From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 889 (a few hours late, sorry) Date: Thursday, April 03, 2003 12:03 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 889 Wednesday April 2, 2003 New reports By Joe Boling I have recently begun email correspondence with an Israeli collector in Beijing. He is obtaining some interesting material. I believe I mentioned before that the locally printed Manchukuo 100 yuan note (SB79) is starting to show up (not the fakes, but originals). Now some printer's waste is also appearing, and some doctored printer's waste. An example with TWO serial numbers (same as the earlier Japanese-printed version) appears to be intended to circulate or to fool collectors; there should be only one serial number, at the top. Another example has two notes joined, incompletely printed. Beware of paying high prices for examples of this note, especially if they appear to be error notes. Another item he came up with is a 1945 note from Meng Chiang payable in Central Bank of Manchou notes. It's hard to know what this was created for, and why CBM currency were specified, rather than Meng Chiang notes. He has been offered a ten-yen ro note. Until recently that denomination remained scarce; this is the second I am aware of in a few months (one UNC, this one fine). An interesting British YMCA (Shanghai) chit (same shape as US chits, but I don't know the dimensions) says This Coupon Good For / 1 / One Cent / in Trade / at British / Forces / Y.M.C.A. / Great Western Rd / Hut / Jessfield Park / Hut / Shanghai. Brown on brown. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== April Fool, yes, the news story about the end of the Gram (and all of the other enterprises), the editorial about the same and most everything in Gram 888 was a spoof. Certainly the stories about the hoards were also jokes. I do not think that there was anything serious. I just reviews Gram 888. The only non jokes above the calendar were the letters from H and Len H and the answers thereto. Overall, the jokes were received in the good spirit that they were created. The phone rang within five minutes of 888 hitting the mail. A few others called, many wrote. Most wanted to confirm that it was an April Fools joke. A few were taken in completely. I feel a little guilty about this last group, but as I said above even most of those have taken it well when they learned that they had been duped. By far the best news from my point of view is that we have some great letters to share. Those have started today and will continue at least through tomorrow. For those who were fooled, we will withhold all indications of name, but we are glad that you wrote. Frankly, it was heartwarming to read many of the letters. Thank you. Doug Bell points out that one of the links to the fantasy notes had a typo. We had it as http://www.papermonworld.net/541.jpg when it obviously should be www.papermoneyworld.net/541.jpg. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Esteemed Editor, I am from the old, old school that every numismatic piece should be saved for future numismatists to own, so I would very much like to see the 691 and 701 pieces saved from destruction, whether they are in my collection or not. There is a similar experience coming up for Vietnamese paper money collectors. My Democratic Republic of Viet Nam Coins and Currency book has a Pick-unlisted 1969-dated 20 Dong note that was known to be unique at the time my book was published in 1995. Last year when I was in Viet Nam, another one was offered to me for over $1000. I said I wanted to think about it. Within two or three days, two others were offered to me. When I asked for the block and serial of each note, I determined that a brick of at least one thousand pieces was the source for all of them. There was and is a chance that the Vietnamese national bank and/or Ministry of Finance will close down the leak of this note and burn them like they did with the Pick-4A and 37A notes for the Republic of Viet Nam after 1975, but I have a feeling that they will allow them to keep coming out. So I told my sources, and other collectors I knew to be interested in them, that I would buy the first one offered to me under $200. I have seen this note selling for $500. to $1000. each, but lately, I have seen a few being offered on eBay starting at $150.00 with the source in Viet Nam. So far, all of them have been bid up to over $250., but as more and more come out, they will eventually sell down to double digits each. I will still honor my word to buy the first one offered to me for under $200., and fully expect it to fall to a