From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 920 Date: Sunday, May 18, 2003 8:05 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 920 Sunday May 18, 2003 MINI FEST IN ALABAMA-FANTASTIC By Harold Kroll The dust has settled and all is back to somewhat a normal evening, but I am still excited about today's event. Doug Bell arrived about 9:30 this morning from Franklinton, Louisiana. We chatted and looked at notes for a while and left to go to the post office. Upon return we found that Larry Smulczenski, Leo and Valerie May had arrived for the days festivities. We all greeted one another and then started discussing paper money. While preparing some goodies on the grill, the three of them were discussing various subjects, date change for Fest V was a hot topic, putting this notice in the gram requesting feedback from anyone who had dealings with Phil Goldstein that are outstanding/unfinished and transacted through the USPS, exhibits and talks that are slated for Memphis and Baltimore, this past Maastricht papermoney show and many other things. I went inside to change my clothes after grilling was finished and returned to the round table to rejoin the discussions. That is when Leo pulled out his challenge coin. I could not invoke the three-step rule to retrieve my coin from inside the house so I GOT BUSTED at my own event. What can I say? It worked out OK as I was providing the soft drinks anyway. Show and tell started and everyone had brought something of special interest to talk about. Larry had received some new information on the German Lotterie tickets which was great. This new information changed how we thought the system worked, Larry may write an article on this. Another item discussed was the new 691 VOID note that was offered in the gram a few weeks ago. The stamp was the main topic, could it be an original stamp that has made in to states, a new one that has been recently made, or what? We did some comparing with other overstamped notes but no conclusive decisions were made. Payday took place and all attendees received a set of the Chambliss 681 reprint notes with a 3 cent Ruptured Duck stamp affixed, Wilmer Alabama post mark and dated 5-17-2003 to mark the event. Notes are also stamped with MINI FEST, Wilmer, Alabama with set number on the back of the notes. Doug Bell made up the bands that were put around each set of notes, thanks Doug. A total of twelve sets were produced, 5 going to attendees, one reserved for the Fest V auction and the remaining 6 sets were offered in the gram on a first come basis by e-mail and a donation of $50.00 to the MPC Scholarship Fund. All sets were spoken for within hours. The following Gramsters are making the donations and will receive souvenir sets: David Seelye, Russ Walsh, Al Glaser, Joe Boling, Mark Watson, Warner Talso. Additional collectors also wrote, but were too late. Remember, there will be a set in the Fest auction. Thanks to all! Time to eat rolled around and everyone dug in and as usual there was more to eat than a platoon could have consumed. Smoked ham, chicken, brats, hot-dogs and all the trimmings, what a feast. I'm going to be eating leftovers for the rest of next week. Doug brought some fresh picked strawberries from his private patch and my daughter prepared home-made strawberry ice cream. This was after the first batch she made and it ended up on the floor of her Yukon bringing it to the house. She was not a happy camper. A vehicle was riding her back bumper when she approached our driveway and she made a fast right turn to avoid being hit and the container full of ice cream slid off the seat to the floor. After everyone ate all they could handle, papermoney again was the subject of discussions until Leo asked about the cake and ice cream, we also celebrated my birthday today. As Larry would say, I'm celebrating my 20th anniversary of my 39th birthday. Larry brought a set of the BAFSV specimen notes for us to look at and take a scan before delivering them to the owner, second known set, a delight to see and hold in your hands. He still has problems with his computer and cannot get his scanner to work. Doug brought his set of MPC and we all enjoyed looking over his notes and used his VOID overprints to compare the void stamp. Doug is approaching 4,000 notes on his quest to complete a set of notes, 5 cent through 1.00 denominations for all position numbers and series excluding the 651 fractionals. Check out his want list on the PMW website, you may have some duplicates he could use. I brought out a few specialty items to show and talk about, rubber export coupons, German and Canada war savings certificates, scrip and bonds. Leo had brought some of his inventory with him and we browsed through his stock. A few notes changed hands and Doug was able to add several pieces to his ongoing master set project. He made a swap with Leo and later looking through the notes Leo got from Doug Larry and I both picked out a note we wanted. Larry got a 471 25 cent note with serial number ending in 