From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 932 Date: Saturday, June 07, 2003 7:05 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 932 Saturday June 7, 2003 2004 Scholarship Fund Dive Kicks Off by Marcus Turner The 2003 ANA Summer Seminar is not even in the history books yet, however, we have received our first donation for the 2004 Military Numismatists Scholarship Fund. Our first donor for the 2004 fund was Al Glaser of Ramona, CA. Past years have seen early donations by the likes of Steve Feller, RA Medina, Marv Mericle and Ed Hoffman. This year Al got the jump on all of them, sending in his donation before the Memphis IPMS next week. Thank you Al! The Rest of the Story By Warner Talso About six weeks ago I wrote a story about finding three beautiful uncirculated Frankfurt barter units (10, 50, and 100 units - SB #613, 615, and 616). Ron, a local dealer, had asked me to identify them for him. Coincidentally, barter units had been at the top of my want list ever since Larry showed me his collection at FEST IV. I have the idea of putting together an exhibit that shows the history of Germany throughout WWII in terms of currency. Anyway, I immediately made Ron an offer, but he had promised first refusal to another gentleman. He would call me when he had a decision. I waited impatiently for several weeks and finally called him. He had just talked to the other gentleman and the other gentleman did not want to meet my offer. So these beauties were mine (or just about)!! Well, it was Friday afternoon. As luck would have it, my car was in the shop for some body work. Wouldn't be ready until 5:00 PM. Ron closed at 5:00 PM. What to do? I could quickly run to Ron's with a government car. No, that wasn't right. I could ask a co-worker to drive me or lend me his car. For some pieces of old paper? No, this was not exactly an emergency-as others would understand it. Call my wife and have her come pick me up? Get real. I hope you can sense my emotional turmoil. I REALLY wanted these notes. In the end, I had to wait until Monday morning. I got to Ron's shop first thing. But not before some young man wanting to show Ron some shiny round metal things. So I had to wait. What a waste. No appreciation of priorities here. Finally, it was my turn. I held my breath while we agreed that my original offer was good. (I had feared that he might decide that further bargaining would be profitable to him.) These beautiful notes had a new home! I was on a high. I am new to the hobby and this was the first time I had this experience of finding some gem that I really wanted unexpectedly and successfully negotiating acquisition. I called Fred with the good news. I had been discussing the situation with him. I also told him of my idea for an exhibit. I now had all the pieces in place and could move ahead. Fred, always the good friend, brought me down to earth by pointing out I needed taxi tickets, Joint Export-Import Agency travelers coupons, travelers checks, etc. to be complete. He certainly didn't want me to enjoy this moment any longer than necessary. I guess that might be unprofessional. Nevertheless, I continue to be pleased with my success and will gladly show these notes at the summer seminar. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Last week we had the Fest. Next week is Memphis. Man the time flies. You know that. Memphis—the very word makes me think paper money, adventures, fun. It (Memphis) will dominate paper money news and the Gram for the next two weeks (or more). That is because it is important and it will no doubt generate plenty of news. What adventures and discoveries await Memphis visitors? How many busted budgets will be left strewn about the bourse floor? This little introduction to Memphis week is meant to make you make last minute plans to go. We want to see you there. We do not particularly want to share the booty, but it will be worth it to share the fun. See you in Memphis (I hope). =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, I enjoy each issue of the gram, irrespective of whether the topic of the article is in my collecting area or not. Thanks for your continued hard work. I just have one comment, Fred, about June 6th. You might also mention that the Battle of Midway was found during these early days of June in 1942 (June 3-6 or 4-7, I suppose depending on which side of the dateline you live). Best regards, Ken Dear Ken, Great point! I will remember the Pacific connection for next year. Better yet, next year you can have the lead article on something numismatic relating to the Battle of Midway. Even better, prepare such an article now AND next year! We must strike while the iron…, well you know. Editor Dear Steamed Freditor, Pursuant to my report on the AMC note bands and the single end label, I have to add details now on a group of MPC note bands that also came in the Wade Collection with the others. There are six of them, 4 small and two larger. Each has wording MILITARY PAYMENT CERTIFICATES 3 