From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 933 Date: Sunday, June 08, 2003 8:53 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 933 Sunday June 8, 2003 More Atomic Numismatics By Bruce Smith Regarding the article "Atomic Numismatics" in the latest Gram, I think not everyone knows (I didn't till a couple years ago), that the reason nickels were made out of silver during World War II, was because the metallic nickel was needed for the Manhattan Project. In the process for making uranium into weapon material, it goes through a gaseous stage during which it is highly corrosive. One of the most resistant materials to uranium corrosion is nickel. All the equipment used in this phase of production had to be nickel plated, and eventually the plating wore off and everything had to be replated. Large amounts of nickel were needed for this purpose. Eventually some bright scientist came up with a better and less expensive material -- teflon. Yes, teflon was originally a top secret material developed for nuclear arms production. Eggs won't stick to your Teflon coated frying pan, and neither will weapons grade uranium. OVERPRINTING SN/ SERIES distinction: By Guy Araby I decided to run a heavy blacklight over all the series and "most of the multiple printings! IT is very obvious as to which was printed together! My findings! Testing all new notes , several hundred. ARE as follows! Series #461 "Position number" and "serial number" and "series number" are all printed together! ALL this "overprinting" is "BRIGHT RED " under black light- full size lamps! AND the same with series #471!!!! Series #472 "ONLY "position number" and "serial number" are "RED.” Next SERIES #481, only serial number and position # are in red, NOT series! THIS series has a the "unique" 2nd printing that does "NOT" turn red under black light! Then 3rd and 4th printing go back to "RED" SN and POS #'s! ALL the rest of the seires including 1st and second printing of 691/701 et al! are printed serial number and position # at the same time! THIS is correct information!! I will be happy to prove it using varying tests! Hope this helps! AS I have been studying the entire series under BLACKLIGHT for 5 years now. You can confirm this using blacklights and also a few other methods. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Recently (today), I received a letter complaining that I had not run someone’s letter to the editor. Basically, we run all material that is submitted to the Gram, but there are a few things that we do not consider appropriate. First, items must have a numismatic tie. They should relate to military numismatics, but they must be numismatic. A few Gramsters send items that might be viewed by others as being political. If there is no numismatic hook we do not run them. We do, however, get into numismatic politics. We do not like to labor these points, but feel an obligation to cover it from our special point of view. We love criticism. We like complaints about the Gram and about the editor. We are pleased to run these. Complaints directed at other people we are less likely to run. In one case we asked a writer to change the letter from specifically complaining about a person to generally explaining that type situation. The writer got mad. Complaints that are mean spirited instead of constructive might not get run, but I remember only one instance of omitting such letter. Ironically, one of only two letters that I can remember deliberately omitting was meant to be pleasant, but actually was ugly implying some ideas that I do not think that the writer intended. Other things get in the way. As you know, I am prone to losing things. Yes, as most of you know, that happens with email as well as snail mail. I try to meter mail as well as articles. We like for every Gram to have interesting material on different subjects. Of course we cannot always met this goal, but it does cause us to advance or hold an item. We read every letter that is published. Mostly they are just run, but often minor corrections are made. A writer who calls the face of a note the obverse will find it changed (the obvious exception is if the terminology is the topic of discussion). Sometimes we want to check something before we run the letter. If something is false, or possibly false, we probably will run a letter, but feel that we must be prepared to offer the other point of view in an editor’s response or in some other manner. In the last few days, we combined two letters from a Gramster because both were short. We do not like to run two letters from the same Gramster in the same issue or even a letter and article from the same Gramster in the same issue. We sometimes make a letter into an article. Possbily, we have even done the opposite. We do all of these things because we feel that it is our responsibility. It has been suggested that the Gram could be turned into a listserve operation where all letters submitted are forwarded to all subscribers. It is possible that such a list could be created to supplement the Gram or even to replace the Gram if no editor can be found when I retire, but listserve is NOT a newsletter. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, I started receiving the MPCgram yesterday, and I'm looking forward to it! I would prefer the term "annotated" to "marginalized." Isn't note-taking what interleaved copies are all about? How come no one ever publishes interleaved editions anymore? Maybe it's just too expensive, but leaving enough blank space in the regular edition seems like a good compromise. -Wayne Hi Freditor, With regard to Herb F's request for a Pick number for Russia 5-ruble note of 1961, it's #224, on p. 662 of the new Vol. 3. Neil S. Which Gramsters are going to be in Colorado Springs around July 4th? Maybe still a Mini Fest? Larry Gibbs Dear Larry, I am sure that there is the possibility of a miniFest! Editor Hi! 10+ hours of pure hell! Virus scans, none detected, tech help, you name it 2 days of pure hell! froze up! JUST THINK I couldn't "SCREAM" any more... the horror, then all the sudden back online????? for how long , I don't know??! Guy! Your my family! ((no need run this)), please.. BUT you could run my other 2 letters!! :)! Guy! Howdy, Fred! I have just found out that the 'Franklin D. Mitchell,'who signed the short snorter I made for the WW II symposium at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1985, was a co-author with Stephen J. Schecter of "The Homefront: America During WWII" published by Putnam in 1984. I probably knew that in 1985; however, I HAVE slept since then...
