From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 900 Date: Tuesday, April 15, 2003 7:20 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 900 Tuesday April 15, 2003 A forgery that isn't By Joe Boling I received a note today advertised as a forgery - Central Reserve Bank of China 1000 yuan 1944, SB1254b, P-J32b, block AWL. Yes, the note looks pretty bad--the face plate is gray instead of gray- blue, and the main plate print quality is dreadful; the pink face tint is very faint; the block letters are ragged; the back is a brighter blue than usual. But the paper is correct; it has silk threads, and the red threads are actually a pinkish orange, the same as on all other notes of this emission; the paper has the same mottled dark brown color when held to the light, with no watermark, and a faint screen pattern. As it happens, I have a reference set of fourteen of these notes extending from block ATG to block AWL (many gaps), which you will note includes the block of the note that I received today. In my opinion, it is NOT a forgery; it merely represents the low ebb of quality as the war progressed. Does anyone have one of these with a block higher than AWL? If so, I'd like to look at it. The reference set was purchased from Roger Stolberg; anyone know what happened to him? Is he still dealing somewhere? More followup - now a couple of five-yen ro notes are reported to be available in unc. Unless you absolutely HAVE to have a ro note for an exhibit, illustration, or some other urgent reason, better defer buying any until the market stabilizes. It looks like the hoards I suspected in 1990 are finally beginning to surface. My thanks to the gramster who is making these observations known to me. An interesting item from one of the scholarship applications: this collector was an MPC user once upon a time, and shortly after the 591 C-day there were no $1 bills available. The finance office or the BX cashiers clipped twenty 5c notes together to be used as dollars; he received such a clip-full at the BX and ended up keeping a few of them. Has anyone else ever heard of this technique for covering shortages? =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Yesterday I was reading in the current Numismatic News (cover date uncertain at the moment) a debate on the idea of donating a collection to a museum as opposed to selling it. It seems like an interesting argument. I have some thoughts that I am sending to NN today as a letter to the editor. Possibly this is a subject on which Gramsters would like to comment. I might also ask NN for permission to reprint the pro/con articles that appeared there. It is a $5 denomination, serial# F00000089F and position #4. There are 2 errors on this note. It has a $1 back, and to the left of the large #1, has FOUR written from top to bottom as opposed to the $4 denomination that is written bottom to top. The other error is on the front where the note is cut low enough, that a sliver of the note above shows. Also, since it was mis-cut, the serial # just touches the picture. I think that is all the info on this note, but if there is anything else you would like to know please tell me and I'll try to comply.
