Daniel III   At the Charlotte ANA National Money Show on March 23 (the last day), a man walks up to my NI/NBS/IBNS club table.  He asked me if I knew anything about American dollar notes for Japan after World War II.  I get some wild questions at the table and this one was starting off to be the best for this show. I started questioning the man by what he meant by dollars for Japan, and I quickly figured out he was talking about Allied Military Currency (AMC), but he insisted they were dollars. But as I questioned him further, he started to become a little irritated with me.  Most of you know me as of diplomat quality, so I could not see why he was getting upset with me.  So I stopped telling him they were not dollars and asked him why he was asking me about these notes.  He said his father, Albert Nelson Dale Jr. an US Army T2 (Corporal) was on the Army detail packing this paper money at the San Francisco Mint during WWII, and that prisoners were being used as the packers while prison guards closely guarded the whole thing.  Wow!  This was getting interesting, but I could see he was not into my interrogation, so I asked him if he was interested in purchasing any of the pieces for himself.  He replied in the affirmative, so I gave him directions to Leo May. After about ten minutes, I walked to Leo?s table and the man was going through AMC and JIM notes with him.  I sat down and decided to start my interrogation again.  This time, he was not so upset and was really happy.   I guess Leo put him in the right mood.  I asked him if he remembered any of the details about what his father said about packing the money.  He repeated the location, using prisoners with a small Army detail, and lots of prison guards.  Then he added that 10,000 notes were placed in each wooden crate, the wooden lids were pre-holed for screws and they were screw down onto the crates when the packing was completed.  Then the top of each screw had plastic seals put over them.  This was very interesting but he knew no more about the seals.  Do you think they were some form of wax and stamped with seals to easily show that anyone had played with them?  Then he said each crate was wrapped in several metal bands.   He could not remember anything else, but his father must have participated in getting the crates to a ship(s) or plane(s).  Maybe Fred, Joe or one of you can start corresponding with him and find out more about his father?s association with Japan AMC.  His name is Albert N. Dale III, and he lives at 9029 Victory Trail, Union Mills, NC 28167, and his father might have left him many WWII photographs and other ?stuff,? so it would be very worthwhile to contact this man.  But please handle him gently and not like my old Master Sergeant ways.  Good luck! =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Our biggest disappointments in Gram publishing--and surprise too--has been the slow use of the for sale section. This section is intended to be a place to buy and sell notes. In spite of the under utilization, the section has worked VERY well. There have been some major sales and many minor sales. Sellers have reported selling out and have reported selling items within minutes of the Gram being published. Nonetheless, the section has been under used. Even though it is extra work for the Gram staff, sales items are good for the Gram and we want to include your for sale items. Send them to the Gram in the body of an e-mail (preferred) or as an attachment (very much less preferred). Having said all of the above, I can report that people who have continued to check the for sale items over the past few months have found some good items for sale. Congratulations--and thank you--to those buyers and sellers. Ed Hoffman has provided a nice list of MPC for sale. It will run over the next few days so be sure to have a look. Furthermore, I am going to work up material from the black hole for sale. I will try to have a new item, however insignificant--or significant, every day. Watch the Gram for things to buy and send us lists of items for sale! Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor:   This afternoon, on eBay, I spied an unusual item.  It was a 661 $10 in VF, but was completely missing all of the ink in the color of "10 Dollars."  Anything that was supposed to be that color is not there, obverse and reverse.  I grew so excited, I purchased the note immediately.   But then I consulted your book.  On the error pages I looked at, I saw what you have pictured regarding notes missing colors / printings (and counterfeits).  I also saw the unusual, but authentic, 692 $20 that was missing two color printings.  My heart sunk when I realized that my haste to find something so rare may, more likely, be a counterfeit.  But I have to ask myself two questions:  One, could only one color be bleached, when all of the others are in tact no problem?  And two, if one is going to counterfeit a note, why would they counterfeit one of the rarest MPCs?   I obviously haven't received the note yet, but I intend to put it under ultraviolet light when I get it.  So my question for you is, are any notes known of this type of error, or what are the odds that this could be authentic?  Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks a bunch!   Matthew J. Hello Matthew, Thanks for writing. I found the item on ebay. My preliminary opinion is that the note has been washed and the color (blue in particlar) has washed out. I think some color is missing from both sides which is very damning if I am correct. Also, the note might well have been washed in a uniform pocket in Vietnam. Of course I cannot say this for sure without seeing the note. Examination under sun, incandescent, flourscent, AND UV light will be helpful. I plan on running your letter in the Gram (assume that is ok and also assume that you receive the Gram). I will look forward to your report after receiving the item.
