From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 923 Date: Sunday, May 25, 2003 8:48 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 923 Friday May 23, 2003 Series 031 Research By David Seelye I have been studying the current military fest certificates (MFC, Series 031). I think that we have a lot to learn about this series. Does anyone have a Series 031 $10.00 with a serial number F00000101F or lower? Please do not forget to send your serial number data (position number and location, type of stars on your replacements (that you are holding for me)), error scans and other important information to Al Glaser. A fair sized contingent of dealers, collectors, those that acknowledge they are both, and those who claim they are one or the other depending on the circumstances, of MPC, AMC and related issues will certainly be at the Memphis Paper Money Show. This is an ideal time to make and renew acquaintances, but it is also an ideal time to further MFC research. I would be delighted to see your MFC there and, of course, you should have your pay book in case headquarters fulfills its duty and pays us! At least be sure to stop by at my table and say hello! One of the reasons to attend shows is to meet the voice at the other end of the telephone, letter, or email, and put a face to the name. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== The Monthly Planchet, the newsletter of the Indianapolis Coin Club, is an excellent coin club newsletter. Its main connection with the Gram is a common activist—Marcus Turner. Marcus called our attention to the May 2003 issue. He particularly liked the Planchet editorial quoting the Gram about circular comments Planchet-Gram-Planchet-Gram etc. (see page 5). I noted that the front page has a story about the new MPC collector Madison Turner, but I thought that the most interesting part was the photos from the club recognition of national coin week. Several of these feature MPC! Certainly a small step, but every promotion helps. Please have a look at the Planchet: http://www.indianapoliscoinclub.org/newsletters/may03.pdf =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, What did we do (to you)? No Gram since Tuesday!? Name withheld (by phone) Dear editor, I did not get a gram for 2 days. Can you resend any grams I missed (like these past 2 days?) See you soon- NS Dear Editor, You Said Temporary Tatoos Would Be Permitted. Maybe You Were Kiddin'..?? The Poll Is Fun...There A Few Suggestions Comming In. Your Direction Is Always Welcome & Needed. ed Dear Gram, I received this letter and thought that Gramsters would be interested. Thanks for the clarification, Mark. I collect Irish banknotes, and in Ireland I have heard the word "printage" to mean how many notes were printed. I suppose Fred would cringe at that. Gawain Mark Dear Gawain and Mark, I do not know that correct word, but I have an opinion which should surprise no one. I would say that the best term is production as in that note had a production of 10,000,000. However, I am far from certain. Possibly someone knows for sure. If not possibly we can figure it out on the next trip to the BEP. Editor Dear Steamed Freditor, Your French end label is a great find! I will look for a note in your number range- and you also bestirred me to get out my end label which is for German 1-mark notes. It is much the same as yours but the title is Allied Military Mark Currency/Germany, also for 8000 notes, serial number range 58464001 to 58472000. Now I will have to start a search for a note in this range too- never did it before. Help, everyone!! Mine was Pkg. No. 7309, packed in case no. 6893, assembled by group 1, packed by group 1, and dated 3-28-1944. This label and a number of note bands for AMC Lire (4) and Francs (5) all came from the Jim Wade Collection a long time ago (1968). Neil S. Dear Neil, All I can say is, WOW. Editor Hi Fred, I am in Korea, bought 100 MPC notes yesterday in a deal with some Japanese, nothing great just good stock material....already looked at all the SN's trying to find something but nothing. You know maybe I should sit down and read your book sometime.............I noticed something this morning that I am sure you know, and if you DON'T then you owe me a big write-up, "CUMMINGS DISCOVERS......" Any the Series number is always is a color that matches the color of the note...........the 591 series is the most obvious as it is often not real plain as it blends in to well..... Will you be in Baltimore? Best regards, Mike First let me say, it is best that you do not read the book. By not reading it, you might let more goodies get by and have more sales as you get cherry picked. That will make more collectors happy and I know that you are interested in customer service! I am not certain that I know what you are talking about regarding series color. I think you are talking about the text that says SERIES XXX. Yes, for more series that text is in the basic color of the note because it is printed as part of the tint. There are two exceptions to this. Can someone help us with the exceptions? What are they and why? If no one volunteers, I will explain later in the week. Editor PS Well, since the Browns moved to that eastern city, I have more or less pretended that it did not exist. Now I am forced to come to grips with the situation. Yes, I will probably be in Baltimore. =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== May 30 ?
