From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 881 Date: Tuesday, March 25, 2003 9:30 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 881 Tuesday March 25, 2003 The U.S. Cavalry Museum By Howard A. Daniel III Edward A. Mueller reviewed ?The Fort Riley Sesquicentennial 2003 Calendar? in the December 2002 issue of the Army magazine, which is published by the Association of the U.S. Army. The ?calendar? is a history of the Fort with 30 pages in it, so it more a booklet than a calendar. I was speed reading through the review and expected to go through it without stopping, but my eyes caught ?payroll?. The sentence is ??.the fact that the first set of officers? quarters at Fort Riley (1855) had built-in payroll safes.? But the review had something worthwhile for Gramsters because I think the U.S. Cavalry Museum at the fort probably has some information and pieces of interest to them at it. Who lives near Fort Riley and can see what they have there? The museum is sponsored by the U.S. Cavalry Association and you can reach them at P.O. Box 2325 , For Riley, KS 66442-0325; 785-784-5797; or www.uscavalry.org to make an appointment. The calendars are $14.95 plus $3.00 if you want one, but you will have to contact LJack@networksplus.net (Jack Lowell) for it. Report on Charlotte By Joe Boling As usual, there were precious few world paper dealers at the Charlotte ANA event, and one of the ones who did come seemed not to be interested in selling what he had (apparently he thought had bigger fish to fry, though I never saw anyone who came to his table getting any attention from him--then he pulled out Saturday night, after telling me to come back Sunday (the third time he had put me off). Leo May was prominent on the corner just before the food concessions--all he had to do was keep people from spilling their drinks all over his stock as they returned with their food and stopped to kibitz. Although he hailed me several times to show me one treasure after another, all I bought from him was a Series 1943 AMC 2-lire note with serial number A33888888A--for a pittance of $4. Elsewhere on the floor I spent over $1500 for items to go into my specialty collection, only one of which was a matching piece for one already owned (a Confederate $100 of 1861). Absent were Lyn Knight, Mel Steinberg, David Seelye, CAA (though Len Glazer was at the Heritage table, I did not see any notes), Lowell Horwedel, Len Harsel, Bill Henderson, Leon Thornton, Jim Warmus, and many others whom we habitually see at paper money shows. Present were Tom Denly, Harry Jones, Dave Berg, River Hollow, the Kagins, and a few others with primarily US paper (Denly still has a good stock of world). Howard Daniel was holding court on the club midway, which was before one entered the bourse, so it was easy to steer novices to him or to John Parker at the SPMC/SCCS table to have their paper offerings looked over before directing them to an appropriate dealer on the floor. Ditto for any world coins. Quite a few "general public" walked up to the exhibit chairman or me, tabulating scores nearby as chief judge, to inquire about where they might take their little hoards and groupings. Howard ran meetings of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society (the best-attended of his three meetings), Numismatics International, and the IBNS (the least well-attended meeting, with a total of four). I could not attend any of these because I was tied up as chief judge all day Saturday. There were 38 competitive exhibits from 29 exhibitors, more than double the loads for the previous conventions with competition (those numbers were 10/10 and 17/11 in 2001 and 2002). None of the winning exhibits was a paper money display, though one got a lot of laughs. John Parker had not printed out his text and labels before coming to the show, bringing instead a portable printer of some sort. It choked on the paper he was feeding it and froze up, leaving him with 1.5 pages of text (the last badly mishandled by the printer), and no captions. Kinko's was unable to read his file. He hand-lettered a brief explanation and placed it with the floppy disc containing his exhibit into his last case. The exhibit was a stunner, consisting of security printer advertising materials showing their capabilities. He promises to have it in better condition for Memphis. Word of warning to exhibitors--label your copies. All it takes is a one-line sentence saying that the backs of the notes shown are photocopies, or that the notes in cases x and y are replicas, or some such wording, to avoid being disqualified. I had only one apprentice taking the judge's certification program, so I was able to see three plays while there. Two were within walking distance and the third was at a college twenty miles north of town, for which Howard Daniel graciously loaned his Honda CRV (even though I chided him for buying it a few years ago, because Consumer Reports had found some objectionable handling characteristics during their testing). I did not have the impression that it was a busy show. ANA says 5000 people came (but they also claimed 700 dealers--they must be counting every sub-sub-junior table hack that the big boys brought- -most of the tables I visited did not have even a second person for coverage). Next spring is Portland--y'all come. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== When the talk about the 691/701 hoard started, I had a bunch topics for discussion here. I even had written some or possibly all of them down, but now (of course), I cannot find the list. Oh well. I saw Olier North (of Contra fame) on cable a few nights ago. The talked about short snorters even though he did not use the term. He was (is I assume) in Iraq. He described the leaflet campaign then mentioned that some troopers had asked him to autograph some of the leaflets. Sounds like a short snorter to me. