From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 928 Date: Monday, June 02, 2003 5:52 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 928 Monday June 2, 2003 Atomic Numismatics By Warner Talso Here is an interesting connection between numismatics and the atomic bomb. The Manhattan Project (code name for the atomic weapon development project) was famous for it's insatiable appetite for materials and the lengths to which the project went to get the job done. There was a need for a conductor for the coils of magnets. In the summer of 1942 the preliminary plans for the electromagnetic plant had called for five thousand tons of copper. However, copper was in short supply due to other war related needs and strikes in the industry. Silver was suggested as a substitute, because it has the highest electric conductivity of any other natural substance. "On August 3, 1942, Colonel Nichols visited Undersecretary of the Treasury Daniel W. Bell with a request for a large amount of silver. When Bell asked how much he needed, Nichols replied 'six thousand tons', to which the secretary replied rather indignantly, 'Young man, you may think of silver in tons, but the Treasury will always think of silver in troy ounces.'" Eventually, 14,700 tons of silver (much in the form of silver dollars), worth 400 million dollars at the time, was loaned to the Project. A total of 940 magnets were fabricated using this silver. The magnets were estimated to be one hundred times larger than any magnets previously constructed. They were so powerful that they pulled on the nails of workers shoes, making walking difficult. They caused tools to fly out the hands of workers. Special nonferrous tools and equipment had to be fabricated. "When it came time to return the silver to the Treasury after the war, every ounce was scavenged. In the final accounting, of the 14,700 tons borrowed, only a minuscule fraction of 1 percent was missing." The majority of this information and the quotes are taken from the book "Racing for the Bomb" by Robert S. Norris, Steerforth Press, South Royalton, Vermont, 2002 =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== In addition to playing with the Fest V dates, I have been experimenting with some other calendar matters. Specifically, I have been entering MPC items in a Yahoo calendar at http://calendar.yahoo.com/mpcgram. This calendar has many advantages to the calendar as published currently in the Gram. Please to this calendar, look around, and give us some feedback on how you like it. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Esteemed (somewhat confused) Editor, In light of the recent mention in the Gram about changing the dates for Fest V, perhaps all those in attendance in Memphis could get together at Fred's table (or David's or Leo's) and have a little discussion. As a planned attendee, I need to know if should pack the spring or winter uniform!! Roger Dear Editor, Well, stop inclining and make a decision [about Fest V dates]; my calendar is already filling up for next winter/spring. Joe Dear Editor, I just received a phone call from John Wilson . He says do not move it to the weekend after Maastricht . That will conflict with C SNSin Miluwakee . Just passing this info along. Marcus Turner Hi Fred, A little frigid Ohio weather is good for one's lungs, nice crispy cool air. It isn't as if you are holding the Fest in Adak, Alaska or Buffalo, New York. So what if Amtrak is late, it usually is deapite the weather. Cheers, Colin Dear Editor, On the subject of series numbers being the same as the predominant note color, you state that there are two exceptions. I count four exceptions, ie. 461, 471, 472 and 481. As to why, I would guess that they were printed along with the serial numbers or as a seperate overprint and as you said, all the others were printed as part of the tint. It's just a guess mind you, don't ask me to prove it or anything. Maybe they were uncertain as to what or how to date these notes. And why are Allied military yen called series 100? I look forward to your reply. Jack H. Hickman, NE Dear Jack, You are correct, but you caught me off guard. For Series 461 and 471, the series number was printed by letter press along with the serial and position numbers. For Series 472 and later, the series designation was printed with the respective tint. The surprise was when you suggested that series 472 and 481 were printed in the same way as 461/471. I had to dig out some notes to be certain, but 472 and 481 series numbers were printed with the tints. Darned if I know where the Series 100 designation came from. I suspect that it was a convenient place to start and authorities anticipated creating more series: 101, 102 etc. I will be pleased to read any other theories. Editor Dear Editor, For military fakes more common than originals Joe might like to check the Operation Bernhard notes and the 5 sen Japanese Military Yen note (S&B 2013q), although I am not sure whether the latter was contemporary. Gramme A. Dear Editor, When I said "modern replica" I was thinking Chambliss notes, not fakes meant to bilk collectors. Those are of interest only to those who are assembling reference sets for authentication purposes (such as me). Bogus notes in the puppet bank series? I can't think of any offhand, but I'll chew on it. I can think of one in the JIM series.