39, with 39 position number, and I picked out a 481 25 cent flipper note. Leo has a nice selection of notes, if you get the chance to look through his inventory, do so. Nolan Mims, the president of our local coin club came by for a while and joined in the festivities and enjoyed the food. Larry offered to come over for a future meeting of the coin club and do a show and tell about the use of ultra violet light, (black light) and what can be found on various notes. The day was running out of time and about 4:00PM Doug had to return to Louisiana to rejoin his wife, Larry, Leo and I continued on until 6:00PM and they had to leave for home also. For being a short notice event we had five attendees which was super, but a better statistic is that we had 1/3, yes 33 1/3 percent of the original 12 festers that attended the first MPC Fest, Port Clinton Ohio, in 2000. Quite a feat if I must say so myself. I cannot end this without saying many thanks to my wife, Bonnie, Connie my daughter and her husband, also a Harold, for their efforts in helping make this event possible. Until the next one. Last Last Chance Today is the last opportunity to vote in the weekly poll at papermoneyworld.net. This week?s question focuses on the on going discussion on collecting and investing. Go to http://www.papermoneyworld.net and place your vote. The participation on this question has surpassed last week so your vote today will extend that record. Furthermore, late today a new question will be posted by project manager Ed Beaman so you can vote twice today (a dream of politicians everywhere) if you did not vote earlier! If you have voted on this question, you can wait for the new question and vote on it. You can also write a letter to the editor about either question. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Harold Kroll sure did a terrific job in organizing South Fest I, and in keeping us informed in the Gram. I am little disappointed in this regard. His confession in the above report that he failed to have his challenge coin kept us from running that as the lead news story because we had all ready received a report of this dreadful failure. Challenge coins are issued at MPCFest for good deeds. After receiving a coin, the holder is required to keep it about his person at all times. All holders can challenge all other holders by simply holding up their challenge coin. This is a tradition that began in the active services and has been adopted by military money collectors. In an interesting twist of fate, Gram 918 seems to have been distributed best and soonest to AOL users! It seems that the work around that we have been using in an attempt to serve AOLGramsters worked when the main computer server at papermoneyworld might have had a problem. Hopefully, all has been corrected and you received 918 AND 919. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Hi! NO Grams here since #918! Wed! NO response from my e-mails! Hello, anyone out there? Guy! Dear Editor, Here is an old quote out of Alan D. Craig's "The Coins of Korea": My friend doesn't ponder what he paid for them, for he paid what he knew was right; when he thinks of his coins, he chuckles - and the better enjoys and deserves them. Now if that isn't the aim of us all, what is? Colin Bruce Dear Steemed Freditor, Face/back were or should I say ARE the terms used by our own Bureau of Engraving and Printing- which is EXACTLY the reason I started many years ago to use those same terms for the two sides of a note. I figured that if they are good enough for the BEP they are good enough for me. Though I do understand that "front" is perhaps more clearly identifiable as the face, still I have never had any trouble at all in the shortest of explanations telling someone what "face" refers to with note identification. Neil S. Dear Editor, I just visited the BEP site for the new $20.00 due to be released this fall. OUTSTANDING!! Very well done. I can't imagine anyone not being happy with these changes. It is about time that our currency have these updated security features. Look out Euro, the US dollar is back! As far as these designs looking like fest money, I don't know because I have never seen fest money. Have you festers considered posting the fest money on a website to be viewed by MPC collectors who are non-festers? Try Ron Wise's paper money gallery. It is linked to the IBNS site. The address is www.IBNS.it. There are many images of world currency and a section for MPC under the US section. It would be a nice support to the site. One final thought about the new money. Does anyone remember a mock-up similar to this note appearing in Coins or Coinage magazine some twenty years ago? I was in high school and remember seeing a mock-up of a $100.00 note with color. The image of Franklyn was done very similar to the new $20.00, except Franklyn was to the far right of the note. The color was done almost exactly like the new money. Interesting to think that twenty years ago someone had this in mind. Thanks, editor, for all that you do.
