Some museums that have numismatic material in their vaults have never displayed them. One museum in Western New York had an extensive collection, never on display, poorly put away and nature took it's course. If a museum doesn't display some of it's numismatic holdings or publishes a monthly journal containing some numismatic articles about their holdings on occasion then they should put their numismatic material into the market and pursue their areas of primary interest. I am all for numismatic specialty museums and museums that give numismatic items an equal venue to other subjects they also have on display. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Gram 901 got caught in the nether world. Round and round it went, but never came out so it was resent on Thursday morning. The additional day did not allow me enough time to notice that I titled Howard?s article as Library Donations instead of museum donations. Oh well. And the AOL problems continue to plague the Gram. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor and Bill, Bill Haines discovery of the second $6 variety (a $5 note printed with a $1 back) of series 031 MFC raises more questions. We have a report of a $1 note printed with a $5 inverted back....another $6 note. Both of these notes are serial number F00000089F. These are the only two denominations that have been reported with a serial number 89. Does anybody out there have an 89 serial number on any of their notes? What is the significance of the $6 value? Bill, does your note have an inverted back? I want to thank all of you who have been sending in your serial/pos. number reports. This has allowed us to uncover numerous errors. Another variety which needs some clarification is the $4 note with serial numbers 200 and above. Dave Seelye reports the position number under the words series 031 instead of its typical location to the right of the lower serial number. Do these notes have 1 or 2 serial numbers? Could this be a second printing? Please check your notes with serial numbers 200 and higher on other denominations to see if there are any differences. I traded all my notes away for sn 7 so I need your input on any varieties or anomalies. Great find Bill. Regards, Al Dear Editor, I have not read the NN article about donating vs. selling, but one significant factor is timing. If you are talking about lifetime transfers, the determining factor may be taxes. Rare notes that were obtained for little money could lead to a sizeable tax bite in a lifetime sale. On the other hand, the deduction for a charitable gift of property is based on its fair market value. A post-death sale should not lead to any income tax consequences since the estate or the beneficiary would have a stepped-up tax basis equal to the fair market value at the date of death. The same is true for a post-death donation. If the estate is large enough, however, there may be estate tax consequences which could be avoided by a lifetime transfer, or a partial sale and partial donation. Even though the federal estate tax exemptions are increasing, it is advisable for those with sizeable collections to seek out professional advice on estate planning issues, especially if they desire to preserve their collections from beyond the grave. In Viet Nam, I just happened to be visiting a friend in a large old hotel on Tran Hung Dao street that had been converted to enlisted quarters sometime in 1966. It was payday night and the several pool tables had about twenty noisy men around each one. I just happened to notice that they had stapled ten $10 MPC to make $100 bets in a game with two small white cubes with dots on them. I could not figure out what they were doing, so, of course, my friend and I went out to his favorite bar and celebrated his DEROS the next day. My item about a Vietnamese monograph mentioning $2,430 million of MPC issued in Viet Nam had me thinking. Please no nasty comments from the editor. Can we verify from the high blocks and serials of all of the known MPC that number is the total MPC issued during the Vietnam War? Has anyone done any work on the total face value of each issue and the amount issued per person? Is that latter number similar to what the dollars and cents issued in the USA? Does anyone care?
