of two calls, he can reopen the bid between his bidder and the ring watchers bidder only or he can reopen the auction to the floor. In the case of a late or slow bid when a bidder decides to raise his/her bid card or hand when the auctioneer is saying sold, the usual sold call stands and the bidder is reminded to get the hand or bid card in the air so it can be seen. More lots have been lost from bidders who hesitate when bidding and this is where some bidders get upset, I have been guilty of this myself. If you are bidding in an auction, always raise your hand or bid card high in the air so it can be seen by the auctioneer or the ring people. If you have doubts about what you are bidding on or the bid being asked for you can ask the auctioneer to clarify bid or item. If you bid on the wrong item do not wait for several lots to be auctioned off before bringing this to the attention of the auctioneer, in most cases if you wait to do so you own the item. The auctioneer is sometimes referred to as the judge as he has the last word concerning every item being sold. This holds true when it comes to all preprinted catalogs and literature mailed out advertising the sale. Any corrections, deletions and changes take president as announced by the auctioneer prior to sale starting over anything advertised previous to sale time. The auctioneer is working for the seller and his main concern is to get the most he can from the bidders in the auction for each and every item he is selling. It is also his responsibility to make sure all bidders understand the rules of the auction as explained prior to sale start time. Last but not least, all bidders should know and understand the rules if they are going to participate in any auction. This brings up the confusion about bidders having lots resold at the auction. While several of us were at the ANA Summer Seminar two years ago we also attended the YN auction and saw something that we thought was a terrific way to help the YN'S raise more money. A high bidder would win a lot and the tell the auctioneer to resell the item, stating wrong lot bid on or whatever, the auctioneer would bid off the lot again, this item may be bought and sold several times before one bidder finally keeps the lot. What was misunderstood at the fest auction was that each time a bidder won a lot and told the auctioneer to resell the item, the high bidder each time the lot was resold also paid for the item, so one lot would bring in several bids making more money for the YN'S. A few of us did this at the fest auction to raise the dollars for the scholarship fund and it was not explained enough for all to understand what was taking place. I do not think any lot was returned except for this reason and in most cases after the lot had been sold several times it would be given to a YN at the auction or fest. Overall the auction was a big success and it accomplished the goal we were all after, funds to promote this area of collecting. The auction ran less than two hours, but we have to look beyond just the auction by itself. Larry Smulczenski and Phil Goldstein were the coordinators of the auction and they need to be applauded for their great work involved in setting the whole thing up. This auction did not just come together overnight, calls for donations were sent out in the fall of 2002 to get this thing rolling. That was the easy part, but after that the donated items begin to arrive and they come in all kinds of fashions, single pieces, groups, mixed lots, etc, now the hard part starts. When Larry was at the FUN show in Orlando he received quite a lage amount of items for the auction, the donations were great but all this had to be sorted out, identified, labeled and readied for listing in the catalog. I don't know how many hours or evenings he spent getting all the material ready for this auction but it involved a lot of both. He was still working on this while at the CPMX show in Chicago a week before the fest. Phil was putting the auction lots on the website as they were finished and there was a lot of discussion between the two of them on getting these lots put together. Larry served as the auctioneer for the auction and Phil had the easy part, recording all the bids and bidders, collecting all the money and disbursing payments to the sellers, just kidding Phil. Both did a FANTASTIC job, and the results speak for themselves. Congrats to both of you. The auction had a purpose and it was accomplished but in the same vain it was supposed to be a fun thing. If some feelings were ruffled or thoughts of losing a lot stung a little, who was really at fault. Did you as a bidder do your best to get the auctioneers attention, or did you have that last micro second urge to bid as the item was being sold and missed out. There are times when a bid gets overlooked and it is not done intentionally, it just happens. From the observations of attending the auction it was run close to the above mentioned procedures and would be glad to attend another one in the future. I know there will be some rebuttal to this article but that will be good for future use while attending any auction To use a phrase from "Mr. Get A Life" ANYTIME-ANYWHERE. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Marcus Turner went to the coin show of the Indianapolis Coin Club today. His column will appear tomorrow. Of course I agree with most if not all that Harold has to say. There have been a few comments directed at the letter writer who complained about the auction and about my decision to run it. Even the letter writer stated that he whished that he had not sent it. Here is where I disagree. I thought that the letter was good. If someone has a complaint it is much better to air it in the hope/expectation of resolving it than carrying it around. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor: I read your extremely short editorial in Gram 872. Of course you make a good target.. Do you think you would be such a good target if you were normal? Which of course there are no normal MPC collectors.. Phil Dear Phil, Yes, I think that was the record for short editorials. Sometimes I balance that with the longest response to a letter?but not this time. Editor Dear Esteemed Editor, It was amazing this morning to see an MPCGram in my "Inbox"! MSN has always properly sent it to my "Junk" mail slot. Did you change some code in the email to make the MPCGrams seem like "normal" email? Phil's work in and around you is fantastic! Can I hire him too? My office, library, dining room table, breakfast bar and several other places are also covered with mail and stacks of other stuff for him to work on. There are some "military" Southeast Asian pieces in the mess but nothing like the number in your stuff, so he might not be interested. I have sent about ten inputs to you for the MPCGram in the past month that have not appeared in it. Are they still in your "Inbox" or do I need to resend them? And the last item is that it appears the Army does not want me (yet) and I will be at the Charlotte ANA. The NI meeting is at 11AM and the IBNS meeting is at noon on Saturday for all of the Gramsters who can make them. Please bring one or more items for show and tell! See you in Charlotte! I hope. Howard Dear Editor, Loved the story on the auction checks. Banks simply have no sense of humor. Making the checks payable in Military Fest Certificates was a stroke of genius. I can just see the VPs (everyone in a bank is a VP) scurrying about trying to decode the secret terrorist message. The article on Joe Boling, the Play, was outstanding. I would make a real effort to see it. To tell you the truth, what would really stir me to action is "Joe Boling on Fred Schwan" W =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== March 21, deadline for application for ANA Summer Seminar military money scholarship, see: http://www.papermoneyworld.net/news/Military%20Numismatists%20Scholarship%20Fund%202003.pdf ANA National Money Show, March 21-23, 2003, Charlotte (NC) Convention Center, Contact ANA Convention Department at convention@money.org or JoeBoling@aol.com for forms to exhibit.