times, number 100 in the middle, and text telling about substituted certificates having a prefix but no suffix letter. Colors, small bands: green, brown, black (2); larger bands: blue and light gold. To my surprise, there is also an end label for MPC that I had not remembered at all! Details- Text lines as follows: MILITARY PAYMENT CERTIFICATES / Series 681 / 4,000 5c $200 / C08512001C to C08516000C / Then 3 lines at bottom: Packed in Case No. (blank) Carton No. 2129 / Examined by (name) on 4-7-1969 / Verified by (initials) on 4-7-1969. That's it. Neil S. Hi from a first-time correspondent. Are there many MPC wrappers around on the circuit? I have one, rubber-stamped June 29, 1959. Printed on it is the following: MILITARY PAYMENT CERTIFICATES Then (smaller writing): IF THE NUMBERS ON THE CERTIFICATES IN THIS PACK- AGE DO NOT RUN IN SE- QUENCE THE SUBSTITUTED CERTIFICATES ARE PRE- CEDED BY A LETTER BUT DO NOT HAVE A SUFFIX LETTER. Below that, with lines above and below is the large number 100, which is crossed out, followed by a smaller number in ink indicating obviously that some notes had been removed. By the time I got it from the principal of the closed Narimasu High School (military) in Tokyo, 14 years ago, most had been removed from either end of the pack, but the remaining ones were pristine and well centered. One whose name I often see in the MPCGram is my witness to that last word (pristine and well centered). Just sign me "annfarra" Dear Annfarra, What is this wrapper day? Week? Editor Dear Editor, This is the first [Gram] I have had for a while. How do I complain to AOL? Also, Heritage will be auctioning a large lot of MPC Only a couple of replacements in the batch but lots of others. The guy (coin dealer friend) sent to Heritage rather then Lyn as he sends over $1,000,000 a year to them So be on the lookout. Nick Dear Gram, I need some help from the real paper money collectors out there. I just got a Russian 5 ruble note that had been used by an organization seeking to return POWs from SE Asia to the US. It is right up my alley as a use of currency as a propaganda medium. However, Pick doesn't show a 5 ruble note of 1961, although the banknote is clearly marked with that year. Is my old copy of Pick wrong? Anybody care to send along a Pick number for such a note? Herb F. Marcus Turner Marcus, thank you for copying me on your e-mail. It is the right of all members to vote in an election for the candidates they think will do the best job for you representing the Association that is so important to our hobby. Bring your ballot to IPMS and by that time you can analyze the candidates, the platforms they propose and who you think will do the best job for the ANA's approximate 29,400 members, which include 500 coin clubs. See you at Memphis, John and Nancy Wilson Dear Editor, Just to let you know I received my mini Fest MFC yesterday. Very nice. Harold certainly went to some effort to do something unique. Thanks again for letting me participate - long range. Warner Dear Esteeemed Editor, I really appreciate the offer of being the "official" co-calendar man with the distinguished president of the ANA, John Wilson, but the pay is too high and it will shove me into another tax bracket! Only kidding! I really cannot take on any more duties at this time but will continue to mail in information as I find it, or it finds me. I am also preparing to attend the Memphis show again. This time I convinced Daryl Spelbring to attend it and drive Len Harsel with him. Daryl is a squid (Navy) so he already dislikes my Army background, but he is really going to hate me after bunking with Len and me! I could not drive Len this year because I am driving North, West, South and then East to Kansas City, Iola, Fargo, Salt Lake City, Denver, Colorado Springs, Goodyear, El Paso, San Antonio, Dallas, Janesville, Houston and then back to Virginia. If there is anyone out there located between any of those cities and wants me to spoil their day, please contact me at Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com and I will see if you can be squeezed in. The day after I leave for Memphis, my executive wife leaves for another of her overseas consulting trips. She is headed for Mumbai (Bombay), India, to consult for about two weeks with their computer staff about upgrading their software to catch the bad guys. I actually correspond with a dealer there and will try to have her to visit his store and bring back some things for me. We shall see how successful I am at convincing her. That is all for now. Howard A. Daniel III Dear Howard, It sure is good that you have all of the high powered computer power because you must have used it to calculate the shortest route among all of those cities. Possibly you used the same program to compute the greatest distance that can be traveled. We would be pleased to have you add Fest HQ to your itinerary, but I cannot even estimate what decade you might pass this way. In any event, we will want reports from you on your adventures.
