From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 926 Date: Wednesday, May 28, 2003 12:35 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 926 Wednesday May 28, 2003 More on Counterfeits By Joe Boling As Christopher Robin would say, "Now how to amuse them today?" Every time I need to write a column, I rummage through the stacks of unaccessioned junk around my desk looking for something new that might be of interest to gram readers. Generally not much is there, my interests having turned to fake notes. So what should tickle my eye today but a gram announcement that this week's poll on papermoneyworld.net concerns fake notes? So, I went there, became the seventh person to vote this week, and noted that, as with most polls, the responses elicited are not adequate to reply to the question. This week's question asks if voters think that a counterfeit is worth more than the corresponding regular issue--yes or no. I'm going to skew the poll here by discussing this question. It depends, of course. For a common note easily obtainable for 50 cents, a counterfeit is considerably more rare, more desirable, and worth more than fifty cents. [All discussions assume that we are dealing with contemporary counterfeits intended for circulation, not modern replicas.] For a note that exists in only a few collections, the fake is worth less; in fact, the fakes might be more common than the genuine pieces. At the moment I'm not aware of such an inversion of availability for any MPC issue, but the Turkish 10 livres note (putative British WWI counterfeit) that I discussed last December is an example of a fake being more common than originals. In general, fakes of scarce, high-priced notes do not have the cachet of fakes of common pieces. So I would have modified the poll to give one or more additional responses, such as: At what price level do you think that a fake and a genuine piece are approximately equivalent? Have you ever paid more for a counterfeit than an equivalent genuine piece was worth? Another issue is the quality of the fake. A piece that looks like a second-grade art project, that never could have passed, ought to bring less than a technical tour de force that is the subject of messages to the field. Aha--and what if you have one of those messages, and want a fake note to go with it? You'll pay more than you might have otherwise, because you have a specific collecting goal in mind for that combination of letter and banknote. And then there are the dealers who know what I like and see me coming (ugh). Fred and I have had words about some of the money I have spent for fakes. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Wow, mark it down. Joe and I agree on everything he said about counterfeits! That does not happen too often. Just to be clear, in my opinion, the discussion proves that the weekly poll is working! It started a nice discussion. We hope to hear from you on it too. We have been on the terminology band wagon for the past few weeks, so we might as well continue it for awhile on this counterfeit discussion. Joe (quite correctly in my view) talks about contemporary counterfeits meaning those created at the time that the genuine notes circulated and intended for use in commerce. I am less comfortable with his use of the term modern replica. I consulted World War II Remembered. We distinguished contemporary from modern fakes meant to bilk numismatists by calling them collectors counterfeits. The slight distinction that I am trying to make is between a collectors counterfeit which in many ways would have to be BETTER than a contemporary counterfeit to pass. I have seen what I believe to be contemporary counterfeits that not only could, but did, pass as genuine to collectors so that is another terminology problem. I consider a replica to be something that might technically be a counterfeit, but is intended for souvenir use. It would not pass in commerce (if it had been created at that time) and would not pass a collectors scrutiny. However, it might pass as genuine to a non numismatist tourist. There is a wonderful category of counterfeit that is well known to Confederate collectors. The term (actually the fine point of the definition) was taught to me by Grover Criswell. A bogus note is a fake intended to circulate for which there is no corresponding regular/genuine issue. An example would be a MPC Series 641 $20! I cannot think of any such notes in our speciality. Wait a sec. There are some bogus issues among the Japanese puppet issues for China (I think. Joe? There you go Joe, next weeks column subject.) I have put on my target sweat shirt so please fire away. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, You may THINK you fixed the POW coin ad, but it still says Hoffman in today's gram, and nothing about Seelye. Joe Dear Joe, OK, we will try again. Editor Dear Editor, I remember at fest trading a $10 note with the serial number F000000110* note for other notes that I needed at the time I was also lucky enough to own the other only reported note in that series being serial number F00000098F that am told is a first printing note that was supposedly destroyed?? There are some differences most noticeably in the length of the bar code and it appears to have a security planchette on the FACE of the note that is ultraviolet sensitive This note will be available for inspection and possibly for trade at David Seelye's table at the Memphis Show. Now all I have to remember is to whom I traded the other example to?? WAS IT YOU?? [it was not to the editor, I do not collect MFC since I consider it a conflict of interest—ed] I have been collecting counterfeit coins for a long time and have several examples but while buying out a large collection recently I noticed a 591 $10 counterfeit note that had been over stamped and its a good thing that it was stamped because this note was a remarkable example to detect! It was that good of a note that it surly passed as money in its day this note also will be on display and for sale at David Seeley's table at Memphis so stop by to visit him and to look at some very neat items that you wont just find anywhere! And when you get there you will know what I mean and I will leave it at that (one of a kind Items) to let some of the other surprises that will be on display to your imagination dont miss it! See you there Kevin Dear Kevin, Surly all of the high value MPC were counterfeited to one extent or another, but I have not previously seen a contemporary 591 $10 counterfeit. I look forward to seeing it. Editor =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== May 30 ?
