From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 883 Date: Wednesday, March 26, 2003 11:44 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 883 Thursday March 27, 2003 First Distribution of 691/701 By David Seelye In reply to Larry Gibbs' letter about a "select few," I beg to differ. When I heard about the availability of the sets they were specifically available to collectors. Dealers were specifically not invited to purchase sets. I sent the letter below to all on my mailing list. I have some feedback that several collectors took advantage of this opportunity based upon my letter. Certainly, conditions have changed, but a large part of the community had a chance at the notes. Dear Collector, I am sending this letter to my MPC mailing list advising them of an opportunity to add to their collection. This is literally a once in a life-time deal. If you have read the June issue of Bank Note Reporter and the article by Marcus Turner starting on page 26, you know what I am talking about. For those of you who haven't read the article, you should go to the local coin shop and buy the issue. The article deals with the information about the two series previously shrouded in mystery series 691 and 701. I'll not say more, the lengthy article is a gem. What is not stated in the article is that a total of 50 sets of notes will be made available to collectors at a cost of $2000.00. A set being 8 notes; 691 $1.00, $5.00, $10.00, $20.00; 701 $1.00, $5.00, $10.00, $20.00. To order a set you should call Doug Bell at xxx-xxx-xxxx to reserve your set. Then send him a cashier check or a postal money order made out to either the RED CROSS or USO. That's right! The "Deep Throat" wants the money to go to charities that help servicemen! If you need a payment plan, call Doug and ask. I suggest that you call ASAP. I cannot stress enough the importance of this. There are a few 691 $1.00 and 691 $20.00 that are "extras." What their fate, cost etc., at this time I don't know. These are the facts as I know them today. This letter is written as a service to you, my customer. I wanted to make sure that you knew of this now, not in 3-4 weeks, when it was too late to act. Any questions? Just give me a phone call, and I'll be happy to talk with you about these events. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== My April Bank Note Reporter?the first ever special MPC issue?finally arrived. We did not get much in the way of front cover coverage, but we sure did get lots of space. From memory let me see if I can remember the MPC items: 1. long letter from Carlson Chambliss analysizing MPC values. 2. 2. wonderful article by Marcus Turner introducing MPC collecting 3. article by me on the Fest with side bar stories on Boling receiving the MPC life time achievement award and Marcus Turner winning the national MPC collector championship 4. article by Pete Huntoon on the use of the Mt. Ranier vignette 5. article by Carlson Chambliss on Hawaii and North Africa notes 6. story by Schwan on the Mericle sale 7. substantial advertising. 8. ah yes, I nearly forgot the controversial story onf 691/701 destruction. I would say that this is quite a wonderful issue and a good first attempt at an MPC issue. I am already looking forward to next year. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor: I think David Klinger's finding of the internal memorandum from the General Counsel, Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), dated 15 July 1996, was great. Having some experience with DOD surplus property disposal, I found the process outlined to be quite logical. What caught my eye was the last paragraph noting that "the regulations governing MPCs require that at least two reserve MPC series be maintained ....."In my research of the regulatory basis of MPC I have repeatedly asked this question and have received no answer to date. W Dear Editor, I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Hunter! If there is anyone out there who can't relate a story about getting in early and getting burnt it's because they just fell off the turnip truck! The 1996 memo says it all, now how to get it implemented? Jack Glass Dear Editor, Re: 691/701 notes.... Funny, I had just sent a letter to the MPC Gram thanking all the Dealers for helping me achieve my complete collection of MPC's. All this in good faith, based on the fact that the 691/701 notes were all being destroyed and only 50 sets were being saved and sold. I have invested a lot of money on the 691/701 notes and now you are telling me they soon will be worthless. I'm not very happy about this at all. I also spent a lot of money on the 651 Fractional set. Next you will tell me there is a hoard on them and soon they also will be worthless. So now my financial investment for my kids and grand-kids are now worthless -- Thanks a lot. I'm not a very happy gramster. I have lost a lot of respect for MPC Dealers who just wanted to make a lot of money from us little guys. Fred, you got to help do something about this. Help have the balance of the 691/701 stock destroyed . Don't wreck this hobby for us. Think of the loyal little investors.