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, I have a friend that works at Anniston Army Depot. emailed him tonight to find out any info that he is able to divulge. Will let you know Steve Payne Dear Steve, Thanks. We look forward to any news. Editor Dear Fred & Gramsters, I've been in this hobby for way too long now and I can tell a few stories myself of paying deeply for certain items for my various collections over the years that can be bought for peanuts now - which I do buy when I can add interesting varieties to those original "treasure chest" items. This is offset by other purchases I have made that have increased considerably in value over the past few decades. It all comes down to fate, part of being a serious collector and not knowing in the least what will happen in our uncontroled marketplace tomorrow. I always refer to it as an educational experience, sometimes rather costly indeed. Cheers, Colin P.S. 4 grams received since just past noon yesterday. Dear Colin, No charge for the extra Grams. Editor Dear Editor, I bought some stock in some tech companies. Everything was going OK until you started mucking around with your computer. This came to a head over the weekend when you violated the trust of so many other computer users. This morning the stock market crashed and I lost a ton of money on my tech stocks. What are you going to do about this? A collector Dear Gram, My take on these two unissued "issues" have always been somewhat suspicious. At Memphis a couple years ago right after their "release" a collector (Dealer?) showed me a 691 $20.00 note, AND a Replacement note with matching Serial Numbers, except, of course, the replacement lacked the suffix "D". Right then I knew some had access to a huge quantity of these notes to be able to put together such a set. Also initially I thought that all these notes would be confiscated. I was wrong and I think that says something about the government's lack of concern and the deterioation of the government. Think about it. If this would have happened 20, 30 years ago the Secret Service, FBI, the Pentagon, would be doing some serious investigating. And now for them to sell off more "legally" is, in my opinion, a sad state of affairs. The Mint and BEP are now in business selling collectibles that should never be. What would you think if they reprinted all the back issues of MPC and sold them to collectors. Just like when the Buffalo Dollars were sold out a couple years ago they were considering re-issuing them until a huge clamor erupted amongst the dealers and collecting community, and they decided not to. I have been anti-Mint and anti-BEP for many years now. When they started setting up at shows selling everything from bags to coin jewelry I knew things were getting out of hand. What the hell is the mint doing selling coin jewelry and competing with free enterprise? Ever wonder how much it costs to send all those employees from the Mint or BEP to attend a major show, hotels, food, transportation? Hell I do not care how much they sell, I guarantee that they do not turn a profit after it's all over with. But, hey, the government can operate like that, they do not have to show a profit like a real business does. Back to confiscation: How can a company paid to destroy government property (yes, even very sensitive material) get away with losing control and have these original notes being sold to the collector's market. And it does NOT impress me one iota that the proceeds all went to the USO or Red Cross. How many more is this individual sitting on? Over the last couple years since their "release" I have on several occasions obtained these notes in trade from individuals close to Mr. 691. What kind of deal is that? Am I mad that these notes are out? No, not really, as I think they are really beautiful, but that does not change my mind about how they got out or that they should have been confiscated. Was it a good thing for MPC? Who knows, but it certainly upped the ante for completing a set of MPC. Mike Cummings Hello Gramsters! I can't believe me eyes and ears! Why would anyone want to save "millions / 60+-!!!!!millions!!" of notes, so the few dozen of collectors who couldn't afford them or didn't or wouldn't take the opportunity to buy them can have them for FREE! That's not right!!!! We were led to believe that these notes were on the chopping block!!!!!!!! OTHERWISE NO ONE WOULD have spent $2000 originally, per set, or over $4000 on the secondary market! AND then the remainder sold to hundreds (the extra #691 $1, and $20!) of NEW collectors. The whole IDEA was to keep them a somewhat a SCARCE COLLECTABLE! AND NOT FREE TOILET PAPER! Even if 10,000 notes were saved, that would totally, destroy the FAITH I once had in future offerings because of so many LIES! This MPC collecting community is just a few hundred strong!! NO one else gives a "hoot" about MPC or saving them!! NOBODY! except some junk box stuffers! Stop this madness now! And VOTE for destruction or at least a minimum/ maximum of no more than a few thousand sets, "PUNCH CANCELED" to be sold with funds being donated to the RED CROSS or the U.S.O.! AS originally planned!! Don't destroy the faith and pocket books of "our MPC community! WHO DOES THIS SERVE! and APPEASE?? WHO???!!! The "jealous", or cheap , who can't stand it that they don't have any thing invested in this and this is there FREE TICKET!!! BULL! Do the right thing!!! AND GET REAL! PROTECT OUR INVESTEMENT , this also could bring the whole MPC market into a tail spin as a result of this! Guy M. Araby 40 years of experience in this business!! =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== Masstricht April 4-6, Valkenburg, The Netherlands, contact Jos Eijsermans, Box 3240, NL 5930 Tegelen Netherlands May 30 ?
