From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 879 Date: Sunday, March 23, 2003 4:13 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 879 Sunday March 23, 2003 Series 691 and 701 to Destruction? Destruction of MPC Series 691 and 701 has been going on at Anniston Arsenal, Anniston, Alabama for a few weeks or months. This information became available to collectors when news reports to this effect appeared in the local Anniston news paper and on CNN television. Since the destruction became public knowledge, a controversy has developed about the desirability of the destruction. Unconfirmed and very recent reports indicate that the destruction has stopped, but this is unconfirmed and no additional information about final disposition are available. The remainder of this Gram is basically a discussion of this matter. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Basically the above story about the destruction of MPC Series 691 and 701 appears in the April special MPC issue of the Bank Note Reporter. I first learned of the destruction a few weeks before the Fest when Gramsters forwarded comments about the newspaper and CNN stories to the Gram. Of course I was interested. I talked to one other collector who had also been notified because of the story in the Anniston paper. I knew that I should do two things about this news: 1) I should peruse finding additional information about the reports, and 2) I should write a story about it for the Gram. Basically, I did neither. It was a critical time for me. Judy had just finished two months of illness; CPMX and MPCFest were bearing down on me. The items that I had received were not suitable for cutting and placing in the Gram as news. In order to do it right, I had to do some work. Even if I had the facts (which I did not), I would have to spend some real time working on the story so I procrastinated. After the Fest, two interesting things happened. I had to rush to prepare items for publication in the first ever special MPC issue of the Bank Note Reporter. I was contacted by government employees about the matter of the 691s and 701s being held and potentially destroyed. It seemed to me that it was reasonable and appropriate to run this news item in the Bank Note Reporter rather than first in the Gram because of the very special timing of the first ever MPC issue. I also felt, that for the first time I had something to report that was not better known and reported by other collectors. My decisions seem to have created a firestorm of criticism directed at me. The criticism seems to be based upon two things. The first is that I could or should have made a report in the Gram (or at the Fest) about this. Guilty. I hope that the above discussion helps explain that. I also need to point out that other collectors who knew more than I about this elected not to write anything for the Gram about it. The other criticism seems to be that my position that the notes should not be destroyed is wrong and is to the detriment of the hobby. This criticism is much harder for me to understand. I do understand that those of us (self included), who have sets probably believe that it is in our financial best interests to have the balance of government stocks destroyed. That I can and do understand even though I do not completely agree with it. There are many reasons that I would like to see the destructions stopped and the notes saved. I would like to verify the sheet layout of the second printing high values. I would like to track the serial numbers of replacements in bundles (in relation to the adjacent regular issues). I would like to study the packaging verifying the statements that Marcus Turner has made about this aspect. I look forward to reconstructing sheets (at least trying to). I would like to learn the answers to questions that I did not know that I had! Yes, I would like to see (and possibly own) errors, replacements, low numbers, matched sets, crates, boxes labels and other things. I can guarantee that release of the stocks will not wreck the MPC hobby. I guarantee it. The release may well change the hobby, but it will not wreck it. Collectors who have sets now probably will lose some value (although this is uncertain since we do not know just what is in the hoard). On the other hand, these same collectors probably would have the opportunity to see, own and enjoy many additional notes. They probably could own entire boxes of notes and give them away to interested parties. The notes might wind up being given away as premiums to millions of people who attend a movie about Vietnam. Heck, these that are given away might be overprinted with advertising about the movie and become collectable items in the decades ahead. Millions of notes might be distributed to schools as part of a history curriculum. We might be able to build a bunker out of MPC boxes in a Vietnam (Korea) reenactment. Yes, notes would become very common (cheap). That is the nature of hoards. Other consequences are far less certain. I hope that one of the consequences is a lively discussion here in the Gram. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor Let's Talk About Series 701..... It Is My Understanding That There Are...'Bout 63 Million Notes. (originally 70 million) Awaiting Destruction.......Ordered By The US Government. Sent From Oklahoma. This Was Known At Fest #4 .....But Not Revealed.. It Is Also My Understanding That You....Have Played An Instrumental Part...In Stopping The Destruction Of These Notes. ISTRONGLY Believe That This Is Information That Should Be Shared With The MPC Community............Why Has This Not Been Done Yet.........???? What Is The Gram For.......???? Why Are Allot Of Collectors Upset At You........???? Fred........... Above All............Open It Up.........Share It........Allow Opinions... Why Keep Secrets.........It's Gonna Get Out.......!! Respect, Ed Beaman Hello Ed, Thanks for writing. By now you know that this issue of the Gram centers on the matter of 691 and 701 destruction. Here is an interesting twist. Your statement about 63 vs 70 million notes was not known to me until your letter. It seems to me that someone else was withholding that information!
