From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 911 Date: Thursday, May 01, 2003 7:58 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 911 Thursday May 1, 2003 Another Survey By Joe Boling Some of you might remember that last year I reported on the cash that was handled following the annual convention of the Pacific NW Numismatic Assn. The convention was this past weekend (conflicting with CICF), and I have just finished the analysis of the cash that came in (and that will be deposited later today (that which was not deposited Saturday)). Old design notes, and older series, continue to disappear. There was not a single note above $5 in old designs (and only two of the $5 bills). Stars are also not very widely used, amounting to 1.1% of the notes seen. Of 412 dollar bills being deposited, they break out like this: 1985 1/2% (two notes); 1995 10%; 1999 63%; 2001 27%. Five $1 star notes in 412 pieces. Of $5 bills (74 notes): 1985 and 1988A, 1.35% each (one note); 1995 2.7% (two notes); 1999 55%; 2001 39%. Of $10 bills (22 notes): series 1999 82%; 2001 18%. One star note (series 1999). Of $20 bills (109 notes): series 1996 55%; series 1999 36%; 2001 9%. In $50 bills (8 notes); all 1996. In $100 bills, 7 pieces, again all 1996. The $5 turns out to be a larger workhorse than I realized; there was more value circulating in fives than in tens (though the twenties blow them both out of the water). We also took in twenty dimes. I started the till with Sacagawea dollars and CU 1995 $2 bills; the registration woman said the customers loved them as far as they went. More next year. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Sorry that I left you Gramless for the past two (nearly three) days. I had to make an unexpected road trip that wore me out. When I got to the destination the telephones in the Holiday Inn did not work (none of them) so I had to look for an internet café or equivalent to put out a Gram. The desk person gave directions. After returning to the Inn twice for clarification, I gave up. There was some sort of reason that we were not to have a Gram. Of course all of my in boxes overflowed from neglect compounding the problems so I am lucky to get this Gram out, but there will be no subscription extensions! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, I hate to bug you with this, but I can't seem to locate Marcus to bug him. I was able to get a showcase at a local high school for National Coin Week, and Marcus graciously supplied a nice variety of MPC and associated materials to be displayed. When I went to the school yesterday to pick up the materials, the instructor that arranged for our use of the showcase had some occupational pieces. He wanted to know the approximate value of them, so I told him that I would show them to Marcus at our club meeting last night. Unfortunately, Marcus couldn't make it. I emailed the images to Marcus, but haven't heard back from him yet. I need to take these pieces back to the instructor today, so he doesn't think I am a thief. I have attached some small pics of these pieces, because your mailbox can?t take anything too huge (I tried). Can you take a stab at their value? I suspect that they aren?t worth a lot, if the prices at eBay are any indication. Thanks! - Gail Phillips Dear Fred, Are all things well in Port Clinton? No 'Grams have arrived since Monday (#910)... Just checkin' Jay Dear Gram, I received my Series 691 $1 note, marked void, in the mail yesterday. I was very pleased with it. It had the VOID stamp on the face and had a USO stamp over the back. Of course the note was in CU otherwise. William Choate Dear Esteeemed Editor, I sent an email to friends in Bangkok and they said I had the email address wrong to access the auction there that includes many Thai WWII paper money and postal items. I could not believe I had made a mistake but it appears the address should be http://www.eurseree.com/ .Again, I would like to suggest that everyone register for their catalogue as soon as possible because the number sent overseas will likely be limited. You can also see an online version of the catalog but some of the lots did not have estimated prices and/or images. Good hunting and good luck. Howard A. It is a long sheet of paper with mimeographed information about each day?s tour to sites/locations not far from Tokyo. The April 1 date is a ?Silk Mill Tour? and there are another two long sheets of mimeographed paper with a colored in Red Cross describing it. And I have the Katakura & Company Limited 32-pages booklet handed out to each person on the tour of the silk mill. The booklet is interesting in that it is dated 1937 and done on high grade paper with a tied cover, and not postwar. The reason I bought this group is because of the ?Bankers? Club? on the ARC pages. But it might also be connected to chits and/or coupons at that club and this material could be added to a collection and possibly used in an exhibit. The junk store I bought it appears to have pamphlets for all of the other tour dates, if someone is interested in them. I want $5.50 postpaid for the three above items.
