From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 904 Date: Sunday, April 20, 2003 8:30 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 904 Sunday April 20, 2003 More on Museum donations. Flemming Lyngbeck Hansen I have myself thought of the same thing. To ensure that primarily the rare stuff is preserved for the future generations, I have thought of giving at least the most rare items to a worthy museum. (Provided it's better protected than the Baghdad archeological museum....) Because notes in the hand of collectors can get lost, as the following story is an example of. Last month more than 600000 Danish kroner in cash (= about 90000 US dollars) was found in a garbage container. They were picked up by an honest person and handed over to the police. The notes were of the Danish series of 1972 (Pick 48 to 53), but mainly 100 kroner bills (P51). This series is out of daily use, but still valid. The police started investigating, and eventually the owner was found. It was the surviving spouse of a person who over a lifetime had gathered this sum as life savings and kept the notes in the home. Apparently the spouse was not much involved in this, because the explanation given to the police was, that the spouse thought the notes were obsolete and therefore worthless, and this was the reason the notes were thrown out. Now, because of the honest person, the money was recovered. What can we as collectors learn from this story? I mean, had it been a MPC/AMC collection, the spouse would have been correct; officially the notes would have been worthless. And if they had been valid, they probably would have been spent or handed over to a bank. Face it, people who don't collect, often don't care, unless they have the right information. So, first, involve your spouse (if you have one, otherwise another trustworthy person) in your hobby, at least to the point that the collection needs to be preserved. Secondly, if you want to be sure that the collection is handed over to the next generation safely, either make a will, or sell off the collection in time. The tricky question here is, when is "in time"? To avoid answering this question, make the will. In there you can include donations to museums, you know will take good care of it, if that is what you wish. But the key thing here is that you have to do "the dirty work" (= deciding the future of your collection) yourself, and not leave that problem to your spouse or others. Annual World War II Conference at Siena College By Howard A. Daniel III In my Summer 2002 issue of the Army Historical Foundation (AHF) “On Point” newsletter, there is an article with the title of “Siena College to Sponsor Annual World War II Conference in 2003”. Siena College, in Loudonville, New York, sponsors an annual international and multidisciplinary conference on World War II. The 2003 conference will center on 1943. The person to contact about this conference is Professor Thomas O. Kelly II in the Department of History, Siena College, 515 Loundon Road, Loundonville, NY 12211-1462. His telephone and fax number is 518-786-5052, and his email is legendziewicz@siena.edu. I am sure that a Gramster can make a presentation every year about MPC and/or military money of World War II, and exhibit pieces too. I am sure information of use to us can be found as a result of these conferences and new collectors are likely to be created after they see what we collect, research and write about. Who lives near this college? =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Doug “Wiz” Bell has received reports that the Gram has arrived with attachments. He further reports that that is probably because of a virus in the server that his used to deliver Gram subscriptions. He is working to hospitalize that computer. For the foreseeable future, the Gram will not be sent with attachments, so if you receive a Gram with an attachment, DO NOT open the attachment. The Gram itself is probably uninfected, but the attachment could be dangerous. We continue to have delivery difficulties to AOL addresses and I have complained bitterly about that here (but not to AOL because I am not a customer there, PLEASE call AOL if you ARE an AOL customer). We also continue to fight the problems with work arounds that have not been working around very well. However, now with this virus report, it occurs to me that possibly AOL is doing something good. Possibly AOL is able to detect the virus and not forward the infected Grams. Even if this is so, they are not doing a very good service, because they are not notifying the sender (MPCGram/papermoneyworld) or the intended receipent, so I cannot let them off the hook, but it is interesting. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, Just received the May Bank Note Reporter. On Page 6 there is a picture of Judy and Fred receiving the President's award from John Wilson, Tiffany Bueschel and Joe Boling. On Page 14 "letters to the Editor" John Wilson writes glowing praise for the FEST and many of the activities. David Dear Gram, Please refer back to MPCGram # 696 about Ray Czahor's report on a visit to the ANS Headquarters and the mess that their accumulation was/is in! I believe just about everybody who has collected for any period of time can relate horror stories about donated items being stored after a short period on display an then disappearing at some future date. I for one will not make donations of anything other than perhaps a buck or two to these folks! John Glass Dear John, Wow, Gram 696! How can you find things in 900 Grams? Smells like a story here to me! Editor =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== May 30 ?
