From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 891 Date: Saturday, April 05, 2003 8:36 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 891 Saturday April 5, 2003 Maastericht Slow by Harold Kroll The Maastericht paper money show opened with the usual anticipation of a great event and it is. It always is, but by Saturday evening I was actually a bit disapointed. The fact that I was disapointed by no great discoveries/finds testifies to the high expectations that this show has fostered. I found and bought a few interesting things, but cannot report anything that can be considered really exciting. On the other hand, there is still a day to go and hope doth spring eternal. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== It is great to get a show report (especially from Europe) while the show is still in progress. It makes us feel like the cable channel of numismatics. Harold?s comment at the end of his report about a day to go makes me reflect on the many shows that I have atteneded over the decades where the biggest and/or best deals were made on the final day--often in the final hours or even minutes. Memphis 2001 was a case in point. While virtually was either gone or packing, I made one of the biggest deals that I have ever made in terms of cost. Then within minutes I was able to make severl important resales that cinched the deal as a good one. The final plus was that that put me in the mood to beam for the long drive home. There are probably some reasons that the final hours can be the most important. The end of the show is impending doom for those who want to make deals. They are forced to make moves that they had been unwilling or unable to do before that. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, Who will be knowledgable MPC dealers at the Long Beach CAlif June show? unsigned Dear Editor, "A few were taken in completely. I'm sorry about that." SO---- I was one of the gullible ones, but, you know what? I'm kind of glad. My naiveté caused me to write an email I don't regret. All those good things I said deserved to be said, and if you must discount them considering the not-very-bright author, go ahead with the discount, but even after that, you should feel good knowing that one subscriber believes he gets his money's worth. I do have an excuse. I thought it was Sunday. Bill Murray Dear Editor, Good one Fred, you made a fool out of us all ... Good April fool joke ,YOU ARE THE BEST..... Keep up the good work......   Gary H Dear Editor (in response to Gram 888), I appreciate all of your hard work for the hobby throughout the years.  It was great to have you and Joe Boling as instructors for the Military class at the ANA last summer. Sincerely, F Dear Editor, I'm sorry to hear that the gram will cease and the web pages are for sale. I only hope that the statement on the 888 Gram of April 1 was only an April Fool's prank. Just in case this was not a prank: I realize that I have not been able to put anything of value to the gram but I greatly enjoyed reading it and have found myself trying to find the time even for a couple of minutes a day to try and find some items for sale either on the grams, Ebay or other auctions. I respect your decision since I cannot even begin to fathom the difficulties you must have gone through. It might be an alternative to give it sometime before making your final decision to call it "quits." I know that I really can't be of much help, due to the distance and let alone my work schedule, but please let me know if there is anything that I can be of assistance. Best regards, Winston Dear Editor, Nice April Fool's issue. I for one would be interested in liberating some of those saved notes from Japan. Or maybe some of the 711 series as soon as they are ready from the BEP's western office in Las Vegas. Regards, webfootbob Dear Editor,    I Truly Hope You Are Not Serious. This Would Be A Significant...Catastrophic Blow. As I Sit Here Typing This My Mind Is Wandering Toward The Devilish....Could This Be An April Fools Joke..?? But Maybe In The Storm Of Continued Criticism...You Are Honestly Giving It Up....Damn....I Will Be Very Upset. I Will Miss The Articles...Something New In Every Issue. I Will Miss The Banter... I Will Miss Your Escapades...You Tell Great Stories. I Will Miss The "Boss" I Will Miss The Crap, Yahoo Attaches To Every Gram. I Will Miss The Seeing Those, Take A Poke At You. I Will Miss Your Gracious, Humble Spirit. I Will Miss The Comradery...Community. I Will Miss Cataloging Every Gram...Since Before They Were Numbered. I Will Miss The Opportunity To Learn More...From Those That A Far More Knowledgeable Than I. I Will Miss Sending You My Monthly Subscription Fee.  ;-) I Will Miss Learning More, About Those In Our Area Of Interest. I Will Miss "My Daily Gram Fix" I Will Miss You..!! I Truly Hope You Are Not Serious.   Respect, Ed the Poet Dear Editor, Just read your retirement notice and all I can say is, "If it ain't fun no more, quit!" On the other hand, after all these years, I just found you guys recently and have been overjoyed with my new areas of replenishment. I'm 66 now and I started by saving MPC's that cousins gave me when they came home from WWII and, of course, I picked up a few during the Korean conflict. I only started the Vietnam series a year or so ago when I pick up some nice ones at an auction in Maine. I recently bought some more from Mr. Seelye, in New York, and hopefully can sustain a relationship there and perhaps a few others. I certainly hope you don't lose your desire and curiosity to continue to collect. It would be a shame to see you lose that interest also. Sorry we didn't meet up earlier, although I'm sure the outcome probably would not have changed, I would have enjoyed your knowledge and input to my collection.  Sincerely, Gale Gale B. Davis Dear Editor, It is a shame to some that you are leaving and discontinuing the Gram.  Not to me.  I for one am really happy not to be getting the trash on the computer any longer.  Port Clinton is a bad place too and I hope to never have the pleasure of returning. Instead of selling my collection, I am donating it to my nephews child care center to use as play money.  I am sure the 5 notes I got from Marv in the auction and the Leo May notes I have will help the little tykes in learning. Good luck in your future endeavors. Bill M Dear Editor, Yup, I fell for it and about the most convincing story ever! Glad it's just for fun and will continue to look forward to the gram. My payment for your autographed copy of the MPC book sent via PayPal and my address sent via previous email. Thanks for the fun & glad that's all it was,  Aubrey =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== May 30 ?
