They are numbers ro1-271806 and ro1-271146, in Unc and AU respectively. There are also an Unc 50 sen ro note and an AU 1 yen ro note in this sale. In response to my column last week, a prominent dealer in Asian material replied: "The 10 Yen Ro notes seem to be everywhere! There is lots of them around. A couple years ago the first Ro notes, the 50 sen came out in fairly big quantities. I have seen at least a dozen 10 Yens in Japan recently. The 5 yen seems to be still rare, none out, yet..." The 50 sen notes actually began to come out of China about 1990, through stamp auctions. The one-yens followed, in much smaller quantities. But if you look at the numbers in SB for this issue (page 593), you will see that huge quantities were not recovered at the end of the war. Since they were issued in limited areas and numbers, those unissued pieces presumably were still crated at war's end. All it takes is one of those crates to appear and the ro series will become like the local Ba Maw notes of Burma (SB105, page 660). I paid $390 for my first one; then $26.45 for another, and finally $40 for a sheet of four. More adventures in numismatics (continued from gram 876): Speaking of hoards, here's a story about a different kind of hoard. When I was in Seattle back in the early '70s, there was a local collector who had been in the service in Japan. At one of the monthly bazaars, during which local vendors would bring merchandise on base and set up a glorified flea market, he met an expatriate Chinese man who had two Kirin beer cases full of obsolete paper money of Asia. This was in the '50s or '60s--nobody was collecting paper money back then. But the mass of material was attractive; they negotiated a price based on so many cents per note (or notes per cent?), the serviceman to count them. He "counted" the notes, paid the vendor, and carted the two crates back to the barracks. Sitting on the edge of his bunk, he began to sort through the notes. When he came to his second US $1000 bill, he stopped and packed up the whole mass of notes and sent them home to his mom to safeguard until his tour was over. At the time I met him, he had not yet brought them to Seattle from his mom's home in Oregon. I was frantic for him to do so, because I anticipated that there would be a lot of MPC in the hoard. There were no catalogs beyond Sten at that time, so he was loathe to allow anyone into the group who had more information than he did. Eventually I left Seattle without ever seeing this group. Now, the story is just weird enough to be credible, but since I never saw the notes, I don't know if his story was embellished or not. But as for finding high-value US notes in the boxes; that seems perfectly feasible to me. The original owner did not suppose that any currencies survived the war unscathed. I wish I had had a chance to see this gold mine. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Doug Bell reports adding the 3700th note to his collection of minor denomination MPC by position number. Yes, 3700 piece in this one collection alone! Doug is collecting every fractional and one dollar note by position number. Just to be sure that we are communicating, that means that for each different fractional note, he needs 84 pieces to complete his collection. His collection is not the most ambitious collection possible, but it is the most ambitious ever attempted! You can help Doug by searching your duplicates and even your primary collection for pieces that he need in pursuit of this astonishing goal. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Esteeemed Editor, I just heard a report on Fox News that the Iraqi National Bank in Basrah was in the process of being looted (10AM EST, April 7). Looting is a common practice before law enforcement can be reestablished after combat, so your prediction of new currency for Iraq would be needed, even if they wanted to rid the currency of Saddam's image. I hope some reporters with photographers are present at the looting of the bank so pictures of it can be seen in the Bank Note Reporter and other media. Howard A. Daniel III Dear Steamed (and pressed) Editor: A very timely article on the prospect of new currency for Iraq. Good job. I would add an additional thought. This should be a task identified with the new civilian leadership. The desire is to have Iraqi fingerprints on the decision and not be a coalition action. I do not think we want this to be referred to as "coalition currency" which implies it is a tool of foreigners. When a new currency is introduced, is it feasible to devalue the old currency, much as was done with a C-Day? This would get the old currency out of circulation faster and would penalize those in Saddam's inner circle who have fled the country taking their ill-gotten gains with them. I can see problems with this in the case of second and third party holders of the current Iraqi currency (like Swiss bankers) getting caught with worthless notes when their only sin was greed. But it is a nice idea. Warner Dear Warner, Pressed? Possibly. Pressured? For sure! It is often said, the market is never wrong. The reason that the Iraqui dinar is as inflated as it is, is that the conversion prospect has certainly been anticipated by money traders in many countries. This is not to say that innocents cannot and will not be hurt by such a conversion. When the deutsch mark was introduced in June 1948, the local population was allowed to convert X amount in cash and Y amount in existing bank accounts. As an added, and interesting, twist, withdrawls from the converted bank accounts were also restricted.
