This is from Petrov's introduction: "During the prolonged siege of Tyre in the year 1123, the Doge Domenigo Michieli exhausted his treasury chest. Because his brave Venetians clamored for pay and some reportedly contemplated desertion, the resourceful Doge had leather coins struck and issued them to pay his troops. The issue of this "money of necessity" was accompanied by a solemn promise that it would be redeemed at full face value upon the return of the fleet to Venice. Historians did not record the reaction of the crusaders to this early substitute for good gold, or indeed whether Domenigo Michieli, noted for his shrewdness as well as his ferocity, actually honored his pledge. But in all probability these leather coins were the first issue of what has eventually come to be called military currency. Although the evidence is meager, it seems that throughout the Middle Ages and on into the modern period, such currencies were used from time to time, serving a single limited purpose, that of paying troops when supplies of regular money were inadequate or non-existent; they bore no relation to the currencies of the occupied enemy territories. In the nineteenth century military currencies assumed a new and important role: they were used not only to pay troops but also as a means of paying the people of an occupied territory for supplies requisitioned by the occupying army. During World War II military currencies were used by all the major powers and to a much greater extent than ever before. In addition to paying the troops and compensating the owners of requisitioned property, military currencies also served as a major means of manipulating the economies of occupied territories." I wondered if any of these leather "coins" still exist? I never heard of them before this." =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== It is a pleasure to run David Klingers article above. We (I) are sorry that it is a little confusing about who wrote what between Petrov, Klinger, Daniel, and the Asylum. Thanks to all! I believe that David also submitted this item to the Gram. Possibly it was before or simultaneously with sending it to the Aslyum. I just could not run this item without commenting on Petrov and his book and it seemed that I could never get that done. It is a great book. It is a fundamental reference for our study, and, as always, I have stories about it! I first learned of Petrov in the 1970s. It may have been from Mike Cummings that I learned of it. Where do I start with the stories? The somewhat ugly cover of the book is nevertheless fascinating. It is a simple collection of AMC and MPC in a fanned circle. From the twelve oclock position: 10 am mark replacement, 100 am lire, 10 am francs, 50 am lire, $1 Series 461 MPC (last four being unremarkable), MPC Series 472 $5 replacement, MPC Series 471 $10 expedient specimen (stamped specimen on replacement), 1000 am mark replacement, 100 am mark expedient specimen (stamped specimen on replacement), 5000 fr specimen (no SN)! In addition a Series 1943 1 lire note is off by itself on the back cover. What a remarkable group. The 1000 mark, 471 and 472 notes would each be unique or one of two notes known in private hands. Private hands, that is one of the critical questions. Where were (and are) the notes? I had the same questions in the 1970s. According to the biographical information in the book, Petrov was a faculty member at Johns Hopkins University. I called the university and within moments was connected with the gentleman. He was not overly surprised, amused, or otherwise struck by the nature of my call, but he could not remember the source of the notes (or photographs thereof) on the cover of his book. He thought that they MIGHT have been from a government archive, but was completely unsure. I was disappointed then, and am disappointed now. Now the vast assets of the Internet, I cannot find anything on Vladimir Petrov. I hope that some wizard out there will take the challenge and find some information on Petrov. The two MPC replacements and 1000 mark replacement are of particular interest with regard to disposition because they are both subject to special studies. Initially, I kept the two MPC replacements in the survey. Heck, the entire survey was only a few hundred pieces at the time. Many replacements that are now relatively common were completely unreported, yet these two were reported. After the MPC survey matured, I wondered about these notes. Finally, I decided to take them out of the survey based on the following theory. First, Petrov himself did not recall where he got the illustrations, much less where the notes were. Therefore, it was possible that they do not even exist anymore! Finally, and most importantly, if they are not included in the survey, it is altogether likely that if they still exist that they will be reported in the future. However, if they have been destroyed in the intervening fifty years, it is unlikely that this fact would every be confirmed and the listings would continue in the survey uncorrected forever. By the 1980s, I was in the numismatic book business. I routinely purchased a few copies of Money and Conquest and resold them. I bought them for something like $12 and resold them for $15. Some time in the late 1980s I received a flyer from the publisher selling single copies of the books to anyone for something like $6 each. I called the publisher in the hope of buying the entire supply for about $4 or less. I could not get them to budge from the $6 price so I did not buy any! What a mistake, the book has been hard to find for more than 15 years. About two years ago, I pulled out my copy to find some information. I thought that I was crazy. I could not figure it out. Ultimately, I found that a full section (known as a signature) of 32 pages had been left out and another signature duplicated! Not only had I missed out on getting the mother load of a classic book, but my own reference copy was about worthless. I started watching for a copy of Petrov. I finally purchased one in a numismatic book auction. It was reasonable. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived to find the book plate of William Benson in the book. Bill was a past president of the International Bank Note Society and a keen world paper money collector. In fact, I think that I sold this copy to Bill in the 1980s. I wish that I could tell you that I have a bunch of these books for sale, but I do not. I do, however, recommend it to everyone. If you cannot find a copy to buy, borrow one from your local library (interlibrary loan will probably be necessary). =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Esteeemed Editor, I just bought a bronze token that might be a new military token for the Philippines. It is about 21mm in diameter, which is about nickel-sized but it is about half as thick. Both sides have a large ?20? in an old font in the center. On one side is ?A? at 12, ?S? at 9, ?C? at 3, and ?P.I.? at 6. On the other side is ?No Cash Value? across the top and a small diamond at 6. I am thinking the ?ASC? could be American Service Center or Army Service Center. Does any Gramster have any knowledge of this piece or other guesstimates about it? Howard A.
