From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 906 Date: Wednesday, April 23, 2003 2:43 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 906 Wednesday April 23, 2003 "Rendezvous With Destiny" Notes Come Home by Harold Kroll Since the first Fest was held back in 2000, there have been many collectibles generated by various collectors. Autographed items, souvenir cards, magnets quite a few of these items were created specifically for participants, others were items that get generated from leftover happenings. MFC and AFC notes are getting a lot of attention from collectors. For those of you who do not know these terms, here is an explanation. MFC stands for MILITARY FEST CERTIFICATES and AFC stands for ALLIED FEST CERTIFICATES. These were printed in various denominations over the past years and used to reenact the pay process as close to military procedure as was possible, at the Fests, ANA Summer Seminar events, and even Masstricht Netherlands, the Euros were introduced. From the beginning, Fest one, I had elected to collect the certificates with serial number two along with any other items that were issued with serial numbers at each event. From Fest one, first ANA Seminar and Fest two this was a fairly easy project but then other collectors started taking a fancy to these little pieces of paper and things started to tighten up. Another collector, I won't say his name, but his initials are David Seelye, decided that this was a very good item to collect and he picked serial number one for his project. Problem was he did not stop at collecting, he had a brain cramp and wanted to have all the notes and he set out to do so. David is a close friend and I do pick on him from time to time but he is also a very big supporter of the Fest by doing what he does. I was not able to attend the seminar of 2002 but was fortunate to acquire examples from a few examples of issues there from those who did, Warner Talso, and yes David both worked to get me as many serial number two's of the AFC notes as they could. I ended up buying a few from another student to almost complete the set of serial number two's. There have been a few other events held, Texfest I, Texfest II and the ANA museum opening, with 3 different denominations being issued for this event. "Rendezvous With Destiny" was the overprint used on Series 022 from Fest III for these 3 issued notes, 16 sets were printed, that is 48 notes, to be given out at the opening. The suffix letter was changed to a silhouette of a bomber and of course the overprint. As far as we can tell there were only 4 complete sets given out, serial numbers 1, 2, 4, 8, with the rest of the notes being given out in single pieces. By now you probably can see where this is going, and it gets better. Gail Baker, ANA Educational Director, ended up with the serial number 2 set and was bombarded with phone calls from several people to buy the set as were two out of the other three owners of the sets. Everyone knew that set number 8 would not be for sale as this guy collects eight's so that left three possible sets for a few of us crazies to go after and we did just that with no avail. After some serious thought Gail Baker decided to put her set up for auction at Fest IV with the proceeds to go to the scholarship fund that we support. She had mailed the set to Fred which almost became a disaster as anything that gets mailed to Fred seems to get lost in the Port Clinton Black Hole, and they did. With help from Larry we found the set among the piles of notes in Fred's office and a sigh of relief was had by all. Up to this point it was not known what was going to happen if the notes were not found. Auction day at the Fest finally became a reality, Sunday morning. As the auction proceeded with many good items that were donated being sold, the tension was building for the number 2 set of notes. It was listed as lot #142 out of 144 lots. This was because of the trouble locating the notes in Fred's office or they would have been featured sooner in the auction catalog. The auctioneer decided after several queries were made to put lot # 142 up for auction about halfway through the sale and the bidding started. I really do not remember if there were other bidders at the start but it came down to David and me with David winning the lot. I was number "2"in the bidding, kind of fitting in a way. I also came in number "2" in the March Madness MPC Champion quiz. Being a little disappointed, in fact a great amount of disappointment, I had to come up with an idea to get this set of notes. I knew David was going to go after the number 1 set, what I did not know at the time was his plan. As it turned out he made a trade with the owner of the number 1 set for the number 2 set, what all was involved I do not know. I knew then that I had to come up with an offer that would make a trade for the set possible. Larry had decided to ride with me on the return trip to L.A. (lower Alabama). While the company and conversations were great and very enjoyable, all the time I'm thinking how to put a trade together for the number 2 set of notes, and I did just that. The next day after arriving home, I had a priority mail package on the way with an offer for the set. A few days later I made a phone call to see if the package had arrived, it did. This collector was amazed to receive an offer so soon after the Fest and I promptly explained that this set had to come home and be with the rest of the number 2 notes. He was unsure at the time about what he wanted to do on trading. I told him to take all the time he needed but inside I was saying trade now. Several weeks went by and I was wondering what was going to happen on the trade offer and a week ago this last Saturday I received a phone call and the trade was completed. I picked up the notes at the post office Friday afternoon and when I got home there was a e-mail from the sender stating that he was excessively worried about the US mail, had the notes arrived. I fired off a reply saying that the notes had arrived safe and sound. They were home. This set of notes has quite a pedigree behind them already, but they will not be going anywhere soon. There are times when you think that things do not go your way but eventually things work out for the best in the end. Thanks W. I should mention that Al Glaser has published a catalog with listings of all known issues of MFC and AFC including replacements, errors, listing of notes by serial numbers, etc. It is a great addition to this area of collecting. =========================================== Editorial =========================================== Mel Steinbergs letter below giving us his new phone numbers brought the matter of the Hot Contact List to the front burner. A few days ago, we worked a little on the HCL. It should be coming through more clearly now, but still the multiple computers etc make it difficult to guarantee a nice readable format. Now, I would like everyone on the list to please check your data. Send us corrections so that we can correct them here AND the other places where the HCL is published. Please do it promptly. Fred =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, We have moved, for the time being, both our phone and fax no. is 1-415-897-1654. Please make these changes to your records. Mel Dear MPCgram, The article by Joe Boling was fascinating!!! I would like to say that the information there is really interesting and is worth keeping. I am a collector of WWII currency, but a young one at it. I can just add to Joe Boling's article is that I myself got a ro note, about unc, the 50-sen note, I got it last month here in Beijing, for $125. Keep sending them interesting articles!!! Neil Kaplan Dear Neil, Thank you. We love praise (even if it is directed at Joe)! What else did you get in Beijing? Editor Dear MPC GRAM gang: I am a bit shy to barge into this very interesting and enlightening discussion which I have been watching for months since my friend of long years, Howard Daniel, suggested that I should subscribe to MPC GRAM. I have to say that I am very impressed with the level of knowledge and expertise that is reflected in virtually all of the contributions from the active participants. This is a truly interesting forum and I am learning a lot from it. I would like to ask the group if there are any leads that can point me in the direction of Thai medals and rank insignias/uniforms for the Royal Thai Army from 1930 to 1945. Being that I live in Thailand and have been here for the last 17 years, it seems ludicrous that I would ask such a thing. However, even the Thais that I know don't seem to have a clue and the military museums are very difficult to access for civilians. I am thinking that there may be some folks in this network that have knowledge about this subject which may be a jump start for me. I am open to any suggestions. Thanks for the read. Best regards, John Conrad Bangkok Dear John, What is going on here? So much praise? You guys must be setting us up for a big fall! It is a long sheet of paper with mimeographed information about each day?s tour to sites/locations not far from Tokyo. The April 1 date is a ?Silk Mill Tour? and there are another two long sheets of mimeographed paper with a colored in Red Cross describing it. And I have the Katakura & Company Limited 32-pages booklet handed out to each person on the tour of the silk mill. The booklet is interesting in that it is dated 1937 and done on high grade paper with a tied cover, and not postwar. The reason I bought this group is because of the ?Bankers? Club? on the ARC pages. But it might also be connected to chits and/or coupons at that club and this material could be added to a collection and possibly used in an exhibit. The junk store I bought it appears to have pamphlets for all of the other tour dates, if someone is interested in them. I want $5.50 postpaid for the three above items.
