From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 925 Date: Tuesday, May 27, 2003 7:03 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 925 Tuesday May 27, 2003 What Do You Think of Counterfeit MPC? Collecting counterfeit notes is the central idea of this weeks poll on papermoneyworld.net. Specifically, the poll asks if voters think that counterfeits are worth more or less than the corresponding regular issue. The poll at papermoneyworld asks a question of collectors every week. The questions cover a broad range of collecting interests. In addition to voting by going to papermoneyworld.net, collectors are asked to submit question ideas. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== A friend of mine is a master of chess. He once told me that he ascribes his success to the ability to only make a mistake once. When he told me that I resolved to cut my repetitions (in chess mistakes) to ten. I wish that I could do that well in newsletter editing. You might have received a virtual mail box of Grams yesterday. That was because of my oft repeated mistake of misnumbering the Gram in the Subject line of the mail going out. That is the oft repeated error for the day. I compounded that with a new one (error). At least as far as I know, yesterday is the first time that I ran an advertisement without information on the seller AND with other advertisements so it looked as though the material was for sale by someone else. I apologize to David Seelye, Ed Hoffman, and any readers who may have been confused. The corrected advertisements are below. Remember marginalia? Last weekend I heard the word used on public television. I could hardly believe it so I consulted my dictionary and found that it is a real word. I thought that it was something that had been made up by the numisbibliomaniacs (a made up word). These errors were made without any consideration being given to the poor performance of late with Gram creation. Finally, I even have a small matter of substance. In the long discussion on Petrov yesterday, I forgot to mention one thing. In the explanation of the decision to remove some of the notes from research data bases, I should have pointed out that the entire group looked like something that came from a government source. The fact that several of the items were specimens and one of them in a form not previously seen (rubber stamp on MPC Series 471 $10) makes it appear, to me at least, that these notes or possibly simply photographs thereof were provided by a government source that may or may not still exist. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor & Pu Ba, I want to try to kill several birds with one letter and make some comments on a number of things that have recently been in the Gram (put my two cents in so to speak). On what to call the sides of a note, my opinion would be face (or front) and back. That seems easier to understand and comes close to "top & bottom" which we all understand. Many of us have sold something we like, to buy something we like more. In my case I sold a penny (cent) collection to get a wife and furnish our first home. That was many years ago. Seeing what that collection is worth today sometimes makes me wonder if I did the right thing. The only part of that "investment" I have left is the wife part. Given the above example, was I an investor or a collector? I am hard pressed to find someone who "buys" something hoping it will go down in value. I believe that the definition of "collector" must contain part of the definition of "investor" as well. As collectors we all would like to see our buys go up in value for a number of reasons, not all of which are $$$$$$. A rise in dollar value 1) makes us feel good about our judgments, 2) gives us bragging rights, 3) increases our net worth 4) you can show this increase to your wife when she asks why you spent the rent money on "those worthless bits of old paper?" Therefore, with that in mind, we are all collector/INVESTORS. NONE of us buy what we buy, be it match book covers, different kinds of TP (my wife has a collection of TP she got on her European trip years ago), coins or paper money, with the idea that it will go down in value when it comes to selling it. (I'm not sure what a collection of European TP from the mid-60's would be valued at today but it did not cost her anything to start with so at least there is no loss.) Sure it is a gamble, but so is the stock market. We paper money buyers have the added value of being able to enjoy the beauty of our buy and the THRILL of the hunt, find and nailing down that elusive piece we need to complete, or that is rare. So with those thought in mind we need to come up with a new name for what we do. Hobbiest, investor, collector just does not cover it. Any ideas out there? Now for the 691-701 issue--maybe we can satisfy both needs. Do the research and then burn it. Maybe I don't understand the 'research' part fully but it seems to me that should satisfy both camps and make the rumps of the rail sitters more comfortable. Well, those are the thoughs of one Gramster. Any comments? Best wishes, see you in Memphis, and may your God go with you, Paymaster =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== May 30 ?