double digit value, but I have bought many other pieces for double digit values that are now worth three and even four digit values. But if they all went to junkbox values, that would still be alright for me, because I am not collecting them for their retail value, but for their historical value and the pleasure of owning a piece of history. Howard A. Daniel III Hello gramsters! Why can't everyone be happy????? There were 50+ sets sold through proper channels! The money was directed to the Red Cross, or U.S.O.! $2000 a set and some singles! This was decided so that they WOULD BE SCARCE and DESIRABLE! That was the FINANCIAL reason everyone bought them along with filling out there collection. NOW someone wants to stop destruction!! Knew this?!!! Has $6000 invested???? WHY?? for selfish reasons?? To get some "errors" or build houses out of "empty crates"?? Hand them to "school children?" to drop on the streets!!!!! Get real! A Sham!!!!!!!! If this is truly and educational venture!!! I'm sure Fred could get permission to take down all the information "needed?" he so desperately wants, by OVERSEEING there destruction! Wow! He could answer all those important questions Phil stated! And if it is "saving them" that is so important, THEN save all you want .....CANCELED! (I suggest 1,000-10,000 CANCELED sets) and sell them at $29 each! MONEY going to RED CROSS or U.S.O.! THIS SATISFIES everyone who wants them!!!!!! AND PROTECTS EVERYONE who already owns them and went through proper channels originaly and "ethically." I invested $20,000( 1st and 2nd printings + replacements, etc.) not $6,000! I am building 3+ sets for my children, grandchildren and my retirement! PAID RETAIL/ $4000+ per!! WHY destroy the "fellow MPC collectors financial investments" when you can stop it and SAVE THEM???????????????? No excuses! If all you want is to save them (MPC), then SAVE A FEW!! "CANCEL THEM"!!! The money doesn't line anyone's pocket but the "Red Cross or U.S.O." Everyone wins, no one gets hurt! And the "RARE" sets STAY RARE! The after market on the canceled sets would be FUN! DON'T ruin it for us and those new collectors on "ebay" right NOW who are bidding on them!!!!!!!! PLEASE! RECONSIDER the fate or our hobby! Guy Araby! Hello Gramsters and Fred!...... If this is an April fool's Joke!! You Got me!! Just like "AL" did! But if it isn't a joke...........I can't believe me eyes! WE love you Fred! You are the reason we all have the tools and books, for collecting MPC.... the Guru! WE held you to a "higher standard" than the average "coin hustler" dealer/ mentality. Everyone wants /and has seen dollar signs whenever we can! We all want to make a buck! Honestly, you are really hurting the ones who love you! YOU can change it all with a RE-consideration! destruction, overseeing it, perhaps a ligitimate way to withdraw a few sets for sale or educational purposes?. You could get permission to view destruction, perhaps photograph! And perhaps a handful of errors, etc. given by the "government" as a token of good faith! Just remember one thing I heard recently, "It's not how much money you have!!!!! It's how people will remember you when your gone!!!" How do you want to "go out?" like this??????........... I think not! Do the right thing, reconsider! We know you could!!! And we would forgive you!!! I hope I didn't offend you or anyone ! Speaking from my heart! This is my "mpc" family! I want to be here! I need my comrades! Guy! Best regards!! ((If this is a joke, you don't have to run it!)) Guy Araby Editor, being April 1st, are you serious or is this, a come on? Also being April 1st, is the Japanese story true? Regards A Gramster Dear Gramster, No the story from Japan was not true, but I think that drilling the various holes in all hoard notes is a good idea! Editor Dear Editor, I've been receiving the Gram for only a few months and have greatly enjoyed it. Sorry to see it go, but I understand from the shots that have been taken at you recently. Wish you the best. Thank you very much. Jim V. Editor! I just ain't buying it! I do not believe for one minute that 889 will be the last gram. I also do not buy the series 7XX story or the trunk story. As I finished reading, I was waiting for the pop-up screen "April Fool" I gotta give you credit though for trying to pull one over on an old detective. Regards, Roger Dear Editor, Oh the agony Joe must be going through not having a column in gram 8-8-8. Cheers, Sparky Dear Sparky, Is that a complaint hidden in an attempt at humor? Just kidding. Yes, it was poor planning. Joe certainly should have been in 888, but we just had so much breaking news!
