From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 929 Date: Tuesday, June 03, 2003 6:14 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 929 Tuesday June 3, 2003 BOUGUS!! By Joe Boling In the past week the subject of bogus notes was broached (notes that seem legitimate, but that in fact are complete fantasies, not even being counterfeits of notes that actually existed). The most interesting Asian one from the WWII period is the 1/4 shilling note of Oceania (SB page 621, no catalog number assigned). Nobody seems to know where these originated, who prepared them, or why. They look like regular JIM notes in design, but the colors and print technology are completely foreign to the JIM series, so it seems unlikely that they were ever intended to fool anyone. Another bogus Oceania group are the replicas. These get the label bogus because they did not exactly duplicate the originals, but used components of the originals. The unmarked one shilling replicas lack the face underprint; the one pound replicas (all productions) have the wrong left front face guilloche. Other bogus JIM notes are the many "banana-banana" notes created long after the war from models of Malayan $1 and $10 notes. These are serially numbered and were wholesaled all over SE Asia by the source in Kuala Lumpur. One report had a series of them being used as lottery tickets in Singapore. Most likely they were used as funeral money or as tourist souvenirs. They are written up on page 613 of SB (I'm sure I now have some additional varieties buried in my unaccessioned materials). Outside the JIM series, I can think of no "whole cloth" bogus creations. But there are several overprints that do not seem to match anything that was legitimately prepared. At the top of this list are the South China Expeditionary Army overprints on Nationalist notes (SB page 596). In addition, there are all the geographic overprints on Central Reserve Bank of China notes that were prepared from the same typographic elements, and are therefore, in my opinion, collectors' fantasies (see page 717 of SB). Following up on my column of last week, Gramme A proposes Bernhard notes and the 5 sen 11- character bird and dragon military yen note (SB2013q) as examples of issues for which the fakes are more common than the originals. Yes, in today's market, the 5 sen fakes are seen more frequently. They first appeared in the early 1980s and are reputed to have been printed in Hong Kong for the collector market. As for Bernhard notes, while there are plenty around, I would not say that they are more common than originals. In the UK, most dealers have an ample stock of 1930s-40s white notes of all denominations and signatures. Of course, they do not show their Bernhard notes openly, but I don't believe there are nearly as any of them around as of the genuine pieces. In the US, it may well be that there are more fakes, both because it is less hazardous to handle them, and because the originals are not highly sought and therefore are not stocked in depth by US dealers. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I knew that it was too good to be true—agreeing the way that I did with Joe last week. First, the 1/4 schilling Oceania bogus note is the perfect example of this concept. I sure wish that I had thought of it last week. The other Oceania replicas are not bogus notes in my opinion. I do not think that a note that might be considered a very crude counterfeit or one that could never circulate can be considered a bogus note based upon these characteristics alone. They might be replicas or fantasies as opposed to counterfeits (often a fine line), but I do categorize them as bogus. A different denomination or a different vignette would qualify as bogus in my book. Finally, I mentioned in the first discussion on this matter that Grover Criswell, the Confederate money maven, had taught me this distinction on bogus notes when we were working on hone of his books. In the Confederate area (and era), the matter of fantasy designs intended to circulate were a significant issue, so collectors of this area deal with the issue (of terminology for such notes). As you know, I put great stock in small sources like dictionaries. As it turns out, I could not find any dictionary support for the distinctions concerning bogus that Grover taught me. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, What I want to know is if Nate's is open year around...................... Mikie Dear Mike, Nate has agreed to stay open this winter—just for you—and your stool is reserved too! Editor Dear Editor, Well FRED, there are those who think the 691/701 destruction should not have been stopped. Others think it is okay. I will not comment on the yea's or nay's, but would like to have the rest of the world to know, they also have a chance to own these remaining notes. The notes are to be released under Title 10 which is an exchange of goods or services. The full control of the notes are in the process of changing from Anniston, Alabama to Bill Carnes at Fort Jackson. If anyone would like to make a proposal for the remaining notes, they need to got through the Committee for the "Center for Military History". Send it to: United States Army, Center of Military History, Attn: DAMH-HD - Terry VanMeter, 103 3rd Ave., Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. 20139-5058. Marv Mericle Dear Editor, You have a remarkable sense of humor - I have been wanting to meet you for some time now. My grandfather - EL Brownson left a wonderful collection and in the collection is a letter from you to him & the book World War II Military Currency - that's a great book. Anyway I just wanted to say hi and that I admire you much as he did. He was a great man & I miss him dearly & I feel honored that he left this legacy to me and that I now have the opportunity to exchange email with someone he looked up to and that person is you - also if you wouldn't mind corresponding with me maybe you could ! give me some pointers on how to get into this business / who to deal with selling/buying & when to buy/sell. I would like to do business & correspond with you in the future - there is so much I could learn from you. Anyway thanks for reading this email and I hope to hear from you. Sincerely, DL Parish Dear DL, Gosh. Is remarkable good? As I wrote to you, I remember your grandfather quite well although I only met him a few times. He gave me some research information that was useful for me. Some of it is still in process. As to resources, the Gram should be your first place to look. You subscription has been started. If you did not receive this issue, please write (remember, you liked my humor (attempts)). If I might say so, I also recommend Comprehensive Catalog of Military Payment Certificates (4th edition) and World War II Remembered. Aside to other Gramsters. Here is the item the spurred DL to write and which he thought was good humor. Watch for more news on this item tomorrow. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3027539388&category=3418&rd=1 editor =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== http://calendar.yahoo.com/mpcgram Memphis International Paper Money Show: 13-15 June, Cook Convention Center, 255 N.
