Otherwise, I like to see unique and the rarest pieces in the possession of collectors who will care for them, study them, write about them, and exhibit them at shows and conventions. I have visited one museum with over one million pieces in its collection. Most of them had not been touched, moved or seen by anyone since they were donated, and normally, the vast majority are never seen by the public and/or numismatists. And some museums are also not that friendly to numismatists and other researchers visiting their facilities to look at, study and write about them. This is not all museums, but I have run into enough that I think twice about donating to them. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Frequently we are given some information that does not conform with what we know or at least think we know about MPC or other areas of interest. The question then is do we accept this new view? This is not an easy question. Basically, it is a matter of credibility and sometimes of multiplicity. Often sources get upset with me because I do not accpet their recollections as being sufficient to change something in one of the books. Sometimes a collectors says that he used MPC in a given country at a given time. That is a recollection that is hard for me to accept without some sort of confirmation. Even though that particular point is not the main point I am driving at, it is a subject worth discussing and I look forward to an comments you might have on it. My point today is sort of the inverse. I recently chatted with a veteran who had served in Vietnam in the 1970s. He said that he had not recollection of MPC. None. I was surprised. That made me recall another report that I had from an advanced collector who had served in Japan during the MPC period and had no recollection of MPC there. Again, I was amazed. In both cases we are certain enough of MPC use not to even consider additional research, but it does prove the frailty of human memory. In addition I would give to you a note that does not have the printing problem, in addition to other compensation to be determined. I understand your concern about the error in your possession. And I am prepared to take the heavy responsibility of taking the possession of the note and safe guarding it's future. I am prepared to compensate you for the inconvenience of storing the note in my collection, safe from the potential of confiscation. Just let me know when the transfer can take place. David Dear David and Bill, You guys just do not get it. We are talking about defective goods here. Just on principle you should want to get it replaced with standard notes. However, you even run the risk of having the note not honored or even confiscated by an over zealous finance officer. I highly suggest that you take that advice given in Gram 900 and submit the note for replacement. Warner Dear Warner, Good try! I get the drift, but there is a difference between this situation and the stored 691/701s. Series 031 is CURRENT. It is necessary to maintain stocks for use in normal commerce. Finance clerk Dear Esteeemed Editor, Joe Boling mentioned that MPC was stapled together to assist in financial transactions and asked if anyone else knew about them. In Viet Nam, I just happened to be visiting a friend in a large old hotel on Tran Hung Dao street that had been converted to enlisted quarters sometime in 1966. It was payday night and the several pool tables had about twenty noisy men around each one. I just happened to notice that they had stapled ten $10 MPC to make $100 bets in a game with two small white cubes with dots on them. I could not figure out what they were doing, so, of course, my friend and I went out to his favorite bar and celebrated his DEROS the next day. Today, I received a package from a dealer in the Upper Michigan Peninsula down of Manistique. The postal cancel on his packet has UPMPC MI 498-499. I think this town needs to be used for an MPC-related postal cover with the "UPMPC" cancellation. What do you think? My item about a Vietnamese monograph mentioning $2,430 million of MPC issued in Viet Nam had me thinking. Please no nasty comments from the editor. Can we verify from the high blocks and serials of all of the known MPC that number is the total MPC issued during the Vietnam War? Has anyone done any work on the total face value of each issue and the amount issued per person? Is that latter number similar to what the dollars and cents issued in the USA? Does anyone care?
