I first became interested in military numismatics about 10 years ago when I decided to get specimens of Series 481 and 521, the MPC I used during my Army tour in Germany. This led to getting the basic set of MPC and any other military money and related items I could find. The purchase of "World War II Remembered" really got my interests up because I love to collect things with history behind them and there isn't anything with such a wide and fascinating area of history as those created by conflicts and emergencies. But you don't get the full story by reading a book. You need to see the specimens and talk to the experts to really gain the knowledge you need to fully appreciate our hobby. This became very evident when I attended my first Fest (MPC Fest IV). The friendly people I met, the fantastic specimens I saw, and the sharing of information was simply great. I was determined to continue adding to what I was learning and attending the summer seminar has to be the next step. I would like to thank everyone, personally and individually, for the opportunity they have given me; the time and effort they have devoted to the promotion of our hobby; and the financial support they have so generously given - but this is just not possible because there are so many that have played a role. Just look at the list of names in MPCGram 909. To each and everyone of you, please accept my sincere gratitude for this opportunity. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== AOL under attack. We have a new approach to fighting the way that AOL kills your daily Gram. If you are an AOL user, hopefully, your Grams have been getting through much more regularly recently. The simple answer is that this is good news, but there is no guarantee that AOL will not figure out another way to get us. I still highly suggest that if you receive your Gram at an AOL address, that you come up with an alternative address for your Gram. Create a new address at Yahoo, Hotmail or some other free service or start a second subscription at a work address, spouse address or whatever. We are sorry to have to spend so much time on this subject, but we love our AOL subscribers too (even if AOL does not)! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Esteeemed Editor, If you go to www.SaigonWarrior.com , you can find a picture of the Free Military Forces (FMF) Headquarters in Saigon during the Vietnam War. There are quite a few flags flying at its entrance and I could not clearly see all of them, so I asked Jim Finnigan , a former CMAC Signal Officer if he could see which flags are in the picture. He wrote that one of them was the Netherlands and he remembers they had a communications team there. If so, are they in THE MPC catalog because all of the FMF had PX privileges and had to have spent MPC in them. Sincerely, Howard A. Daniel III Dear Editor, Remember the old expression, "protect me from my friends as I know who my enemies are"!!!! Next time that you need your office straightened, please call me. Richard Dear Editor, After reading the Grams published just after Fest IV and the stories about the infamous "black hole" I am sure from a personal standpoint you were a lot more than sad by what had occurred. Please take heart in the fact that there were (still are) individuals who take friendship seriously and are there for you when you need it. Hopefully all will be recovered. I'll see you in Memphis! Regards, Roger Dear Esteeemed Editor, I went to the www.eureree.com site and registered for the auction. I received an email today that a fully illustrated catalogue will be mailed to me on or about May 15. If you or others interested in Thai WWII paper money and postal items want this catalogue, please register as soon as possible because I am sure the number will be limited, especially for mailing overseas. FYI. Howard A. Daniel III Dear Howard, This sounds great except that I could not get the address to work. Please figure that out and we will publish your third letter on the same sale before it even takes place! Editor Dear Editor, For the third time, please put me down for Fest V ? I am almost getting some type of syndrome that you don?t want me to show up cause you never log my reservation. I am working on some driver packages that I will send to Judy that will have maps and signs and everything for next years Fest. Cheers, Sparky Dear Sparky, Oh that Fest. You want to come to the Fest. Now I have it! Editor Dear Editor, Gram delivery has been much better. I just got three in a row. It is a long sheet of paper with mimeographed information about each day?s tour to sites/locations not far from Tokyo. The April 1 date is a ?Silk Mill Tour? and there are another two long sheets of mimeographed paper with a colored in Red Cross describing it. And I have the Katakura & Company Limited 32-pages booklet handed out to each person on the tour of the silk mill. The booklet is interesting in that it is dated 1937 and done on high grade paper with a tied cover, and not postwar. The reason I bought this group is because of the ?Bankers? Club? on the ARC pages. But it might also be connected to chits and/or coupons at that club and this material could be added to a collection and possibly used in an exhibit. The junk store I bought it appears to have pamphlets for all of the other tour dates, if someone is interested in them. I want $5.50 postpaid for the three above items.
